Japan: Ancient Festival Worships the Penis

Sunday, April 17, 2011

Leave it to Japan, the country that gave us Hello Kitty, Ramen noodles and anime, to also give us the ancient festival called “Kanamara Matsuri” which celebrates and worships a huge phallus whose origins date back to the Edo (1603-1867).

In the city of Kawasaki, Japan, the festival of “Kanamara Matsuri” is very special. It is the starting point for prevention campaigns and fundraising.

The event attracts a lots of people: young, old and children who gather in the square around the giant phallus. The crowded streets are surrounded by stalls selling all kinds of items, sweets and groceries in phallic form.

There is also plenty of transvestites, gays and lesbians participating with great fun. Here you will find penis-shaped daikon and carrots, which are then auctioned during the festival.

Who doesn’t appreciate a huge phallus? I love Japan!

I love Japan, too. They have the most unique cultural sensibility of any country in the world. Plus, I love their food. Most of their food anyway. Sushi? Not so much but the rest of it is amazing. Especially the noodles.

    An instant classic!

    Some folks don’t like them.

Once upon a time, I was going to do my son’s laundry., In the back pocket of his pants was a note. The writer of the note was expressing her fear that he would do her some serious damage if they, uh…. you know.

I shit you not. And you should have seen his face when I brought it up-later that evening, with his stepmother (who basically raised him) sitting there.

Japan is awesome. Even with the nuclear plant doing what it’s doing the Japanese are still conducting their celebrations as if nothing’s going on.

I love the ‘Da Da’ aspect of Japanese culture.

Japan is one of those unique places I’ve always wanted to visit. I think I would have a ball in Japan.

  6. Jolly Roger,

If your son is of legal age, send him to me. I like that kind of “serious damage.” 😉
