Israel Harvested Organs in ’90s Without Permission

Monday, December 21, 2009

This is disturbing. Israel admitted that in the 1990s, its pathologists harvested organs from dead bodies, including Palestinians, without permission of their families.

The issue emerged with publication of an interview with the then-head of Israel’s Abu Kabir forensic institute, Dr. Jehuda Hiss. The interview was conducted in 2000 by an American academic, who released it because of a huge controversy last summer over an allegation by a Swedish newspaper that Israel was killing Palestinians in order to harvest their organs. Israel hotly denied the charge.

Parts of the interview were broadcast on Israel’s Channel 2 TV over the weekend. In it, Hiss said, “We started to harvest corneas … Whatever was done was highly informal. No permission was asked from the family.”

The Channel 2 report said that in the 1990s, forensic specialists at Abu Kabir harvested skin, corneas, heart valves and bones from the bodies of Israeli soldiers, Israeli citizens, Palestinians and foreign workers, often without permission from relatives.

In the interview, Hiss described how his doctors would mask the removal of corneas from bodies. “We’d glue the eyelid shut,” he said. “We wouldn’t take corneas from families we knew would open the eyelids.”

Hiss became director of the institute in 1988. He said in the interview that the practice of harvesting organs without permission began in the “early 1990s.” However, he also said that military surgeons removed a thin layer of skin from bodies as early as 1987 to treat burn victims. Hiss said he believed that was done with family consent. The harvesting ended in 2000, he said.

Complaints against the institute, where autopsies of dead bodies are performed, at the time of Hiss’ dismissal came from relatives of Israeli soldiers and civilians as well as Palestinians. The bodies belonged to people who died from various causes, including diseases, accidents and Israeli-Palestinian violence, but there has been no evidence to back up the claim in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that Israeli soldiers killed Palestinians for their organs. Angry Israeli officials called the report “anti-Semitic.”

So the Israelis are no better than the Communist Chinese? Noted.

I am not the least bit surprised to learn the Israelis engaged in this practice and you are correct: they are no better than the Chinese who also engage in this repulsive practice. It is worth mentioning that their victims included Palestinians. For many Israelis, the Palestinians aren’t human and when you remove a groups humanity, it opens the door to treating them in ways less than human. It’s shameful to me as a Jew to see how little Israelis have learned.

  2. Harry says:

I’m surprised this information got out. I mean, there’s an agreement in the media to always portray Israel as perfect. In any case, they’re sickening.

  3. Joe in Colorado says:

Every criticism of Israel doesn’t mean you’re an “anti-Semite.” This is just wrong on so many levels. You need full disclosure to harvest someone’s organs. Even in Israel.

  4. libhomo says:

We should end all aid to Israel, cut off all trade, and break off diplomatic relations with that country.

  5. mary says:

This is just another piece of evidence which shows that Israel has no respect for anyone, even the dead. This ghoulish practice is being glibly defended by the government as something they did “informally,” and that “we don’t do it anymore,” as if we have any reason to believe that. They have a continuous supply of unwitting “organ donors” in the Palestinians they kill, so why should they stop?

  6. No Nonsense says:

Duly note that the exposure of this is immediately “anti-Semitic” , no apology, nothing.

  7. VicoDANIEL says:

    Follow the money.

No matter who you are, money seems to corrupt and distort people’s sense of decency and humanity.

I think Feminazi is correct: strip humanity away and governments, organizations and individuals are free to treat their fellow human beings like shit.

Thanks for posting this, Christopher. I’m sure you will get a troll defending Israel and calling you an anti-Semite for posting this. I hope you delete them.

  8. Ryan says:

Didn’t the Nazis also use dead bodies without consent?

  9. How stupid of them. Pianofortes are much smaller and lighter.

  10. DMason says:

    One word: ewwwwwwwwwwwww.

  11. mary says:

This should really be fully investigated. Where did these body parts go after they were “harvested”? Who was on the receiving end, were they packed in dry ice and sold to some Swiss clinic or US hospital, or what? And you can’t do this kind of thing in secret, you have to have a lot of collusion. This is really disgusting and I’m waiting to see just what is going to be done. The Israelis become more despicable every day, it seems.

  12. Estacada says:

    Not to mention, who profited?

People aren’t parts to be sold to the highest bidder. I really wonder what is happening to our world when people can be cut up and sold like meat at a butcher shop.

  13. Reamus says:

Sick stuff just in time for the festive Christian holidays.

I’m with VicoDANIEL on this one. I think, sad to say, he/she nailed it.

  14. Rock says:

This is so disturbing. And to think this goes on after what happened in WWII? Unbelievable.
