Obama’s Green Initiative Snatches Inhalers Out of Asthmatics’ Hands

Friday, September 23, 2011

If you’re one of the 20 million Americans who suffer from asthma (1 in 15 Americans), the Obama administration has come up with a new way to make your life a living and potentially lethal hell.

The Food and Drug Administration announced on Thursday that by Dec. 31, all over-the-counter asthma inhalers will be illegal because of their CFC content. Asthma patients will instead need to use prescription albuterol inhalers, which use ozone-friendly hydrofluoroalkane as their propellant, but also aren’t covered by many health plans and can cost up to three times the price.

Asthma accounts for one-quarter of all emergency room visits in the U.S. each year, with 2 million emergency room visits. Each day 11 Americans die from asthma. There are more than 4,000 deaths due to asthma each year, many of which are avoidable with proper treatment like over-the-counter asthma inhalers.

With one in six Americans under 64 without health insurance and prescription drug coverage or roughly 48 million Americans, over-the-counter asthma inhalers are the only way to avoid a costly trip to the emergency room and possibly death. The Nitwit in the White House failed to take this into account before he willy-nilly elevated his green initiative above the lives of the 20 Americans living with asthma.

Can the 2012 election get here any sooner?

  1. Joe in Colorado says:

Obama is such an idiot. It’s doubly ironic considering how many more African Americans suffer from asthma than whites. This decision is an attack on people of color. Obama should get a swift kick in his scrawny ass.

  2. mdmbl says:

I hope Obama’s FDA is hit with a lawsuit over this.

  3. Marcus Ybanez says:

    So let’s see.

In President Obama’s world industrial polluters, oil refining polluters and coal polluters are perfectly fine but uninsured people who use a lifesaving, OTC inhaler should just be allowed to die? Obama’s obsession with green initiatives represent a public health threat and needs to be stopped ASAP.

  4. Bob says:

Why does this surprise anyone. Obama’s ideology reigns supreme over everything else. I could have told you this before you voted for him in 2008. It is more of the liberal fallacy. Look at the “war on poverty”. It has not worked. Or maybe it has, if you understand that the underlying purpose of it is to supply a stream of Democrat voters who are dependent on the government.

  5. For the uninsured, banning over-the-counter asthma inhalers will be an enormous financial hardship.

    Consider:

    Drugstore.com email inhaler price $21.99
    Primatene Asthma Mist Inhaler w/Mouthpiece
    http://www.drugstore.com/primatene-asthma-mist-inhaler-wmouthpiece/qxp208248?catid=97976&fromsrch=asthma+inhaler

    Versus Doctor office visit: $180
    Albuterol inhalers prescription cost: $60
    Total: $240

This assumes no emergency room visit to a hospital is required, then all bets are off.

President Obama is Big Pharma’s BFF but, to the American people, a complete imbecile.

  6. Harry says:

Christopher is correct. This ruling by King Barry will lead to more deaths from asthma. Can we all agree now that Obama doesn’t give a shit about us?

  7. Bill Hussein O'Reilly says:

BIG PHARMA TO THE WHITE HOUSE: Barry, get over here, we need a blow job
THE WHITE HOUSE: Yes, Massa I’m on my way

  8. Sayingwhatneedsaying says:

My wish for you Mr. O’blow-job…. is that both of your children develop breathing problems…. Yeah, payback can be a bitch…….

  9. TOM339 says:

This is yet another attack by President Obama on the poor.

When the Obama White House was formulating the national healthcare legislation that consumed all of 2009, more than 200 CEOs from the insurance industry and Big Pharma attended closed door meetings with Obama and his team, the minutes of which were never released despite FOIA requests to see what was said and promised

Now we know. By banning OTC asthma inhalers, the poor and uninsured will be forced to pay a disproportionate amount of their income to the pharmaceutical industry to obtain their asthma meds.

  10. Carpe Diem says:

Trees before people. No wonder people hate environmentalists.

  11. Rachel says:

So we’re now to believe a tiny albuterol inhaler is destroying the ozone layer but billions of tons of airborne filth from coal stacks (a common sight in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania) aren’t having a deleterious effect on the ozone layer? This just makes no sense. I think TOM339 hit the nail on the proverbial head. Banning OTC inhalers is Obama’s early Christmas present to his pals at Pfizer and Merck. I hope the lawsuit targeting the FDA includes members of the administration. Keep Eric Holder busy.

  12. DMason says:

Everyone wants to protect the ozone layer to ward off harmful ultra violet rays that heat the earth. But you must weigh public policy against the good of the people you are trying to protect. Taking over the counter inhalers out of the hands of people with asthma is just plain crazy and suggests as others have said that Obama is doing this not to protect the earth but, to line the coffers of Big Pharma. He should be ashamed of himself.

  13. Vivzz says:

    Mr. Obama is a fool.

  14. Robyn says:

What a jackass. I have two family members with asthma and they can’t afford these “green” inhalers.

  15. All of you need to read the AP report. The FDA finalized plans to phase out the inhalers in 2008. In other words, when Bush was still in office and Obama had not yet been sworn in. Tell me how this makes it the Obama administration’s fault.

And from the FDA’s press release”
“The FDA began public discussions about the use of CFCs in epinephrine inhalers in January 2006. The FDA finalized the phase-out date for using CFCs in these inhalers and notified the public in November 2008. Many manufacturers have changed their inhalers to replace CFCs with an environmentally-friendly propellant called hydrofluoroalkane (HFA).”

Not only that, but the US has been committed to reducing CFCs since we signed the Montreal Protocol, an international agreement in 1987, under President Ronald Reagan.

Please research more thoroughly before bashing President Obama for something else that happened BEFORE he even took office.

  16. feminazi says:

Theresa – Your ardent support of Obama is appreciated. He has few left such as yourself. However, a link to a support piece of information is what sets apart “she said” versus fact. So the fact remains under Obama’s FDA, OTC asthma inhalers will be phased out by end of this year leaving millions of uninsured Americans with no choice but to incur an expensive prescription charge.

  17. The Real Adam says:

Obama’s HHS and FDA can stop this if, they give the order too.

But my guess is, Obama — with his “green is the color of the future” mentality will just hang asthma patients with no insurance out to dry.

  18. Matteo says:

A cautionary tale for asthma sufferers.

Why Environmentally Friendly Products Are Almost Always Worse
    http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2009/04/why-dont-we-have-more-green-products/7283/

  19. Jim says:

Completely ridiculous! Why not focus on something that would truly HELP people?

  20. While I am allergic to the OTC inhalers, my cousin is allergic to the prescription inhalers’ propellant. She can’t take aNY of them, not albuterol, not Xopanex, not the inhaled steroids, not atrovent, nothing like that, because of the propellant. She has to use nebulizer treatments for those meds if she’s to take them — and the neb meds are even MORE expensive than the inhalers. LUCKilY places like Walmart, Walgreens and CVS offer generic prescription discount programs were a 30 day prescription is only $4, no matter how much any other store sells it for. Yes, uninsured/underinsured people will still have to pay for the doctor/ER visit, but at least the script will be a little cheaper if you go to these places. I’m surprised some of you didn’t know about that.

  21. Joe Jared says:

Logically, if aerosol is so bad for the environment, and North America was the primary source, why is the hole in the ozone in the Antarctic? Could our science be wrong, as wrong as it is about Global warming? Has anyone noticed that life expectancy is increasing as well as the rate of plant growth? Do we blindly listen to scientists without question, simply because they are scientists and know everything?

This has nothing to the environment. It has to do with a pharmaceutical company lining obama’s pockets to take away one low cost of treatment. Between this and his recent attempt to take over the internet (See FCC + internet +obama ) Obama is showing his true character, which has nothing to do with skin color. The problem with attacks against this loser president is that people will always discount them because he is black. So is my step-father, who’s been married to my mother for nearly 30 years, the best man she’s ever married. My grandfather had asthma through much of his adult life. I had asthma as an infant to the point that I needed to be in an oxygen tent. I still have some symptoms, but more importantly, I will be a father in February.

I don’t want Obama removed from office because he’s black. I want him removed because he’s a greedy a**hat. He will sacrifice our economy over ironically, his Obama Care plan. He will sacrifice our children over some private back room deal. He will sacrifice our people over wars we don’t belong in. The crusades ended centuries ago, and here we go again, fighting a religious war. We wonder where terrorism comes from, and sometimes, what motivates an American terrorist. Perhaps, if we’d take a moment as a people and realise when the government messes with the lives of families, without hope, even the most sane of individual will go mad, and do the unthinkable.

I’m voting for the real person to consider our health needs, Dr. Ron Paul. In the mean time, please, write your congressmen. Do anything to stop this corrupt ban.

  22. Dr. JW says:

No, he’s no nitwit…this is intended to drive people to accept Obamacare and socialized medicine! Thirty million illegal aliens can go to ER anytime they like for no charge, but not little American children who can’t breathe–or vote!

  23. troy says:

i am one of those 20 mil americans. I have used otc inhalers since i was 18 and have never had a problem. matter of fact as a kid they (docs) made me use the albuterals. i still was going to th er at least 4 times a year. since using the otc inhalers, I have not been to the er for an asthma attack. Thanks bamy for making my life a living suffocating he11.

  24. troy says:

theresa the point is obamy can issue an executive order preventing or removing the inhalers from the list of banned products. he has not and will not because he does not care. You are a fool for defending a commie socialist pig that is he11 bent on transforming america into what he thinks it should be rather than following the Constitution.

  25. Silas Lemke says:

I am continually amazed at the racist, bulls@#t people pawn off as as righteous indignation at the sitting President. Bush anal raped you people with a sandpaper condom but its Ok because he was white right? This woman spelled it out to you plain and bloody simple “The white dude did it!” But that’s just not going to be good enough is it. He has the power to repeal it”. I am sure he would if along with the 9 million other things he has to take care of if he knew about it. I so prefer the KKK to you people at least they are honest..

  26. darlene recabarren says:

I need an inhaller yesterday went to get one and learned about the ban. Four months to late. Who said the public was informed lied nobody I know knew about it

  27. Lars David says:

While not a fan of this happening in the least, this was done due to a treaty signed BY REAGAN, NOT OBAMA. Someone discovered the amount of chloro-fluorocarbons being output by the inhaler in proportion to actual product, and it exceeds the limit. This would most likely occurred no matter who was in office. But thanks for going out of your was to blame the current administration… when it was Saint Reagan who signed the law. Just like ObamaCare being a REPUBLICAN idea since the 70s (Nixon and his mandate and gov assistance for those who couldn’t afford it) through the 80s and 90s (Newt Gingrich pushing it in the 90s) to the 00s (Mitt implementing it in Massachusetts and saying it was a perfect models for the whole country -NOTE he said whole country, not each state) to the 10s when members of the GOP jockeyed for it instead of single payer then voted against their own idea. I’m SICK of this team mentality in government. If the right is for it, most of the left is against it… but if the left is for it, even when started by the right or even if it’s the right’s own idea, then the right is ALL against it. America’s well being isn’t a team sport, but you wouldn’t know that by looking at our government, or our bloggers. It’s one way only, and it’s against what the other is for… not for any thing, just against. Pathetic, limited memory, good for me not the country idiots.

  28. chris belger says:

if i can’t breathe how am i going to pay your taxes. what happens if i can’t breath? would you give a damn about at that time and watch me suffer. if you did you would put the inhaler back on the market. what happen if you got a attack? maybe you would know how it felt that you were dying at the time.
