Gay Saudi Diplomat Seeks Asylum in the U.S. to Escape Death from Radical Islam

Sunday, September 12, 2010

Ah, those peace- loving, inclusive Muslims. If only this applied to gays and lesbians.

Ali Ahmad Asseri, the first secretary of the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles, has asked for political asylum in the United States, saying he fears he will be killed “in broad daylight” if he is forced to return to his native country.

Saudi Arabia practices one of the most radical forms of Islam known as Sharia Law.

Diplomat Asseri informed U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials that Saudi officials have refused to renew his diplomatic passport and effectively terminated his job after discovering he was gay and was close friends with a Jewish woman.

In a recent letter posted on a Saudi website, Mr. Asseri angrily criticized his country’s “backwardness” as well as the role of “militant imams” in Saudi society who have “defaced the tolerance of Islam.” Perhaps most provocative of all, he has threatened to expose what he describes as politically embarrassing information about members of the Saudi royal family living in luxury in the U.S.

If he is forced to go back to Saudi Arabia, as Saudi officials have demanded, Asseri says he could face political persecution and even death.

“My life is in a great danger here and if I go back to Saudi Arabia, they will kill me openly in broad daylight,” Asseri said Saturday in an email to NBC.

In a recent phone interview, Mr. Asseri said his problems began months ago when Saudi consulate employees who suspected he was gay began following him to gay bars. It was then they also discovered his close friendship with a Jewish woman from Israel. It was some time after these discoveries, Asseri said, that consulate officials began harassing him, refusing to renew his diplomatic passport or provide him with badly needed medical treatment for a painful back ailment. They also continued to monitor his private life and have demanded that he return to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has been sharply condemned by the U.S. State Department and human rights groups for religious and political intolerance, including the treatment of gay people. The most recent State Department human rights report on Saudi Arabia notes that, in addition to denying political and religious rights to minorities, “under Sharia (Islamic law) sexual activity between two persons of the same gender is punishable by death or flogging.” While the report stated there was no “official discrimination” on the basis of sexual orientation in employment and housing, “sexual orientation could constitute the basis for harassment, blackmail, or other actions.” It noted that in one case reported in a Saudi newspaper three years ago, two men in the Saudi city of Al-Bahah were publicly lashed 7,000 times after being found guilty of sodomy.

I simply can’t understand why so many dewy-eyed American liberals refuse to accept the realities of radical Islam as it applies to gays and lesbians, as they try to equivocate Islam with Christianity. I would hate to think American liberals see less value in the lives of gay and lesbian Muslims?

Christopher – How many times have you argued with a well-meaning “friend” who happens to be straight and liberal about marriage equality? Very often, the very people who oppose gay marriage are liberal Democrats! Very often, our “friends” are really our enemies.

  2. Tiny Dancer says:

Throughout the Muslim world, gays have been shot, hanged, poisoned, stoned to death, burned alive, had their anuses sewn closed, their bodies burned with acid, their homes ransacked, fired from jobs, and sent to prison.

Their crime? They violated Islamic law. And no, these gruesome examples weren’t taken from 1010, they took place in 2010.

  3. Estacada says:

The silliest of all the “I love Islam” memes from the left is the one that goes, “the problem isn’t Islam, it’s the people who practice Islam.”

You just want to scream at them, this is precisely the point! If no one practiced the religion, the religion would cease to exist. Sharia Law is a reflection of the people who embrace it.

The issue isn’t helped when Obama is trying to speak without the teleprompter and he’s crying into the microphone about how “we’re not at war with Islam and we never will be.” So, is he saying he agrees with the way Islam treats gay people?

  4. Abbey Peripatetic says:

Tiny Dancer – OMG! That list is just nausea-inducing!

I’ve read articles about the horrendous treatment gays get in the Arab world and it really makes my blood boil. I think the US’s tolerance for these human rights abuses are directly linked to the Arab world having oil and the US is addicted to oil like an addict to crack.

Hillary Clinton must use her voice to speak out against these abuses. President Obama could too but he’s not be the most courageous occupant we’ve had in the White House.

  5. Peace Nick says:

It’s the difference between living in a theocracy and a democratic republic.

Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan are theocracies. The USA is a democratic republic. The religious right in the USA wants to blur the line and make us more like the Muslim world. This is why we must be vigilante and push back hard against them their agenda.

  6. Vivzzz says:

Blame the parochial structure of 99% of organized religions which is based on the male paradigm for the reason they are inherently hostile to sexual minorities. Religion is hostile to women and many ethnic minorities as well. It proves organized religion has nothing to do with spirituality.

  7. Seabec says:

The Obama administration just signed a $60 billion dollar arms deal with the murderous, homophobic Saudis. I guess he approves of Sharia Law and the way it treats gays.

Our very own Martyr in Chief.

  8. Matteo says:

Hi Seabec. I found this article on Yahoo. What’s appalling to me is, the Obama administration didn’t make the deal contingent on human rights issues, i.e., the kingdom’s treatment of gays.

In the largest US arms deal ever, the administration of US President Barack Obama is ready to notify Congress of plans to offer advanced aircraft to Saudi Arabia worth up to 60 billion dollars, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The newspaper said the administration was also in talks with the kingdom about potential naval and missile-defense upgrades that could be worth tens of billions of dollars more.

The administration sees the sale as part of a broader policy aimed at shoring up Arab allies against Iran, the report said.

  9. Scott Dancer says:

So arms sales is one of the few things we can still do?

  10. Serag says:

Yes, and we will continue to kill them. You are all sick bastards and deviants, why would a man be attracted to another man? This is a diseases that should be terminated. Who the hell r u to teach us what we should do? When it comes to ethics, plz step away, u, all western people, are just animals, and sorry for animals.
