Former Veep Dick Cheney Lobbied for MD Same-Sex Marriage Bill

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Former Vice President Dick Cheney lobbied the Maryland state legislature to pass a marriage equality bill that made it through the House of Delegates last Friday.

That’s right. Arch conservative Dick Cheney is to the left of President Barack Obama on the issue of same-sex marriage.

Politics really do make for strange bedfellows.

Cheney, whose daughter Mary is a lesbian, lives with her partner Heather and their two children in nearby Virginia.

Wade Kach, a Republican legislator from Baltimore County, told The Baltimore Sun he received an offer to talk with Cheney, whom Kach regards as a “great man,” along with messages of support for the bill from other political heavyweights including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, who is gay.

Dick Cheney owns a home on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, has long been a champion for gay marriage.

This is not the least bit surprising to me.

I read in at least two or three publications that when Cheney’s boss, the idiot Bush, was trying to push for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in all 50 states, it was Cheney who opposed Bush and made him stop the hate campaign.

  2. Idaho Librul says:

Cheney has always been an iconoclast in the GOP.

I applaud his support of gay marriage in Maryland. Clearly, his stature of influence still matters in the Republican party.

Now, if he could knock some sense into the rest of the GOP and President Obama.

  3. Harry says:

The ‘Big Dick’ is a firm supporter of gay marriage.

  4. Brigadoon says:

Cheney surprises me. He sided with his daughter’s rights over the haters in his own party.

  5. Mets Fan says:

Good for Cheney. Did I just say that? I’m not usually one to give him praise but his support in Maryland is appreciated.

I wonder why he didn’t work his magic on NJ Gov. Christie?

  6. OBAMA'S JANITOR says:

    Wow!

No Cheney (Dead Eye Dick) has actually been spineless in this regard- if he was so supportive why then was he involved w the Bush 2 administration’s support for a constitutional ban on same-sex unions? His daughter was a lesbian @ the time. I don’t think he’s all that supportive as he falls back on the same sex marriage as “a states issue”. Really? You want your own daughter’s marriage to be valid in one state & not another? That’s good enough??
When push came to shove, i.e. elections, Dick did not stand up for her rights. He may be now, but he stood for 8 years with the Worst President Ever, engaging in a ton of human rights crimes, including the Iraq war, gitmo & torture, as well as support for a constitutional ban on same-sex unions. I have no warm fuzzy feeling for Dick Cheney, in fact he & Bush 2 should be in prison.

During an interview with Lynne Cheney,(2000) Cokie Roberts brought up the topic of Mary Cheney’s having declared herself a lesbian. Mrs. Cheney responded by stating that her daughter had “declared no such thing,” and criticized Roberts and the media for their interest in the story.

In 2002, Mary Cheney joined the Republican gay-straight alliance Republican Unity Coalition and said that sexual orientation should be “a non-issue for the Republican Party,” with a goal of “equality for all gay and lesbian Americans.” Cheney resigned from the RUC’s board and in July 2003 became the director of vice presidential operations for the Bush-Cheney 2004 Presidential re-election campaign.
The 2004 presidential election debates included mentions of the same-sex marriage debate and referred, initially indirectly, to Cheney.
During the Cheney-Edwards Vice-Presidential Debate, moderator Gwen Ifill asked a question to the Vice President in which his daughter was indirectly mentioned:
“ I want to read something you said four years ago at this very setting: ‘Freedom means freedom for everybody.’ You said it again recently when you were asked about legalizing same-sex unions. And you used your family’s experience as a context for your remarks. Can you describe then your administration’s support for a constitutional ban on same-sex unions? ”
Dick Cheney reiterated his position of four years prior, stating the issue should be left to the states but that he supports the Bush administration. He did not mention his family nor his daughter in his immediate response to the question. In response, Edwards said:
“ I think the vice president and his wife love their daughter. I think they love her very much. And you can’t have anything but respect for the fact that they’re willing to talk about the fact that they have a gay daughter, the fact that they embrace her. It’s a wonderful thing. And there are millions of parents like that who love their children, who want their children to be happy. ”
Although he was given 90 seconds to respond to Edwards’ comments, Dick Cheney responded succinctly, “Well, Gwen, let me simply thank the senator for the kind words he said about my family and our daughter. I appreciate that very much.” Ms. Ifill followed up: “That’s it?” The vice president replied, “That’s it,” effectively ending the discussion of his daughter’s sexual orientation.

Sorry for the long post, but Dick C is a scumbag.
Beyond his stingy & marginal support for his lesbian daughter’s rights, if you can stand it,
read on to review his resume, if not skip this post.

    • Chairman of Halliburton 1995-2000
    • Got no bid contracts for Halliburton in the GW Bush admin for billions & many violations and infractions for fraud
    • dodged the draft in the Vietnam war applied for FIVE deferments.
    • went on to oversee Desert Storm 1 war, Afghanistan war & Iraq preemptive war
    • He voted against the creation of the U.S. Department of Education, citing his concern over budget deficits and expansion of the federal government, and claiming that the Department was an encroachment on states’ rights. He voted against funding Head Start, but reversed his position in 2000
    • voted against a non-binding Congressional resolution calling on the South African government to release Nelson Mandela from prison, after the Democrats defeated proposed amendments that would have required Mandela to renounce violence sponsored by the African National Congress
    • He also utilized a heavy security detail, employing a motorcade of 12 to 18 government vehicles for his daily commute from the Vice Presidential residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory to the White House.
    • Cheney had closed door energy meetings that resulted in the chemicals used in Fracking be listed as “proprietary”, therefore making them secret & not required to be reported.
So what if drinking water bursts into flames or is too toxic to drink??
    • Cheney responded to a question about public opinion polls showing that Americans had lost confidence in the war by simply replying “So?”
    • Beginning in 2003, Cheney’s staff opted not to file required reports with the National Archives and Records Administration office charged with assuring that the executive branch protects classified information, nor did it allow inspection of its record keeping. (after Enron tanked & they were closely involved).
    • The media questioned whether Cheney had created a “fourth branch of government” that was not subject to any laws.
    • The Plame CIA leak scandal, in which Scooter Libby was the fall guy
    • Cheney reiterated his support of waterboarding and enhanced interrogation techniques for captured terrorist suspects, saying, “I was and remain a strong proponent of our enhanced interrogation program.”
    • Environmental Protection Agency official stated publicly that Cheney’s office had pushed significantly for large-scale deletions from a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report on the health effects of global warming- Cheney had 6 pages deleted from the scientific report.

Finally, he has no heart– literally:

In early July 2010, Cheney was outfitted with a left-ventricular assist device (LVAD) at Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute to compensate for worsening congestive heart failure. The device pumps blood continuously through his body. He was released from Inova on August 9, 2010, and will have to decide whether to seek a full heart transplant. This pump is centrifugal and as a result he is alive without a pulse.

I am no fan of Dick Cheney under ordinary circumstances, but good for him in this instance! Maybe he has redeeming qualities after all!

  10. retahyajyajav says:

Cheney managed to do one thing right in his long, miserable life.
