BOMBSHELL: Recording Of Piers Morgan Admitting Knowledge Of Phone Hacking

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

BOMBSHELL! A British blogger claims limey CNN darling Piers Morgan is complicit in the phone hacking scandal rocking the Murdoch empire while Morgan was editor at the Daily Mirror and says he has a recording to prove it.

Piers Morgan, a Rupert Murdoch protege and staunch defender of his former boss, was inexplicably hired by CNN to replace the retiring Larry King. Morgan’s CNN show has constantly underperformed in the 9PM timeslot.

As reported in Forbes, Paul Staines, who blogs under the name Guido Fawkes:

Piers Morgan was editor of a the British tabloid, the Daily Mirror, at a time when many British tabloid reporters were committing illegal hacking of voicemails. Morgan has vociferously denied personal involvement in or knowledge of anything like that under his watch but, a prominent political blogger claims to have a recording that proves otherwise.

If it delivers as advertised, it will be the first major expansion of the hacking scandal outside the confines of News Corp. So far, the only proven instances of voicemail hacking took place at the News of the World tabloid, although there have been numerous unsubstantiated claims of others. Despite Morgan’s denial, the Mirror’s parent company said it would undertake an internal investigation after a former employee, James Hipwell, was quoted saying hacking was commonplace at the paper during his tenure there, which overlapped Morgan’s.

A CNN spokeswoman declined to comment.

I wrote to CNN complaining about their decision to employ Piers Morgan in light of his alleged involvement in the phone hacking scandal. As expected, they punted the issue and sent this reply:

Hello Christopher,

Thank you for contacting CNN. Piers Morgan talked to Wolf Blitzer 1-on-1 about this on Tuesday, July 19. Here’s what he had to say:

Sincerely yours, LeAnn A.
Viewer Communications Management

The link goes to a CNN interview between Wolf Blitzer and Piers Morgan where Morgan denies any knowledge or involvement with phone hacking on his watch at either the News of the World or the Daily Mirror.

If Paul Staines delivers a recording placing Piers Morgan at the heart of the phone hacking scandal, I wonder if how long until CNN: The Most Trusted Name in News, sends him packing?

Editor Addition: A reader from London just sent this link to me. Thanks, Nigel.

Christopher – I love that you wrote to CNN to complain about Piers Morgan. Flawless.

As to his behavior while under Murdoch’s thumb, there’s simply no way he is the only editor who had higher standards than the rest of the scumbags hired to head those British scandal rags. Look at his CNN program. It’s celebrities and gossip. You can see him eating up famous singers and actors every word like pickled eel.

  2. ajihani says:

CNN stopped being the most trusted name in news when they bought by Time Warner and the suits who run them decided to start competing with FIXED News. Always last in the ratings, I would like to ask someone, how’s that effort competing with FIXED News going for you?

As for Piers Morgan, I find him an insufferable bore.

  3. Randy Arroyo says:

My fingers are crossed that Piers Morgan is arrested and prosecuted in the phone hacking scandal.

  4. Robyn says:

Piers Morgan is a turd. No, He’s that nugget that won’t flush.

  5. Abbey Peripatetic says:

I believe Piers Morgan will be the final straw at CNN.

Nobody watches them and their credibility is as bad as FOX, which apparently, it the standard they now aspire to reach. Maybe Ted Turner will enter the picture and fire everyone and clean house?

Otherwise, just switch to an all-movie format and exit quietly.

  6. JollyRoger says:

Common sense said that Morgan had to be as dirty as one of Vitter’s diapers. But I don’t expect that this will make much difference to the network of Erick Erickscum.

  7. Shayne K. says:

Piers Morgan is a legend in his own mind. He’s also a fame whore.

I hope the US State Dept deports his ass. I’m sick and tired of seeing his ugly mug on every American channel I turn to. I have a policy. If he’s on the program, I use the clicker.

  8. The Real Adam says:

Watched a portion of Piers Morgan’s program early on and found him to be a celebrity-fawning lightweight, not qualified to be on TMZ or any other syndicated TV gossip show.

I haven’t watched him again and don’t plan to.

CNN has really managed to troll the bottom of the barrel with this guy. Too bad Larry King wanted to retire. He wasn’t perfect but he’s 1 million percent better than this snobbish Brit.

  9. fran says:

Viewers don’t have to wait for CNN to dump Piers Morgan, they can vote with their remote & hasten the process.
