Before Mel Gibson made headlines for spewing anti-Semitic, racist, misogynistic, and anti-immigrant slurs at his ex-girlfriend, the star of such movies as “Road Warrior” and “Braveheart” was known for his highly publicized homophobic rants.
In 1991, Gibson told the Spanish-language newspaper El Pais:
“They take it up the ass, this [pointing to his butt] is only for taking a shit. With this look, who’s going to think I’m gay? I don’t lend myself to that type of confusion. Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?”
Gibson remained defiant and unapologetic for years, until he agreed to talk with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
But Mel Gibson clearly has serious issues with gays and lesbians, likely stemming from his involvement in the secretive, anti-Catholic cult Opus Dei.
The New York Daily News reported Gibson had strongly counseled the late Heath Ledger against taking the role of Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee’s critically acclaimed film “Brokeback Mountain.” The role apparently ran counter to Gibson’s morality.
