Sarah Palin’s Church: “A Dead Person Has Been Raised”

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Sarah Palin belongs to the Wasilla Assembly of God Church of Wasilla, Alaska. This is no ordinary church where people gather to reflect on state of the world, pray for a sick family member, or to raise money to help a financially struggling family suddenly thrown into poverty by a job loss.

Palin attended the Wasilla Assembly of God Church from her teenage years through 2002, when political obligations started taking up much of her time. But make no mistake: Palin still considers herself a member in good standing of this church which probably explains why she hasn’t talked much about her religion since joining the Republican ticket.

Palin’s former pastor, Tim McGraw, says that like many Pentecostal churches, some members speak in tongues, although he says he’s never seen Palin do so. Church member Caroline Spangler says “When the spirit comes on you, you utter things that nobody else can understand. Only God can understand what is coming out of our mouths.”

Some Pentecostals from Assembly of God also believe in “faith healing” and in the “end times,” which is a violent upheaval that they believe will deliver Jesus Christ’s second coming.

“Our basic belief is that God is God and he knows where history is going and he has a purposeful plan and within the middle of that plan we live in an environment in our world where certain events would take place,” says McGraw. “Sarah wasn’t taught to look for one particular sign  — a cataclysmic sign. She knew as every Christian does that God is sovereign and he is in control.”

In this YouTube video of Sarah Palin’s Wasilla Assembly of God church, you will hear a song sung over and over by its members. “This world has nothing for me, I will follow,” the leitmotif goes. One woman reports seeing “a dead person raised” and there is talk of fire shooting through cell phones.

Can you hear me now?

Well, watching this video sure made me lose my appetite and not want breakfast.

I’ve never been to Alaska. I thought it would be lovely place to one day take a cruise but after hearing about the state and its most infamous resident, Sarah Palin, I think I’ll pass and go to Hawaii instead.

  2. DMason says:

You know who else I think speaks in tongues? Ellen’s ex, Anne Heche. She’s a real lunatic too, who thinks she’s from another planet. Her off-world name is Galaxia. What is scary to me is, if McCain wins, this crazy bitch will be a heartbeat and a melanoma away from the presidency. This can’t be allowed to happen. Obama and Biden must win in November.

  3. Rachel says:

What a perfectly terrifying video. These people remind me of stories about humanity during the dark ages — before the age of enlightenment and reason gave birth to the modern world. I don’t want anyone from the Assembly of God Church making decisions about the nuclear option. One of them might actually push the button because in their diseased mind, they think it will usher in the rapture.

  4. Harry says:

What the fuck is “speaking in tongues?” Ever since McCandy arrived, I keep hearing this term. Doesn’t everyone need the tongue to enunciate words?

  5. feminazi says:

So Palin’s church is claiming they can bring the dead back to life? Is this a church or a mental institution we’re talking about? I have to admit, as a Jew, I have no knowledge of the Assembly of God Church but it sounds like a cult. Maybe they can hook up with the Scientologists and anoint baby Suri as their Savior?

  6. R.J. Lebeau says:

Speaking in tongues is the Devil, and so is this church. We must stop them.

  7. Bill Hussein O'Reilly says:

This Palin broad is like the Piper Laurie mother in the movie “Carrie.”

She’s a crazy, lunatic and may light herself on fire if she doesn’t get her way. Hey, wouldn’t that make some entertaining television? 🙂

  8. Joe in Colorado says:

Give a person a Bible and they develop an instant psychosis with visions of the second coming and the end of the world. I have to believe people like Sarah Palin and members of this wacko church weren’t mentally and emotionally balanced to begin with. I mean, come on, raising people from the dead? If they can do this, then I want them to reanimate Jim Morrison so he can cut another album!

  9. VicoDANIEL says:

Let’s not forget, Palin sees the Iraq war as “God’s plan.”

She also said building an oil pipeline was the work of “God.”

Plus, she wants library books to meet strict religious litmus tests and she wants creationism taught in place of science.

How do you say, the Dark Ages 2.0?

  10. RainBro says:

Scary, scary sh*t… I’m with Aunt Peg.
C’mon girl, let’s get over to Hawaii, where we can go surfing and volcano dancing…

I’m absolutely tired of having to battle these freakin’ lunatics 24/7. What the hell is wrong with this country, anyway? Shall we make a list?

  11. Gryphen says:

Well I guess there is really nothing we can do.

    Sarah Palin is JESUS reborn!

She gives birth to a child without being pregnant.

Mesmerizes thousands of crazed Republicans with her sermons.

And she raises the dead! (Well okay it was not HER, but it was her church and that is just as good.)

Apparently the Republicans have decided that if Obama is “the one”, then they need a “one” of their own.

  12. Sasha in MN says:

    Mad moose disease runs rampant.

  13. Brigadoon says:

Maybe the “dead” she raised wasn’t a person but her husband Todd’s penis? Maybe she has a special way of “speaking in tongues” that is akin to a snake charmer? Just saying…. 😉

  14. David says:

Wow…the ignorance on this blog is overwhelming. As an engineer/economist who happens to have actually read the entire Bible, please let me cast some light on the comments made here:

The YouTube video is a hack piece at best. Any accurate comments would require a viewer to actually see the individual segments in their entirety rather than the confusing montage that’s posted.

Speaking in tongues: The first person to mention this was Jesus in Mark 16, although it’s mentioned in Acts and 1 Corinthians too. While it can be crazy to see/hear, it is a topic that can be researched and verified with a simple Google search. It is worth mentioning that the guidelines for speaking in tongues include mention of NOT speaking in tongues in a group unless there is someone present who has the gift of interpretation to tell everyone what was said. A note…speaking in tongues CAN be of the devil, but it is neither absolutely good nor absolutely evil.

Faith healing: A simple Google search will tell you more than you want to know on this topic as well. Why is it that patients who are prayed for recover faster than patients who aren’t, people have no problem thinking “good thoughts” towards someone else, or believe in the power of “collective thinking”, or positive thinking, but you criticize faith healing? It seems pretty judgemental.

“This world has nothing for me. I will follow”: This is a simple statement that is saying that the people realize that obsession with wealth, power, etc. is unhealthy and I will follow the teachings of Jesus. Another way to look at it is that the obsession with wealth and power has put us in the position where we have a national debt, bad housing market, record divorce rates, and maybe those aren’t good things. When Hindus, Muslims, or Buddhist’s make similar claims, are you critical of them, or is your hate just focused on Christians?

End Times: Unlike Ahmadinejad and other radical Muslims, Christians don’t believe that the end times can be hastened by our actions. The Bible would consider that to be murder.

Bringing the dead back to life: This is also mentioned in the book of Mark by Jesus. It is not something that individuals or the church does (nor should they take credit for it) so they can’t raise Jim Morrisson. It is something that God does. If you’ve ever watched medical shows, or even “That’s Incredible”, you’ve seen stories of dead people who come back to life. You can also read a powerful story about a man who was dead for 90 minutes in the book “90 Minutes in Heaven”. In short, believing in something that has/does happen does not make someone crazy.

Creationism in place of science: If you have ANY evidence of evolution, please go to drdino to claim your $250,000 challenge. In addition, please change all of the nations physics books so that they can remove the law of entropy….after all, either the THEORY of evolution or the LAW of entropy will have to be eliminated, because they can’t both co-exist.

What’s wrong with this country? Ignorant people who are comfortable in their ignorance. Come on, people…read a little…learn a little. Maybe instead of judging a video montage, you should research the individual components. Instead of throwing blanket statements against Christians, maybe you should read the Bible to see what it’s really all about. Or, you could just stay ignorant and make cute statements on blogs.

  15. Idaho Librul says:

Up here in Idaho there are tons of Assembly of God Churches and Pentecostal Churches.

The standing joke is, don’t break down while driving past one of them because they will run out to help you alright but the price is a sermon and the effort to get you to join.

  16. Tiny Dancer says:

The more we read about Sarah Palin, the clear it is that she’s a psycho.

  17. fran says:

Do the cell phone companies know about this Cell Phone Annointing?

This will be a new line item charged on your cell phone bill.

They played a clip of Palin Preachin’ God-Wars on *The View* the ABC Woman’s kvetch show. So this clip will see the light of day in mass media. They damn near crucified Obama for what his preacher said- Palin has some ‘splainin’ to do.

The fundies will love her even more.
Those with rational thought processes, will be mortified.

    Palin does not understand the
    Separation of Church & Hate

  18. Aunt Peg says:

David opines: “If you have ANY evidence of evolution…”

David, honey, please show me any evidence of Christ or God? Not a book of fables but real, factual, scientific evidence.

    Then we can talk.

  19. Peace Nick says:

The woman in the video actually said they had raised a dead person.

If I hadn’t heard and seen it, I would not believe it but she’s right there in the You Tube.

These are the sort of nutty things crazy people say.

  20. I see the troll are back Christopher. These whacko’s make David Koresh look almost normal. Jesus protect me from your followers please!

  21. Estacada says:

    Oh for Christ’s sake.

When you’re dead, you’re dead. Period.

And no amount of faerie dust or garlic powder or caterwheels can change this and I don’t care what it say in the Bible or in Harry Potter.

    Dead, is dead, is dead.

  22. Sasha in MN says:

    Amen Peg!

BTW Dave, being the engineer/economy/bible expert, why don’t you get busy and fix the frickin economy, finish the bridge to somewhere and pray for some major miracles with your bible in tow?

  23. Sasha in MN says:

“Faith healing: A simple Google search will tell you more than you want to know on this topic as well. Why is it that patients who are prayed for recover faster than patients who aren’t, people have no problem thinking “good thoughts” towards someone else, or believe in the power of “collective thinking”, or positive thinking, but you criticize faith healing? It seems pretty judgemental.”

Ummmm Dave, yeah on your side it seems pretty judgmental since you choose to ignore the numerous cases where MINORS DIE because their parents want to treat by faith and their kids have no say. There’s a vast difference in positive THINKING, not necessarily PRAYING and a hell of a difference when someone’s life is on the line!

PS, please end the starvation of third world countries by praying for falling manna and producing endless amounts of fish since you seem to be glowing in awesomeness.

  24. Randy Arroyo says:

David the Bible thumper is a fuckwit.

  25. keith says:
