Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards was indicted by a Grand Jury this morning on criminal charges that he broke campaign finance laws to cover up his extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter.
I reported Edwards would be indicted as early as June back on May 25th.
The indictment was handed down by a Federal Grand Jury in Raleigh, NC and says Edwards faces charges on six counts. A warrant has been issued for Edwards’ arrest.
At issue is hundreds of thousands of dollars given to Hunter and Andrew Young by Edwards’ supporters, Rachel “Bunny” Mellon and Fred Baron, to keep the pair in hiding. Prosecutors argue that the money amounted to illegal campaign contributions because they allowed Edwards to continue with his 2008 presidential bid.
The chapter is a sad end to a once promising political career. Edwards was said to be on then-Sen. Barack Obama’s shortlist for vice president after Obama won the 2008 Democratic primary.
