CNN’s Dr. Drew Accused of Pocketing $275,000 to Push the Drug Wellbutrin

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Dr. Drew Pinsky, CNN’s go to darling of all human behavioral matters, was fingered by the Feds for accepting$275,000 to push the drug Wellbutrin SR while hosting his radio and television show Loveline.

Dr. Drew pinsky rose to fame hosting the reality shows Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and Sober House touted Wellbutrin SR for its ability to “increase libido” in depressed patients.

He joined CNN in 2010 to host Dr. Drew on the network’s HLN channel.

The shocking revelations surfaced during the Federal government’s case against drug company GlaxoSmithKline, which agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor criminal charges and pay $3 billion for committing healthcare fraud.

The settlement is the largest such case in U.S. history.

Pinsky reportedly accepted the six-figure sum over the course of two months in 1999 for pushing the virtues of the antidepressant “in settings where it did not appear that [he] was speaking for GSK,” according to the U.S. Justice Department case.

Way to go CNN. Why hasn’t this quack been terminated?

  1. Randy Arroyo says:

Wow. This is shocking indeed. The FCC needs to fine CNN for employing this clown.

  2. Adirondacky says:

Pinsky always creeped me out. Now that I’ve read he took bribes to push drugs to patients, I think my intuition about him was correct all along. Shame on CNN for employing him. So wrong on so many levels.

  3. feminazi says:

There was a time when even the appearance of such an impropriety would’ve led to the termination of CNN’s relationship with Dr. Drew. Especially, when the public’s trust was involved. But today, I’m sure CNN sees this was good publicity for them so why fire him?

  4. Marcus Ybanez says:

In 2012, a doctor can’t even accept a calendar from a drug company.

$275,000 is a lot of money. I am not shocked by Pinsky’s behavior but I am angry CNN continues to employ him. Have other CNN medical people like Dr. Sanjay Gupta engaged in such behavior?

  5. Joe in Colorado says:

“Doctors” Pinsky; Oz, and McGraw. All are charlatans.

  6. Rationa l& Scientific & Anti-Religious, and worried says:

I’m crushed……. I gotta go get me a Joint to get over this………..

  7. Brigadoon says:

Dr. Drew Pinsky is a fucking dope pusher. Fire him, CNN. For once, do the right thing.

  8. Estacada says:

What a perfect thread for the 4th of July!

Life, liberty and the acceptance of money from drug companies. I have to wonder what the Founding Fathers would say about this?

  9. Jim says:

What a scumbag. So much for ethics, much less patient safety.

  10. fran says:

    TAINT good.

  11. hipolito says:

At a macro level, why doesn’t the AMA pulled Pinsky’s license?

  12. ajihani says:

Dr. Drew is a drug dealer in a suit and tie.

  13. retahyajyajav says:

This is the most compelling argument why TV should not employ celebrity doctors. If their pockets are line with drug company coin, then there’s an inherent conflict of interest and the best interest of the patient is compromised. I agree, CNN needs to fire him and the AMA needs to pull Drew Pinsky’s license. He’s dangerous.

  14. maryjane says:

Once liked but now hate. He really has disappointed alot of people.he must be on drugs….

  15. Sadly this is just the tip of the iceberg of a much larger story.
