Former U.S. congressman Bob Barr, is advising Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier how to unlock frozen funds in Swiss banks after Duvalier fled to France amid a 1986 rebellion.
Baby Doc Duvalier “is very interested in trying to get those funds freed up, not for himself, but so they can be used to help the situation in Haiti,” Barr said by phone from Port-au-Prince yesterday. Barr is a Republican who served in Congress from 1995-2003 and ran for president on the Libertarian ticket in 2008.
Barr accompanied Baby Dock Duvalier on Jan. 21, as the former dictator made his first public comments since his Jan. 16 return to his earthquake ravaged homeland after 25-years in exile. Also accompanying Duvalier were two other American lawyers, Ed Marger of Jasper, GA, and Mike Puglise of Snellville, GA, according to a statement issued by Barr’s office.
The 59-year-old Duvalier apologized to victims of human rights abuses during his 15-year reign of terror. Appointed president of Haiti for life by father, the dictator Francois Duvalier, also known as “Papa Doc.” According to Human Rights Watch, the Duvaliers murdered between 20,000 to 30,000 Haitians, many at the hands of the brutal Tonton Macoutes secret police,
It is unclear why former U.S. congressman Bob Barr would be interested in assisting a monstrous individual like Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier but, his actions certainly warrant an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.
