Overwhelming Majority of Americans Believe in God

Sunday, June 5, 2011

Sunday. A time for football (seasonally adjusted), pot roast, shopping at the mall and a visit to church to praise the Baby Jesus.

A new Gallup poll finds an staggering 92% of Americans still say “yes” when asked the basic question “Do you believe in God?”

This number is down only slightly from the 1940s, when Gallup first asked the poll question.

In bad times, like those currently underway in America, people are looking for guidance and this means they go to church more.

Look at prosperous European nations like Norway. On Sunday, they go for drives in the country, play in city parks and enjoy family time. Norwegians aren’t praying to “God” for a job, or for peace, or for the winning lottery numbers.

  2. Brigadoon says:

I was at Olive Garden last week and saw the Flying Spaghetti Monster on a plate a few table over from us. Man, his he look good. Big, and healthy, and strong. He seems to be doing very well these days. 😉

Saaaaaaaaaaay, at one time the overwhelming majority thought the World was flat too! They were wrong too!

  4. libhomo says:

This is a terrible indictment of our educational system.

  5. Robert says:

    Of course god exists.

  6. Robert,

I respect others points of view. I just happen to disagree and believe “God” was invented by humans who are afraid of death. Death is the great unknown and most people are understandably freaked out by the though of it (me too.)

“God” allows them to reconcile the fact we’re all headed to the ultimate end of the ride.

  7. Wilde says:

Chris. I accept your disagreement in that there is a God. It is a faith you have, and I truly believe that all people have faith. One cannot know for sure. We don’t have the technology to check the whole universe, space and time.
