A midnight screening at the Century 16 Movie Theaters located at the Aurora Town Center — a Denver suburb, ended in carnage Thursday as a lone shooter opened fire on movie goers, wounding at least 50 and killing 12.
Witnesses said the man appeared at the front of the theater with a rifle, handgun and gas mask. He threw a canister that released what was described as tear gas, before he opened fire on the unsuspecting crowd.
According to the New York Times, Holmes’ arsenal included an AR-15 assault rifle, a Remington 12-gauge shotgun and a .40-caliber Glock handgun. A fourth gun, not used in the attack — another Glock pistol, was found in his car.
Police have apprehended a 24-year-old male named James Eagen Holmes, of North Aurora, CO. Holmes was student in the process from withdrawing from a doctorate program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado at Denver.
