Glenn Greenwald: Obama ‘eviscerates of the rule of law for political elites’

Friday, August 26, 2011

With the recent rash of DNC operatives fanning out across the blogosphere to defend President Obama in the lead-up to the 2012 general election, Salon.com columnist Glenn Greenwald on Thursday offered up a welcome dose of reality, blasting President Obama’s mantra that the nation should “look forward, not backward” regarding alleged crimes committed by the Bush administration.

Appearing on MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell Greenwald said:

“Imagine if, for example, we decided to announce tomorrow that we were no longer going to prosecute murder or rape or child abductions because we didn’t want to ‘keep looking backwards. What do you think would happen? Obviously there would be a lot more people engaging in murder, rape, and child abduction.”

Greenwald said the American political culture had “decided our highest political officials are free to break the law without consequences” and Obama had continued the “evisceration of the rule of law for political elites.”

“So political elites like Dick Cheney know that they can commit crimes with total impunity, and that is why he goes around proudly boasting about the crimes he has committed.”

Still think President Barack Obama deserves a second term?

  1. Joe in Colorado says:

Whatever you think of President Obama, he’s part of the club now and his decisions are no longer based on what is best for the U.S. and the American people. He has an obligation to protect those who came before him and whoever replaces him in 2012 will do likewise. The presidential club is about survival and CYA. Justice is just a quaint concept better left to Hollywood screenwriters.

  2. Robyn says:

Hell no. He gave those bastards a free pass. I won’t.

  3. Brigadoon says:

With Dick Cheney’s book about to hit the bookstores, and the tenth anniversary of 9/11 just around the corner, the Bush administration is having a Renaissance. You can’t get away from these cretins. But the good news is, Obama’s role in actively protecting these hooligans can’t be avoided either.

  4. Estacada says:

The rule of law? What’s that? Obama is greasing the wheels so that he can’t be held culpable and accountable for Libya.

Everyone remembers Libya, right? The latest U.S. war only this time, our president failed to get congressional approval for the bombing and best of all, Obama gave the order whilst out of the country on a trip to Brazil.

  5. World of Wonder says:

Why is anyone surprised by this? Obama and Cheney are cousins after all.

  6. The Real Adam says:

Mark my words, when Cheney goes out on the circuit to promote his book, the media will accord him with all the respect of a senior statesman.

They did the very same thing when Henry Kissinger penned his book and went out to promote it. The corporate media are fools but the American people are bigger fools for electing the same soulless, immoral criminals who do their very best to destroy the US Constitution and the rule of law.

  7. Rachel says:

The eyes of the world — especially the Arab world, looked upon the United States in shock and disappointment when the crimes of the Bush administration went unprosecuted. I have to laugh everytime I hear an American president, be it Bush or Obama, say “We’re not at war with Islam.” Seriously? Just tell the truth: we want your oil and nothing is going to stop us.

  8. JollyRoger says:

The truth about Bushack HW Obama is a bitter pill to swallow, so the Obambies wash it down with DNC-flavored Kool-Aid.

Matters not. Bushack HW Obama IS the 3rd term of Chimpy.

  9. Marcus Ybanez says:

My father said the presidency is the world’s ultimate gentlemens club. You might enter it poor and moral but, you will leave it wealthy and crooked. My father was correct.

    Just look at Obama.

  10. Debbie Banuelos says:

Still think President Barack Obama deserves a second term?

I didn’t think he deserved a first term.

  11. JollyRoger says:

Debbie, you were right. I was right, initially. I bought into the HOPE, which was HYPE.

  12. Fran says:

This is how people become so disgusted w politics.
I never wanted to be in the “I’m not voting” camp…
but we vote, knowing the electoral college or the Supreme court will have the final say.
We seem to be hopelessly stuck in the failed two party system.
How many voters feel like you have to vote w/i that system or voting for a 3 rd party candidate simply helps the candidate you think would do the most harm?

I have a long list of serious issues w Obama, but do I think Rick Perry or Mitt Romney would be better?

    Hell no.
