Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano was the target of extortion by a man who claimed he had a relationship with the pitcher when the men were in high school.

Sports Illustrated reports:

Police in Pavano’s hometown of Southington, CT about 18 miles southwest of Hartford, said in the affidavit that they began investigating the allegations after Pavano’s sister, Michelle DeGennaro, complained in December that she had received several troublesome Facebook messages from Pavano’s high school classmate, Christian Bedard. DeGennaro told police Bedard — who is gay, invented the story about having a relationship with her brother in an attempt to extort her family.

According to police, Bedard allegedly wrote to DeGennaro:

“I have serious juicy book offers … to the point that the only way your brother is getting out of this … is with a heartfelt apology and a navy range rover with tan leather. If I’m going to drop a 1.2 million dollar book deal I want something. That is my best offer an apology and a land rover and I’ll kill the project.”

Pavano has been with the Twins since 2009, after a season with Cleveland and three with the Yankees. He is scheduled to start opening day on April 6 in Baltimore.

  1. Brigadoon says:

Extortion is a very serious crime. If true, this Bedard is a moron for trying it. He will face prison time and lose everything. What the hell is wrong with people?

  2. Joe in Colorado says:

Controversy follows Carl Pavano around like flies on a pile of dog shit on a hot summer day. His time as a Yankee, where he was paid $40 million, was marked by an car accident where his stripper girl friend was injured and Pavano was injured so badly he didn’t pitch for several seasons. He’s like the subject of a country-western song.

  3. The Real Adam says:

My read of the article is different.

Pavano’s sister, Michelle DeGennaro, sounds like she’s more worried about her brother’s sexual orientation becoming known to the world than any genuine fear for her family’s safety.

  4. Mets Fan says:

I thought maybe we were on our way to having the first “out” major league baseball player?

    Oh well. Not this season.

  5. Rachel says:

Too bad Pavano doesn’t just man up and own up to the relationship? Even if he isn’t gay, a lot of men and women experiment in high school. It’s a time of self-discovery. What’s the big deal? In an era where people are becoming more proactive about bullying, Pavano could play an important role in showing young people you can be gay or bi and successful in sports.

  6. Walk on Socks says:

Pavano looks old. His hard partying days have taken their toll.

  7. Matteo says:

Walk on Socks – I was thinking the same thing. Hadn’t seen Pavano in a few seasons but the Twins picture says it all. According to Wikipedia:

On August 15, 2006, Pavano broke two ribs in an automobile accident after he hit another vehicle with his Porsche in West Palm Beach, Florida. Also involved in the wreck was Gia Allemand, who Pavano was dating at the time. However, he did not tell the Yankees about the incident until August 28, the day they informed him that they planned for him to come off the disabled list to play that Thursday.

In spring training in 2007, Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina said that Pavano needed to prove that he wanted to pitch for the team. Mussina said he did not believe he was the only Yankee who felt this way. “It didn’t look good from a player’s and teammate’s standpoint,” Mussina said of Pavano’s injuries.

  8. Frank in Castaic says:

Andy Pettite can out-pitch Carl Pavano with both arms tied behind his back. It looks like we will be seeing Pettite again this season too. He’s a great starter.

  9. Bill Hussein O'Reilly says:

Christian Bedard is a douchebag. Prosecute his ass.

  10. Revolutionary Soldier says:

I think Christian Bedard prosecuted Carl Pavano’s ass.😉

  11. Harry says:

Revolutionary Soldier – Lamest comment ever.

  12. DMason says:

Maybe I’m dense but where did Christian Bedard threaten Carl Pavano or his family? He tried to extort money and a car from him in order to buy his silence about a gay affair. What Bedard did was despicable, not to mention illegal but Pavano’s sister is whining about fearing for her safety. Sounds to me like the Pavano clan is trying to cover-up something they know to be true in order to protect Pavano’s reputation in major league baseball.

  13. Estacada says:

I vaguely remember Pavano when he pitched for the Yankees. This was before the car accident and the butt injury.

There was always something about him that just creeped me out. Could never put my finger on it.

  14. Debbie Banuelos says:

    I have an idea?

Maybe both Carl Pavano and Anderson Cooper can come out together at the same time? Pavano can be a guest on Cooper’s daytime yap show and the pair can clear the air.

    What do you think?

  15. ajihani says:

I agree with Rachel. This is an opportunity Pavano missed.

  16. feminazi says:

I agree with Rachel too. This is an opportunity for Carl Pavano to show young people and sports fans alike that you can be gay or bi and still a successful athlete. As for the extortion, as others have said, this is shocking and illegal.

  17. Spud says:

feminazi: How is this an opportunity for Carl to show that you can be gay or bi if, in fact, he is neither one? What is it about Bedard’s allegations that make you jump to the conclusion that they are true?

  18. Jack says:

This is a dispicable story. There might be some truth to it, or there might not regarding Pavano. The point is that a ridiculous parody of a human being named Bedard is trying to extort money from him. The facts of the case are irrelevant because Bedard is nothing but a crook preying on a low-end celebrity. Despite being a low-end baller, ballplayers can afford cheesey British Land Rovers (hey, let’s make a vehicle based on the design of a box!). It must be awful to be a celebrity target. Karma will visit Bedard.
