First was the epochal Phoenix Lights event in 1997. Now, there’s the San Francisco Lights phenomena.

According to CBS San Francisco:

A viewer told CBS 5 about some surprising video captured early Sunday morning in San Francisco’s Mission District.

In the video, a series of lights fly in formation above the city before appearing to take a diamond shape and eventually disappearing.

Several commenters on the Mission Mission blog said that they had also noticed the aircraft.

“Looked like flame, you know, fireballs in the sky,” Barrios said in an interview with CBS 5.

David Shelley took pictures as the lights hovered over him early Sunday Morning. “Kind of looked like a fiery, floaty thing,” he said.

Witnesses said the lights flickered on and off, then took different shapes.

“So in the beginning they looked like flying candles, and then afterwards they started making formations, triangular formations,” said Barrios.

Bing Quock, assistant director of the Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences said, “It’s not a planet, it’s not a constellation, it’s not meteors, it’s not the moon.”

CBS 5 contacted federal aviation officials, and they said they have received no reports of strange lights in the sky, and aren’t sure what the aircraft spotted in the video is. So for now, the flying objects remain unidentified.

  1. Brigadoon says:

Expect the Feds to say they were weather balloons. That’s their stock answer.

  2. Unconditional1 says:

Cosmic farmers have been planting and harvesting DNA on this planet for 4 billion years. But, oh wait…humans are the only er…”intelligent” life in this 17 trillion light year across spatiotemporal physical universe! Or, maybe it was just old Santa Clause, trying out some new Rudolphs!!

  3. R.J. says:

Falling meteors? That sounds like another BS answer we’ll get from the government.

  4. Unconditional1 says:

Just in from Fox news! The GOP has officially proclaimed the lights to be Santa Clause doing some pretesting of some state-of-the-art reindeer with better nose-lighting than the red-nosed Rudolph!

  5. Rachel says:

The War on Christmas is over and Bill-O can breathe again!

  6. ChiTOM says:

I believe we’re not alone. With billions of stars with planets orbiting them in our galaxy, the numerical probability of life like earth and even more advanced, seems certain. But I have never had the great chance to see a UFO. Doesn’t seem fair.

  7. Grrrr! says:

Just wait until Fox News gets ahold of this story !

“Mysterious S.F. Lights May Signal Alien Invasion and IT’S ALL OBAMA’S FAULT !!”

“Obama Immigration Policies Cause Dangerous New Alien Threat”

“Obama To Embark On Intergalactic Apology Tour” …

etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum …

  8. Estacada says:

ChiTOM – Me neither! I’ve been to Rachel, NV about 2 1/2 hours from Vegas hoping Area 51 would grant me a UFO sighting but alas, all I got was cold hands from the frigid desert night and disappoint to take back to the slot machines.

But I won $100 on the slots!

  9. Marburg says:

Many nations have released their UFO files to the public. They include:
    Mexico
    Russia
    Canada
    England
    Argentina
    Brazil
    Japan
    China

Naturally, the USA maintains we have no such files.

  10. Randy Arroyo says:

    Way cool!

  11. ultra says:

The mysterious lights are easily explained: some kids applied glow-in-the-dark paint to some night-flying birds in order to terrify the local population.

  12. Adirondacky says:

I’ve never seen a UFO either. I hope to one day.

  13. Peace Nick says:

I have seen a UFO. It was years ago on a drive through New Mexico.

Of course, I can’t prove it but I know what I saw and it wasn’t of this earth. My passenger saw it too and said the same thing. We were sober, the night was young and the sky was clear.

  14. fran says:

What were these Frisco dwellers smoking?

  15. Joe in Colorado says:

The photograph suggests some type of light formation over San Francisco. Close encounters of a second kind is when evidence such as a photo or sound captures the event. Several years ago, a group of hikers captured a strange light formation over Colorado Springs. The “experts” were never able to explain it and concluded it was a UFO.

  16. ChiTOM,

I share a similar view to yours when it comes to life beyond earth.

NASA has identified 800 to 1,000 planets in the so-called “Goldilocks Zone”, planets not too close to their sun and not too far away, with an atmosphere and water. These M-class planets offer the best hope for life in our galaxy.

One day, in the future, I think we will discover life is much more common than we previously knew.

  17. Big Hank says:

I’ve seen a UFO. Trust me. We’re not alone.

  18. Rendaculous says:

My wife and I, along with 350 passengers on a flight from Honolulu to Los Angeles, saw something flying to the left side of the Boeing 747 we were flying on.

The craft was black with no lights or visible windows. It was not a commercial airplane and it was too large to be a military plane. If I had to estimate the length of the “object” trailing us, I would say it was 50% longer than the 747.

Flight attendants saw it, as did the passengers. The “object” followed us for approximately 30 to 40 minutes until it moved away and up and I mean straight up. Do I believe it was a UFO? You know it.
