This, is George Bush’s parting blow to Murika.

The nation’s unemployment rate bolted to 7.2 percent in December, the highest level in 16 years, as nervous employers slashed 524,000 jobs, capping one of the worst years in modern history for American workers.

The Labor Department’s report, released Friday, underscored the grim toll the deepening recession is having on workers and companies. And it highlights the difficulty President-elect Barack Obama faces in resuscitating the flat-lined economy. This year has gotten off to a rough start with a flurry of big corporate layoffs, pointing to another year of hefty job reductions.

Predictions? Expect the Bush Republicans to blame Barack Obama for the unemployment crisis within a month of him being sworn into office.

    They already ARE blaming Obama.

At the horrible Thanksgiving get-together I was frog-marched to, My wife’s aunt started repeating the talking points Oxy-Moron Limbaugh taught her, which caused me to jump dead in her stupid ass. I didn’t go to the Christmas gathering, preferring to gather with my own blood kin for that one. Since I didn’t show up, my wife’s idiot uncle decided to give my wife a lecture about the big bad Democrat recession.

Those people are not going to enjoy seeing me again.

Jolly Roger – How horrible. Families can be the biggest morons of all. I’ve heard rightwingers call into radio chat shows on the drive home and their level of stupidity is like a parody. The results of three decades of dumbing down Americans I fear.

  3. Jim says:

It will take generations to recover from the damage inflicted by Bush and his cronies.

  4. libhomo says:

This is why the Stimulus Plan must involve direct job creation. Tax cuts won’t help the economy. They never have.

  5. Randy Arroyo says:

I hope things turn around or we could have rioting in the streets. People can only take so much before they revolt.

  6. To add insult to injury, the “standards” they use to measure unemployment are grossly misleading, thanks to changes instituted in the shiny, happy Reagan era. Jobless statistics show only those people who are actively collecting unemployment, and exclude those who have exhausted their benefits, those who are between benefit extensions, those who have given up looking, and those who are underemployed or have been forced to take part-time jobs when they want and need full-time. I heard on Thom Hartmann yesterday that the figures are AT LEAST 4-5% higher (if not more) than is being reported by the current method, and an economist on one of the MSNBC shows gave roughly the same statistics. We are already in double-digit unemployment when we measure it honestly.

My husband, who is eminently qualified in at least 2 separate fields, has been unemployed for 14 months. He spends untold hours searching job listings and sending in applications, and has had fewer than 20 interviews during that time period, despite all his hard work. Now we face what I’m sure is facing many others–there may be a better job market in another city or another state, but we can’t afford to send him there to do interviews, nor can we afford to move. Thanks a lot, George. I hope you rot in hell with the rest of your family and friends.
