NASA Discovers Evidence ‘alien life exists on Saturn’s moon, Titan’

Sunday, June 6, 2010

This is just so cool and suggests what we don’t know about the existence of life and the universe could fill an ocean!

NASA scientists believe they have discovered vital clues that appear to indicate that primitive aliens could be living on the planet.

Data from NASA’s Cassini probe has analyzed the complex chemistry on the surface of Titan, which experts say is the only moon orbiting Saturn to have a dense atmosphere.

They have discovered that life forms have been breathing in the planet’s atmosphere and also feeding on its surface’s fuel.

The research has been detailed in two separate studies.

The first paper, in the journal Icarus, shows that hydrogen gas flowing throughout the planet’s atmosphere disappeared at the surface. This suggested that alien forms could in fact breathe.

The second paper, in the Journal of Geophysical Research, concluded that there was lack of the chemical on the surface.

Scientists were then led to believe it had been possibly consumed by life.

Chris McKay, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center in California who led the research, said: “We suggested hydrogen consumption because it’s the obvious gas for life to consume on Titan, similar to the way we consume oxygen on Earth.

“If these signs do turn out to be a sign of life, it would be doubly exciting because it would represent a second form of life independent from water-based life on Earth.”

  1. Stephan Iversonn says:

This is fascinating and a perfect post for a Sunday.

After all, Sunday is Christianity’s holiest day of the week and historically, it’s always been representatives of the Christian faith(s) who claim — without an iota of evidence that earth is the only place in all of the entire universe where life exists.

In time, and I mean in a hundred or more years, my guess is, we will discover that life is far more common than ever thought. Will all life be what we measure to be intelligent? Who knows? But, some will be much more intelligent than humans.

  2. feminazi says:

If life exists on Titan, or for that matter, elsewhere in our solar system, I worry that humans could wind up doing to them what Europeans did to the inhabitants of North America, which was to primarily introduce disease and force our religious beliefs and Dogma on them. I hope we’re wiser when first contact is made.

  3. DMason says:

I’m sure Wal Mart and Dell Computer are salivating at this news. Imagine all the cheap labor they can exploit by enslaving an alien population who just wants to live in peace.

  4. Harry says:

David — Agreed. WalMart is are running out of poor countries to use as slaves. But don’t forget the US military. They’re slime masters.

  5. that would be fascinating if it turns out to indicate the existence of life, but there’s just so much to still be seen.

  6. Mets Fan says:

Wow. The mind reels at this discovery.

I know there’s an idealized notion of alien life from Star Trek. Then there’s Stephen Hawkings doom and gloom scenario warning against contacting aliens. But I think it will turn out to be somewhere in-between the two.

If there’s life on Titan, leave them alone.

  7. Brigadoon says:

You always have the most interesting and provocative stuff on your blog, Christopher. If Titan turns out to have life — in whatever form, I hope we just watch from afar and leave them to their world. Otherwise, we will have them wearing Nike shoes, listening to rap and, eating fast food.

  8. Walk on Socks says:

    Wow! Wow! Wow!

    This is truly amazing.

  9. Romanov says:

This is not truly amazing by any stretch of the imagination. Nor is it very likely at all. The idea is that these “Life forms” would inhale Hydrogen rather than oxygen and exhale methane rather than carbon dioxide. Keep in mind this is all expected to happen in an environment that exposes everything to -290 F degrees. Some say, “Well all you need is a little heat” WRONG, you think our existence was the based on a few extra btu’s thrown our way?

Its NOT LIKELY AT ALL. Evidence of life isn’t proof of life.

I’ll give you an example of the chances. For life to occure, (that is a living breathing eating organizm) you have a better chance of seeing a tornado rip thru a garbage dump and build a perfect boeing 747 than you do for achieving the proper conditions for life to start.

I think we have a bunch of gung hoe fresh out of college scientists that would love to stake the claim of finding alien life. Titan has been reviewed for years, this isn’t news.

  10. Romanov says:

By the way.. since when is wearing nikes, listening to rap and eating fast food a bad thing..

We wear shoes cause they comfort our feet, we listen to music (whatever that music is) because we enjoy it, and people eat fast food because it’s good, Not that its good for you, but it’s good which makes you momentarily happy. Leave them be???? Their Freezing their asses off!!!!

  11. Ghost of 420's Past says:

Who is to say wether there is life or not? Why can’t we believe that there MIGHT be life and get on with our lives? If they do exist, send them coats and fire wood, if not, figure out what is using up this hydrogen.
