Susan G Komen Foundation Would Rather Be Associated with a Handgun Than Planned Parenthood?

Friday, February 3, 2012

The Susan G. Komen Foundation – the organization known for its pretty pink ribbons and 5K foot races to raise money for Breast Cancer research and prevention has had a tough few weeks of late.

They were thrust into the news for ending their grants to Planned Parenthood.

While the Komen Foundation doesn’t want to be associated with the nation’s largest abortion-provider, they don’t mind partnering up with a handgun maker.

This handgun is a real beauty. A portion of the sale of each P-22 Hope Edition will be donated to the Seattle Branch of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. It retails for a cool $429.99.

Aren’t rightwing organizations a hoot?

Editor Update: Susan G. Komen for the Cure founder Nancy Brinker today apologized to Planned Parenthood and announced Komen would continue to make grants to the family planning agency. It’s amazing what a little bad press will do.

Thanks for posting this. I knew about the Planned Parenthood fracas but I hadn’t heard about Komen associating with a firearm manufacturer. This is all I need to know to never give them another dime. It’s amazing to discover who this organization truly is and how we have been duped all these years.

What a difference a day makes! The Komen foundation got serious pushback from this move to dump funding for Planned Parenthood. Komen had allocated $700K to Planned Parenthood for cancer screening funds– donations of more than $1 million poured in to Planned Parenthood emergency cancer screening fund- and several staffers turn in resignations, saying Komen foundation values did not align with theirs.
It seemed the only remaining question was how long before the Komen foundation would reverse the decision…sure enough :

(CNN) — The Susan G. Komen foundation has reversed a controversial decision not to renew funding for some Planned Parenthood projects, the group said in a statement Friday.
“We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” the statement said. “We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.”
Planned Parenthood said Tuesday that the foundation had “succumbed to political pressure” by cutting its funding for breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood amid increased scrutiny by Congress over how Planned Parenthood provides abortion services.

Sheez! But that gun sure is purty.

  4. fran says:

    The “Hope Edition” gun?

Looks like the Komen foundation shot themselves in the foot on these decisions !

  5. okjimm says:

Too late. Done is Done. I will donate to PP directly. (well, no big deal. I did anyways) … you can too.

  6. Estacada says:

NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg is donating $600,000 to Planned Parenthood.

It’s a shame that Susan G. Komen for the Cure played politics with an issue as important as breast cancer but this is what happens when a George W. Bush crony, Nancy G. Brinker is put in a position of power. Let this be a lesson.

  8. Walk on Socks says:

The Komen Foundation should be investigated by the federal government.

Something stinks and it isn’t Nancy G. Brinker’s feet. Now that the scab has been pulled back, what ha been revealed is a frightening nest of far right activists. I must now question everything they do and support. Were they contributors to opposing Prop 8? What Republican politicians have they contributed to over they years?

Eric Holder needs to get off his butt and do his job.

  9. feminazi says:

When I told my daughter about Susan G. Komen and their ties to rightwing groups she admitted she knew nothing about it. My daughter has run several 5K races to raise money for breast cancer. I think she was angry and she vowed to never give them another donation. You think you’re helping a worthy cause to learn you’re really helping the bad guys.

  10. Pechanga says:

Nancy Brinker has learned a valuable lesson about the power of social media letting people from the religious right set your business agenda.

    It’s a recipe for disaster.

  11. distributorcap says:

Komen thought this whole thing would just blow over and that the money would still flow. – little did they realize that a HUGE chunk of their dough (which of course much goes to Brinker’s salary of $00K) comes from the left, democrats etc.

SGK is done…. they cannot recover from this
and it couldnt make me happier – from now i will just donate directly to PP – who is headed by Cecile Richards – Ann’s daughter
