Mysterious ‘Time Traveler’ Spotted in 1928 Charlie Chaplin Film

Thursday, October 28, 2010

This is curious. A 1928 B&W film clip from a Charlie Chaplin movie premier appears to show a woman talking on a cell phone is sparking debate and controversy.

The short film, some 80 years old, is footage that was shot for Charlie Chaplin’s film “The Circus.” The film shows people attending the 1928 premiere of the movie at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

In the footage, a woman dressed in black with a hat hiding most of her face is seen with what can only be described as a mobile phone device, talking as she walks alone.

To VIEW the video, please go to the bottom of the article.

The footage was studied and posted on YouTube by a man in Belfast named George Clarke. Clarke believes the woman could be a time-traveler who is using technology 81 years in the future. Others say she is using a 1920’s era hearing aide.

  1. Sean says:

    Very interesting.

  2. DMason says:

I love stuff like this. I watched the video a couple of times. The woman is clearly holding something up to her ear and she appears to be speaking into it. I hope they blow the frames up more to analyze the footage.

  3. Brigadoon says:

That’s freaky. It really looks like the old girl on talking on her cell phone. But they didn’t have cell towers in 1928. As far as we know. Maybe she’s an alien and she is talking to the mothership?

  4. Smooch says:

The aliens are among us hiding in plain sight.

  5. Walk on Socks says:

    She’s either:

1.) an alien talking to other aliens on their cell technology or,

2.) a kook, talking into a lint brush

Either way, it’s a totally bizarre image and great fun to speculate about.

  6. Rachel says:

Could it be the ancient, former First Lady Barbara Bush? I am convinced she was alive during the reign of ancient Rome. She’s immortal and will be roaming the earth long after the rest of us have passed on.

  7. Estacada says:

    This video is a hoot!

Rachel — You’re too funny! The timeless Babs Bush!

I have never seen anything like this before. 1928 was a long time ago. The image doesn’t square with the year.

  8. dunno says:

How does a mobile phone work in 1928?

  9. mauigirl says:

I thought this was cool too. Of course I had to relate it to Star Trek – it’s a communicator, and she’s a starship crew person in disguise!

  10. Conejo1982 says:

I like the Star Trek analogy too.

It’s like the episode in “Star Trek: the Next Generation” when members of the crew were observing a civilization about to develop Warp drive and they were outed and how it violated the prime directive. Way cool!

  11. Randy Arroyo says:

Very, very strange. I don’t have a clue what she’s holding to her head.

  12. Scott Dancer says:

We should less linear in our thinking.

If this life form possesses the technology to travel to earth from another planet, why would they need a crude cell tower to communicate to their race?

The industrialized earth hadn’t developed nuclear technology in 1928, or the jet engine. If this video is indeed an alien visitor, then they’re more advanced than earth was at that time.

  13. sweetie says:

Shes holding an early hearing aid called an ear trumpet, maybe she’s smiling and looking like she is in conversation because she’s just overheard a funny comment, especially as she’s at charlie chaplins circus!!!

  14. bradfrmphnx says:

Some of these early hearing aids look like what she’s holding. One in particular, the French Model (a hearing aid designed to look like a camera because apparantly it wasn’t cool to be deaf in the 1920’s) looks almost exactly like what she is holding. My consensus is that just about the only thing it could have been is a hearing aid…unless of course she IS a time traveler. Wouldn’t want to spoil the fun.🙂

  15. karmanot says:

Can you imagine talking to yourself into an ear trumpet?

  16. scroggins says:

The laws of physics have not yet ruled out the possibility of time travel. However, if the being from the future actually possessed the technological capacity to travel through time, why would she be using a circa 2010 style cell phone?

I don’t know what she’s doing, but it’s clearly something ordinary.

  17. Joe in Colorado says:

Isn’t it Quantum physics that argues time travel is possible? If this is correct, then why couldn’t this be a time traveler? Or in fact, an alien visiting earth to see how we live and what we’re up to? Shot, maybe we’re her college thesis subject?

  18. Brigadoon says:

Extraterrestrial or human, what amazes me is, how can she wear those heavy clothes in Los Angeles? LA rarely — if ever is cold enough to put on a jacket. She looks like she’s in Chicago!

  19. dog says:

Her hearing aid is acting up, and she is testing it, trying to get it to work. A friend of mine who reads lips studied it frame by frame, and said she is clearly saying: “Testing, testing, 1-2-3. I hate this G#d damned thing!”
