Military Given Go-Ahead to Detain U.S. Terrorist Suspects without Trial

Worse than George W. Bush?

Barack Obama has abandoned a commitment to veto a new security law that allows the military to indefinitely detain without trial American terrorism suspects arrested on U.S. soil who could then be shipped to Guantánamo Bay.

Human rights groups accused Obama of deserting his principles and disregarding the long-established principle that the military is not used in domestic policing. The legislation has also been strongly criticized by libertarians on the right angered at the stripping of individual rights for the duration of “a war that appears to have no end”.

The law, contained in the $662 billion dollar defense authorization bill that funds the U.S. military effectively extends the battlefield in the “war on terror” to the U.S. and applies the established principle that combatants in any war are subject to military detention.

The draconian legislation’s supporters in Congress say it simply codifies existing practice, such as the indefinite detention of alleged terrorists at Guantánamo Bay. But the law’s critics describe it as a draconian piece of legislation that extends the reach of detention without trial to include U.S. citizens arrested in their own country.

“It’s something so radical that it would have been considered crazy had it been pushed by the Bush administration,” said Tom Malinowski of Human Rights Watch. “It establishes precisely the kind of system that they have consistently urged other countries not to adopt. At a time when the United States is urging Egypt, for example, to scrap its emergency law and military courts, this is not consistent.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California said, “Congress is essentially authorizing the indefinite imprisonment of American citizens, without charge. We are not a nation that locks up its citizens without charge.”

Yes, and ”shit-bag” O-bummer just let it happen………….

  2. feminazi says:

I voted for Obama in 2008. I won’t vote for him in 2012. Before I get accused of supporting Romney or Gingrich, please don’t even think of trying. I would rather stay home on election day than waste my vote on a candidate who thumbs his nose at the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and acts like a banana republic dictator. I thought I knew Obama. I was wrong.

  3. Matteo says:

President Obama had ‘Indefinite Detention’ Inserted into Defense Authorization Bill. This terrible bill isn’t the fault of the Congress. This is Obama’s mores and values.

  4. Joe in Colorado says:

A sad day for America courtesy of Barack Hussein Obama.

  5. Brigadoon says:

The Obama betrayal continues. I’m with feminazi on the 2012 general election. I plan to vote third party or Green next year. I can’t in good conscious vote to reelect Obama. From FISA to refusing to close GITMO to Indefinite Detention. Obama is far scarier than Bush because he governs like some sort of religious Messiah.

  6. TOM339 says:

The U.S. government shouldn’t be allowed to imprison American citizens indefinitely without charge or trial.

It shouldn’t be necessary to reaffirm this guiding principle 800 years after Magna Carta was signed and over 200 years after the Fifth Amendment was ratified into law. Yet, hear we are discussing it and shaking our collective heads in disbelief.

Time to order the Articles of Impeachment? If there was ever a time, it is now.

  7. The Real Adam says:

Lets not forget Obama’s effort to control the Internet.

It wasn’t Clinton or Bush who sought a so-called “shut off” switch to close down the servers rendering your computer a useless box and screen adorning your desk at home. It was none other than Barack Obama. He is terrified of freedom. Maybe it’s time for an American Spring?

  8. One Fly says:

When he comes across and sells his ass as one of us – then he’s worse than the bush killers.

  9. VicoDANIEL says:

This closes the deal for me. Nobama in 2012.

If you use a camera phone to monitor the actions of cops, you can be a terrorist. If you have a Ron Paul 2012 sticker on your car you are a terrorist. If you have scars or are missing a finger you are considered a terrorist. If you post a comment on the internet critical of Obama you are a terrorist.

Freedom Watch said to expect people to start disappearing off the streets in cities and towns across America. Nobama doesn’t deserve a second term: he should be impeached.

  10. Estacada says:

I’ve never understood how Obama’s supporters think because he was a constitutional law professor that it somehow inoculates him from abuse of power?

If anything, I think it makes more dangerous.

  11. Rachel says:

Obama is a power-hungry, ego maniacal shithead who belongs in GITMO. I find it extremely telling that the mainstream print papers are doing their utmost best to NOT report this, focusing instead on the end of the Iraq war. What are they afraid of? Life in prison without the possibility of parole?

  12. DMason says:

Obama wanted the Defense Authorization Bill to contain a provision to detain US citizens indefinitely without charges or a trial. Now, the Congress working to censor the internet. Shouldn’t we be in full revolution mode right now? In 2011, the USA has much more in common with Syria or Uzbekistan than Britain or France. I know Americans are sheeple but seriously, if the overreach of the Federal government doesn’t stop, we will look back at the early 21st century as the glory years.

  13. Stephen Iversonn says:

A sad day for America indeed.

Today a series of reports came out showing 1-in-2 Americans is low-income or poor. This was followed by a report that says 50% of U.S. schools fail to meet government standards. But Obama’s main concern is having the legal authority to sic the military on American citizens and lock them up, never to be seen again?

I swear. This president is skating on very thin ice. He’s opening himself up to serious legal problems in the months and years to come.

  14. Eric Equality Kuntz says:

I just walked in, turned on the TV and read this blog entry.

You’re correct, as usual. No news coverage whatsoever about Obama adding this terrible provision to the bill and the grave threat to the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights it poses.

Is the corporate-owned US media really so afraid of losing access to the White House press room?

  15. Revolutionary Soldier says:

    RON PAUL 2012

  16. Seabec says:

Obama is a tyrant. We need to focus on 2016. I think 2012 is a lost cause.

  17. Sayingwhatneedsaying says:

We’re now living in a POLICE STATE…… FUCKING OBAMA should die before he signs this!

  18. Sayingwhatneedsaying says:

Does anyone know what happened to the CONSTITUTION we used to have??????

  19. Randy Arroyo says:

So the American people are now President Obama’s sworn enemy? Really, it has come to this?

  20. RealityZone says:

    Feinstein should be held accountable.
As did many other so called “dems”.

  21. One Fly says:

Both mine did and Udal and I believe Feinstien have a bill that is supposed to correct that. Fuck’em both and the lame dick horse they rode in on. Haven’t heard squat from our other sick fuck Senawhore.
