Conan O’Brien Refused to Book Sarah Palin

Monday, November 22, 2010

Everyone knows Conan O’Brien enjoyed a contentious relationship with NBC. Conan stood up to NBC in a number of ways during his stint at the Tonight Show. But one of the more interesting examples centered around Team Coco ignoring suggestions from the network on how to boost his ratings: book Sarah Palin as a guest.

Mama Grifter was never booked on Conan’s Tonight Show, says NY Times reporter Bill Carter in a chat with PopEater, as O’Brien blocked the move. Palin had become a champion among extremist conservatives but is generally considered a patently offensive pariah by both liberals and moderates.

Suffice to say Palin will never be a guest on Conan O’Brien’s new show which airs on TBS at 11PM M-F because Conan enjoys even more control over this new show than he ever did at NBC. Interestingly, after NBC ran Conan out of town and suck-up Jay Leno was given back the Tonight Show, Leno immediately booked Mama Grifter as a guest during his first-week despite claims on Leno’s part that his show is apolitical.

  1. Mets Fan says:

Conan rocks. I watch his new show every night before I go to bed.

Leno is a nauseating sycophant and not remotely funny. I am not surprised Leno would do as told and book the bitch from Wasilla.

  2. Jolly Roger says:

Leno also lacks talent. His show is like letting your annoying cousin in the house, while you were wishing Uncle Johnny was still around.

  3. feminazi says:

I can’t imagine why people are interested in Sarah Palin? She isn’t smart, nor is she an accomplished public servant. Conan O’Brien was very brave to stand up to the GE bully boys who run NBC. Jay Leno is about as opposite from Johnny Carson as you can go and still remain in the human genome. Why does he have a talkshow?

  4. Tiny Dancer says:

    I’m with Coco, too!

  5. Vivzzz says:

I would rather see a rotting, decaying corpse on late night than Palin. In fact, whenever I see her, I just turn the channel. My home is a “NO PALIN ZONE.” She’s a loathsome hag.

  6. TOM339 says:

NBC is owned by General Electric.
General Electric is a player in the military, industrial complex.
NBC is about to be sold to Comcast — another rightwing company.

No wonder they pushed Conan to book Palin. The far right wants her in the White House as soon as possible.

  7. Brigadoon says:

I’ve been a Conan fan for years and this just makes me like him more. It took a lot of cajones for him to oppose the NBC machine but he did it. Good on Conan! BTW, his new TBS show is very funny.

  8. Idaho Librul says:

NBC is so f**ked up! They’re taking off The Event for 3 months and not bringing it back until March, 2011.

Do they really thing people will even care next year, let alone, remember the series?

This is the new trend in network TV. They take these 3 and 4 month breaks and then they wonder why no one watches the series when it returns. I’ve said for many years the entire model for network TV is broken. So few people bother to tune in to watch their product now compared to 20 or 25 years ago.

Some of it is cable and more choices but, that isn’t the whole problem.

  9. DMason says:

I have a question? Where does the name “Team Coco” come from? Is it related to the color of Conan’s red hair? I never understood this.

  10. Harry says:

David – Tom Hanks coined Team Coco. Tom Hanks was on Conan’s program the first week he was on TBS and Conan teased him about saddling him with the name.

  11. okjimm says:

I have never been a Conan fan. There is something about him I really don’t care for………..But I am tipping my hat to him~!!!!!!

  12. Rachel says:

Conan is definitely an acquired taste. His old late night show on NBC was a riot but as his time slot gets earlier and earlier, he’s gotten more tame I think to satisfy the censors. I mean the masturbating bear had me falling out of my chair! But refusing to book Palin is just a thing of pure joy.

  13. ottoline says:

You did the right thing, Conan. Thank you.

  14. kellyofsiam says:

It took me some time to enjoy O’Brien…don’t know why, it just did. Good for him to stand up to rightwing NBC. Leno could only wish to have small part of O’Brien’s talent.
