This is interesting. Vice President “Uncle Joe” Joe Biden made headlines Sunday appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press where he said and I quote:
“I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And frankly, I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that. Who do you love? And will you be loyal to the person you love?”
Biden’s inclusive proclamation stands in stark contrast to his boss, President Barack Obama who has repeatedly said he opposes same-sex marriage on religious grounds.
Uncle Joe’s remarks were welcomed by the LGBT community.
But longtime Washington journalist Howard Kurtz ain’t buying it. Kurtz wrote today in his Daily Beast column that President Obama, concerned about losing the gay vote in November, dispatched his Number Two in a calculated effort to secure the LGBT vote.
There is absolutely no question that Biden’s response was cleared by the White House. Vice presidents are not allowed to freelance on talk shows, especially on such a sensitive issue. So Obama was sending out Biden to further mollify the gay community without having to actually take a stand himself. It all seems a bit calculating to me.
Me too, Howie. Me too.
