Has President Obama at long last found his inner LBJ?

The New York Times reports:

“The White House has signaled to lawmakers that assistance for midterm elections — for example, presidential visits and fund-raisers, will be prioritized for those who support the bill.”

    I sure hope so!

  2. Estacada says:

I wonder if arm twisting at this late juncture will bare fruit?

Many of the Democrats disinclined to support the healthcare bill come from red districts anyway and these Congress and House members could very well lose reelection regardless of any support from the White House.

  3. Woodcliffe says:

Obama’s currency isn’t worth what it was a year ago.

The administration talkingheads were canvassing the Sunday shows saying by next week at this time, the healthcare reform bill will be law.

This is an extraordinary bit of hubris from a White House that has behaved more like frightened mice than a powerful majority.

  4. Brigadoon says:

Healthcare this week? The Obama administration will have to invent a new excuse for failing to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and DOMA. Rahm Emanuel had better put on his thinking cap.

  5. libhomo says:

This is disgusting. Pressuring Democratic lawmakers to support GOP style reverse Robin Hood legislation is reprehensible. I can’t wait to vote agsinst Obama in 2012.

  6. Aunt Peg says:

This debate has lasted so long I thought I would die before seeing it through to its end.

I am one of the lone voices in the wilderness who wanted to see Medicare available for all. Medicare isn’t perfect but it has been a Godsend for me. I buy a Medigap plan and my out of pocket is less than $900 a year, no matter how much I cost the hospital.

Too bad Medicare for all wasn’t an option. I think it makes the most sense and works best to control costs. Just my opinion.

  7. DMason says:

Call me naive but how is that Pelosi still can’t find the votes to get this thing done? After 14 months, what has been doing with her $202,000 annual salary other than redecorating the Congressional mess hall?

  8. libhomo says:

Aunt Peg: You are absolutely correct about Medicare for All.

  9. And yet….he was with Kucinich today in Ohio and some of the other dem candidates were all “busy.” Firedoglake has more. Given his shitty record and unwillingness to fulfill his promises, I think Woodcliffe has it right–brand Obama isn’t what it was on Jan. 21, 2009.

  10. Fran says:

Oh hell~ Michael Moore was on Countdown thrashing this healthcare reform plan. He called it an “AMC Pacer” (piece of shit car), saying that is what this healthcare bill is, supporting Kucinich’s stand against the bill.

Here’s the thing– I’m guessing Moore has made enough $ to afford, his health care plan, and we know Kucinich has the Congressional Cadillac coverage.

It’s a lot easier to imply we need to go back to the drawing board, after a year of kicking this bill around (mostly GOP stalling to get pockets stuffed with $$$$ from the Wealthcare industry), when you have health care access & coverage.

For those whose lives are literally on the line, they can’t wait anymore.
And in case Kucinich & Moore were not paying attention- the GOP obstructionist tactics have caused them to have to fight like hell to move forward on this at all. In the entire house & senate– the GOP gave two- count them two votes for health care reform.

I don’t know what planet those 2 are living on, but coming back to the table with even more things to fight about is not going to yield progress.

We have to get our foot in the door, to later kick the door open & get into more serious reform.
