Twinkies to Make Summer Return

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

If you miss eating the iconic Twinkie, just hang in there a few more months.

A new owner of Hostess Brands Inc.’s snack cakes hopes to have Twinkies back on U.S. store shelves by this summer, according to a member of the purchasing group.

Daren Metropoulos, a member of his family’s private equity firm, told Reuters in an email on Tuesday:

“Our family is thrilled to have the opportunity to reestablish these iconic brands with new creative marketing ideas and renewed sales efforts and investment.”

Daren’s father, Dean Metropoulos, joined with Apollo Global Management to offer $410 million for Twinkies and other snack cakes. No other bidders emerged.

Besides the iconic Twinkie, Hostess’ snack cake line also includes cakes, which include Cupcakes, Ding Dongs and Ho Hos.

My kids ate Twinkies every day and my nephew loves them. Most kids (and many adults), if given a choice to eat raw carrots or Twinkies, will choose the Twinkie. I like them too. Personally, I’m happy they’re coming back.

Fantastic! Another American icon product filled with chemicals, such as artificial flavors/ colors/additives,hydrogenated fats, empty calories…ready to once again hit the store shelves and further fatten up and poison Americans. Can’t wait…!

  3. Unconditional1 says:

Of course, there always is the chance that the “new and improved” Twinkies will be made with organic ingredients and healthy substances. However, since the less ingredients there are in foods these days in the U.S. the more expensive they are, I doubt very much that we will see $6 dollar a single Twinkie items and related products, bristling from the store shelves.

Love Twinkies. They’re as American as apple pie and burgers and fries.

  5. Vivzz says:

The food police have too much free time on their hands. They nearly destroyed this classic American snack food. I for one, believe in choice and I resent being told what to eat or not eat. I don’t need Emperor Bloomberg or Michele Obama to tell me what to put in my mouth.

  6. I’m glad they’re coming back. The ones Vons/Safeway sells under The Snack Artist label suck.

  7. The Real Adam says:

    Mississippi today passed a so-called “anti-Bloomberg” bill.

While Bloomberg wasn’t responsible for the original Twinkie’s demise, the Mississippi bill seeks to stop governments from telling citizens what they can or cannot eat or drink. I usually don’t agree with anything from the South but I think Mississippi is spot-on here.

Personally, I like a Twinkie every so often. I don’t eat them daily but a few times each month. I’m happy to read they are returning this summer to supermarket shelves.
