White House Bites the Hand that Feeds Them

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

The Obama White House is seething with anger over criticism from liberals who say President Obama is more concerned with deal-making than ideological purity.

During an interview with The Hill from his West Wing office, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs blasted progressive naysayers, whom he said would never regard anything the president did as good enough.

Says Gibbs:

“I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested. I mean, it’s crazy. They wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president.”

Liberals have criticized Obama for moving bargaining on healthcare reform and tossing the public option and single-payer in the trash can, as well as the financial regulatory overhaul and even the $787 billion economic stimulus package, which some liberals said should have been larger.

Last week, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow described Obama political adviser David Axelrod as a “human pretzel” for his explanation of the administration’s position on gay marriage. Axelrod had explained that Obama opposes same-sex marriage but favors equal benefits for partners in gay relationships.

Gibbs dismissed such comments as attacks from the “professional left.”

  1. Joe in Colorado says:

Good morning. I think Team Obama is starting to lose it, as the reality of working for a man who can’t decide if he supports gay rights or not is beginning to set in. Also, the president’s spent upwards of $14 trillion to create 73,000 new jobs. Obama isn’t ready for prime time and people like Gibbs knows it. Frustration is setting in and his comments reflect this.

  2. 9Teen Boi says:

    OK. I get it.

Challenge the administration and they’re ready to say we’re kooks and druggies and need our urine tested for the bad stuff? How Soviet, Mr. Gibbs.

This is why Barack and Michelle had better not plan on living in the White House beyond 2012. We’re onto them and we’ve had all we can take.

  3. Jolly Roger says:

Heh-I just had some words about this one myself.

FUCK Robert Gibbs. With a half-rotten broomstick.

  4. feminazi says:

Keith had a Special Comment about Robert Gibbs’ less than artful comments to The Hill. I’ve watched politics since the 1950’s and I don’t recall a meltdown as dramatic and swift as this since Nixon’s tenure in Washington. Oh well, keep reaching out to all those southern, white conservatives who already hated you, President Obama. I’m sure you can’t count on them in 2012. And I have a bridge to sell you.

  5. Big Hank says:

Tested for drugs? Is this cat for real?

Sorry Gibby but I don’t do drugs. Maybe you need to be tested for syphilis because it is eating away at what’s left of your brain. What a moron.

  6. TOM339 says:

The blogosphere is populated by racist scoundrels who take pleasure in criticizing the “Dear Leader.”

Barack Obama descended from the heavens to save the world and one day, he will return to sit at the right side of his Father, having fulfilled his celestial mission, a mission universal and eternal in scope.

We must bow down to the Great and Powerful Obama!

  7. Capt. Wosocki says:

It’s a comment on Gibbs character to completely and grossly exaggerate perceived wrongdoings against President Obama.

The fact Mr. Obama is in trouble with white men, independents and gays and lesbians isn’t Rachel Maddow’s fault. President Obama has constructed for himself a well-documented persona of a man obsessed with bipartisanship from a party who is committed to seeing him fail.

Why the president refuses to stand up and fight like the likes of Eric Cantor, John Boehner, Sarah Palin and even Rush Limbaugh, suggests to many that he’s a weak man. A sissy, for lack of a better word.

So the Obama White House has reached the level of attacking its base with suggestions we need to be tested for drugs? I mean, seriously?

  8. Harry says:

Methinks it is time Robert Gibbs to resign, write a book and become a commenter for FOX News. He’s worn out and worn down.

  9. Eric Equality Kuntz says:

Who is “Dear Leader” talking about?

I would $500 that 95% of their remarks about “Dear Leader” is positive. “Dear Leader” controls the lefty media and blogs. Robert Gibbs is off the chain.

  10. Jolly Roger says:

Really….. just TRY to comment unflatteringly on most of the big dog “left” blogs. And watch your comment (and your account) vanish.

  11. Pechanga says:

    I’m confused?

    President Obama has waffled on:

    1. gay marriage
    2. redeploying the troops out of Iraq
    3. the public option
    4. single-payer
    5. closing Guantanamo Bay
    6. net neutrality
    7. prosecuting Bush and Cheney

But Robert Gibbs says the “professional left” is the problem? Try, pot, meet kettle.

  12. It is my opinion the only appropriate response is for Robert Gibbs to resign his post.

This is not the first time Gibbs has stuck his foot in it but this time it’s different. To somehow suggest critics of this president lack judgment because we’re under the influence of drugs is offensive and just plain wrong.

I must conclude this is the opinion held within the Obama inner circle when confronted by criticism.

  13. R.J. says:

I never thought I’d say this but Dana Perino is beginning to look like a professional press secretary compared to Robert Gibbs. He must resign. He’s lost it.

  14. bradfrmphnx says:

I think all of the criticism towards Obama is warranted, and then some.

Just a question for those who don’t want him re-elected though…

No other Dem, Hillary (whom you all hate) or anybody else will challenge him for the Democratic ticket. The incumbent never gets unseated and it won’t start with him. So are you prepared to put another Republican in office? That is my question. Personally, I would rater have broken glass for dinner than have another Reublican in the White House anytime soon. We must choose our battles wisely here.

  15. mbmdl says:

Early in my medical career, I worked as an RN at a hospital specializing in the treatment of substance and alcohol abuse. I can assure Mr. Gibbs that critics of his boss — professional and otherwise, don’t need to be tested for drugs. This statement was boneheaded and not what I would expect from the Obama White House. Perhaps, Mr. Gibbs needs a vacation and some well-earned downtime, away from cable news. A week in Hawaii, perhaps?

  16. Ziggy says:

To the person who said everyone hates Hillary, I don’t hate her. In fact, I think she and Bill are two of the shrewdest political people in American history.

Think about it. In 1987 Hillary was elected as chairwoman of the Children’s Defense Fund and of the New World Foundation, a charity organization headquartered in New York that had helped launch the Children’s Defense Fund.

But somehow, once Madame Clinton assumed that role, hundreds of thousands of dollars went missing and some say eventually went to pay for Chelsea’s very expensive Stanford education and eventual $5 million dollar wedding.

I mean, I’m not smart enough to scam the system like this and not end up in a Federal prison. But Hillary figured out how to make it happen. For goodness sake, Hillary still keeps her EU/Irish passport because Ireland is a “non-extradition country”with the USA.

  17. DMason says:

Ziggy — No shit? Never heard this one before.

  18. Joe says:

I’ve had it with Gibbs. The only Democrat I’m voting for this Nov. is Jerry Brown. I’m voting Green for the rest. Well, I may vote for Boxer.

What is it with Democrats. Obama presented himself as a progressive in the primaries. When progressives hold him up to what he campaigned as, he vilifies progressives. Fuck him.

  19. Walk on Socks says:

President Obama is governing like a rightwing, Republican. There is no argument about it and poor Robert Gibbs has the unenviable task of trying to portray Obama as a centrist.

His Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform was set-up to sell the American people that Social Security is either on the verge of insolvency or, adds to the out of the control Federal deficit.

But the truth is, Social Security is only at risk for insolvency if the Federal government keeps borrowing from the Social Security trust fund.

Furthermore, Social Security doesn’t add one, thin dime to the Federal deficit. But, the Obama White House is working 24/7 to convince the American people otherwise.

Worse still, his administration has at least two more major Wall Street bailouts on the books and if they are passed by the Congress, the Federal deficit will reach $18 trillion by 2015.

Mr. Obama campaigned to end the Iraq war but by now, even the most ardent Obamabot must admit that US combat troops are in the region for at least another 25 years — maybe longer.

The president is going into Iran. It’s not a question of “if” but, “when.” As long as Israel has a leadership seat in the Pentagon, and we have a weakling in the White House, look out because there will never be peace in the region.

No, boys and girls but Flowbee was correct about Obama all along.

  20. karmanot says:

“They wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president.” If only he were.

  21. Greg Equality Lengkong says:

Dennis Kucinich would make a great president.

After nearly 20 months in office, I can’t stand to hear Obama’s voice! He’s so over!

  22. retahyajyajav says:

Never at a loss for words, Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) said Gibbs should be fired and called Gibbs “Bozo the Spokesman.”

“I don’t think he should resign, I think he should be fired. He’s done a miserable job. He’s so far in over his head he’d have to reach up to touch his shoes.”

    Ouch! 🙂

  23. Chad Lebanon says:

retahyajyajav – Alan Grayson said that? He called Robert Gibbs “Bozo the Spokesman?”

ROFLMAO! He’s a hoot. Grayson, I mean. Not Gibbs.
