CNN Pundit Threatens to Shoot Census Workers

Monday, April 5, 2010

CNN’s newest on-air hire, rightwing pundit Eric Erickson, threatened on his radio show to shoot any census worker who appears at his front door. Erickson later claimed that his comment was “misconstrued.”

But Media Matters for America has the verbatim quote from the April 1st, 2010 edition of WMAC’s In the Morning with Erick Erickson.

Listen HERE.

ERICKSON: This is crazy. What gives the Commerce Department the right to ask me how often I flush my toilet? Or about going to work? I’m not filling out this form. I dare them to try and come throw me in jail. I dare them to. Pull out my wife’s shotgun and see how that little ACS twerp likes being scared at the door. They’re not going on my property. They can’t do that. They don’t have the legal right, and yet they’re trying.

As CNN continues to hemorrhage millions of regular viewers, you have to wonder what audience demographic they’re hoping to reach by hiring someone like this rightwing loon? No wonder the once mighty cable news channel has become a mere shell of its original self.

Oh my God. This is horrible. I don’t watch CNN and this is one of the myriad reasons why. I thought it was illegal to threaten to kill people. Census workers are employees of the Commerce Dept. and as such are Federal workers. Erickson needs to be visited by the FBI.

  2. JollyRoger says:

Erick Erickscum is truly one of those people who the world would be better off without. He’s in the same septic tank as hid pedophile dope addict hero.

That the Cheerleaders’ Neutered Network would hire him after losing Beck tells you all you need to know about them.

  3. Peace Nick says:

Erickson’s threat is in keeping with the rich tradition of rightwing nutcases who threaten Federal workers.

Glenn Back, Ann Cuntler, Sarah Palin and now Eric Erickson.

I am not the least bit surprised. However, what does surprise me is CNN allowing this behavior from one of the paid pundits.

Maybe they think the controversy will generate ratings?

  4. bradfrmphnx says:

This was just one of many gaffes that was said by Erickson. CNN actually did an interview and was asking him questions about all the wacky things he has been saying on his blog, in which he apologized profusely and said he was wrong to say all of those things. It was insane.

Only CNN would seek out a jack ass, interview him to expose his being a jack ass, and then hire the jackass. It’s a one size fits all at CNN.

  5. No Nonsense says:

Those questions aren’t even on the form! Jeesuz these people are idiots, and how did he even get a job?

  6. Big Hank says:

The fact of the matter is, 40% of the Census workers are unemployed victims of the Bush recession and struggling to make ends meet and put food on their plates and a roof over their head.

If something happens to a Census worker thanks to this fat ass’ tacit support of violence, Eric Erickson, CNN, and Time Warner, should be charged jointly in the prosecution of the crime.

Erickson doesn’t belong blogging, on the radio or on CNN: he belongs in jail.

  7. Fran says:

I was “census’ed” for the first time this year. With all the hub bub about it, all they asked is how many people live in your house & what ethnic origin. It took about 2 minutes to complete. Here I thought it would be lengthy & have all kinds of personal info questions.

The government already has access to all your other information… how much you make through taxes, what your property & house is worth through public real estate records & deeds. Even your retirement savings– those are all reported to the IRS by the employer, or retirement account company. They send you a copy, but your copy says the amount was already reported to the IRS.

So for this windbag to imply people will be asked
how often they flush their toilet, Or about going to work is nuts.

    Threatening violence is irresponsible.
I hope he does not fill out his census form & they put his ass in jail.

  8. JollyRoger says:

I’m dying here. Tell me, what is the dustup with the Cheerleaders’ Neutered Network?

  9. Brigadoon says:

Paging Ted Turner. Paging, Ted Turner. There’s an immediate need for you to come out of retirement and purchase CNN from Time Warner, and begin the arduous process of firing everyone and returning to the network to journalism and not chasing FOX News’ tail.

  10. VicoDANIEL says:

I watched the clip and read the transcript.

My first inclination was to ask why the mainstream media isn’t reporting this serious threat of gun violence to a Federal worker. Then it occurred to me.

No one watches CNN now, so unless they read this Blog or Media Matters, they wouldn’t know.

But just as an aside. I am writing a complaint letter to the FCC. The FCC needs to step up and regulate the people CNN has on staff.

  11. Harry says:

Misconstrued? No, Eric. I think 98% of people who read about, and listen to politics, understand English quite well.

  12. Rachel says:

I guess I’m the only person in the U.S. who doesn’t know who is Eric Erickson? I don’t watch CNN and I haven’t for years. Sounds like they’re trying to put put a product to compete with FIXED Noise. This is why I stopped watching CNN back around the 2006 midterm elections.

  13. Estacada says:

CNN fired Aaron Brown and hires Eric Erickson?

Little wonder they’ve lost more than half their audience in the passed year. People who would watch CNN remember what the network used to be like and it ain’t nothing like the mess on the air today.

  14. Dan says:

Its funny how the right is always hardcore pro-constitution… until its something they don’t like. Then, “to hell with what the constitution says, I’m not filling out a census form”. I also find it interesting that he mentions flushing toilets and going to work. I am a census enumerator and I have yet to see any forms (not saying they don’t exist, I just don’t know of any) that ask anything except; name, age, DOB, Hispanic/non-hispanic, Race, and if you live anywhere else. I also want to make the point that when we are enumerating only 3 of the 5 questions have to be answered before the form is considered complete.

  15. Christine Harrison says:

I cannot believe that CNN is ignoring this insane rant by a newly hired commentator. They should fire him immediately. Threatening to pull a gun on a census worker is just horrible and no reputable news outlet should tolerate it from one of their on air employees.

I feel very sorry for census workers who will be going door to door. They should not have to fear for their lives. Erickson’s statement is downright un-American. If a census worker is injured this year Erickson and CNN will have to take some of the blame.

By the way we were among those randomly selected to fill out the American Community Survey in addition to the regular census form. I seem to remember that many of the questions in it used to be included on census forms we filled out in years past. It did not ask how many times we flush our toilet but it was much longer than the census form and took about 30 minutes to complete. No problem…glad to do it to help our community.

  16. Christine Harrison says:

I think people are confusing the census with the American Community Survey. Both are conducted by the census bureau but the ACS is an ongoing program. We received the ACS form just a couple of weeks before the census form. It is a much longer than the census. Here’s how the census bureau explains it:

    ” The American Community Survey
    * is an on-going survey
    * is sent to a sample of the population
    * tells us what the population looks like and how it lives
    * helps communities determine where to locate services and allocate resources”

You can see the American Community Survey form with all the questions at

As I said before we had no problem about answering the questions.

  17. Randy Arroyo says:

Hi Rachel – You’re not missing a thing. If you want to know, visit which is Erickson’s blog. It’s anti-Obama, anti-Pelosi, anti-Reid, anti-healthcare and pro-gun.

  18. bradfrmphnx says:

Christine Harrison…CNN knows all about Erickson. Howard Kurtz interviewed him on air asking why he said some of the things he said.

    From Video Cafe…

“Howard Kurtz interviews the newest member of their “best political team on television”, RedState’s Erick Erickson and asks him about the hateful rhetoric that’s been posted on his blog. Erickson’s defense pretty much amounts to pretending he had no idea what he was saying, that he gets any traffic and he’s all grown up now, so hey… no worries right? Pitiful. If CNN actually thinks this is an adequate response to their bad judgment for hiring him, they’re sadly mistaken.”

  19. Christine Harrison says:

Thanks, Brad, for the link to info on Erickson. I had never heard of him until the news that CNN hired him. After viewing the video I’m feeling really discouraged that CNN wanted him. I sure hope he doesn’t help their ratings. That would be a terrible shame.

  20. Nancie Newman says:

I am one of these crazy census workers and believe it or not I did have some man threaten to shoot me within 5 seconds if I was not gone. He then moved his truck so I could not leave and proceeded to kick my vehicle. I would say he watches CNN but that is giving this moron too much credit
