According to a Wikileaks diplomatic cable, as recently as 2009, Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain promised to help Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi obtain U.S. military hardware. Not exactly what I would call sound judgement from the Old Coot.
Here is the actual Wikileaks diplomatic cable:
Cable 09TRIPOLI677, CODEL MCCAIN MEETS MUAMMAR AND MUATASSIM AL-QADHAFI
5.(C) Senator McCain assured Muatassim that the United States wanted to provide Libya with the equipment it needs for its TRIPOLI 00000677 002.2 OF 002 security. He stated that he understood Libya's requests regarding the rehabilitation of its eight C130s (ref D) and pledged to see what he could do to move things forward in Congress. He encouraged Muatassim to keep in mind the long-term perspective of bilateral security engagement and to remember that small obstacles will emerge from time to time that can be overcome. He described the bilateral military relationship as strong and pointed to Libyan officer training at U.S. Command, Staff, and War colleges as some of the best programs for Libyan military participation.
What the hell was McCain thinking? Can you imagine if he had been elected president?
And people thought he was presidential material? Good God no.
Has anyone ever explained this picture of the Old Coot?
It looks like an alien lizard creature is trying to escape from him. One of the funniest and most disturbing images I’ve ever seen.
If memory serves (and it usually does), 2009 was the height of the US recession. Why was John McCain, a six-term member of Congress, in Libya, discussing arms with a dictator instead of being back in Washington, working on ways to end the recession and create jobs? It seems to me his priorities are truly anti-American. But hey, he’s from Arizona and apparently, they adore the man so what do I know?
I read the wiki document and just for the record, McCain’s BFF Joe Lieberman accompanied him on this trip to Tripoli. What I would like to know is, why are sitting members of the U.S. Senate spending my tax dollars to meet dictators and promise them militaria?
Surely, this use and waste of money should be of interest to the Tea Party?
This is no surprise at all. Throughout his career, MCCoot has been in the pocket of someone. Figure out which arms manufacturer was paying him off, and you’ll figure out what he was doing in Libya.
