When did the Bush administration defy the Geneva Convention? That treaty was concerned with treatment of soldiers in a war, not enemy combatants who are neither part of a national army nor signatories of the treaty. There has never been an attempt to enforce those rules to renegade terrorists. They don’t have any rights to certain civil rights because they are outside that legal stricture and behave as outlaws to that treaty.

I’m glad to hear Obama reiterating his adherence to principles in regard to torture.

I hope he actually keeps this promise.

Adhere to the Geneva Convention and close Gitmo. It’s a shame and an embarrassment for America. I am waiting for Obama to make the announcement.

  5. Fran says:

I’m glad Obama plans to adhere to international & US laws & treaties, but it is a reflection of the sad state of affairs, when we are happy when our new president proclaims they will follow the laws.
    This should be standard procedure.
It was Bush that said he has the right to “interpret” the Geneva conventions & Gitmo is in direct violation.
