Congressional Democrats Turn Sour on President Obama

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

What do you get when you add: No Single Payer+No Public Option+No Medicare Buy-In+No Importation of Canadian Drugs? A first year president in trouble with his own party.

The Huffington Post reports:

Congressional Democrats are starting to voice their anger at President Obama over the way health care legislation has been compromised, blaming him for not fighting harder.

Congressman John Conyers (D-MI): “The president keeps listening to Rahm Emanuel. No public option, no extending Medicare to 55, no nothing, an excise tax, God! The insurance lobby is taking over.”

Congressman Dave Obey (D-WI): “The White House has been useless. It’s ridiculous, and the Obama administration is sitting on the sidelines. That’s nonsense.”

Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY):” Snowe? Stupak? Lieberman? Who left these people in charge? It’s time for the president to get his hands dirty. Some of us have compromised our compromised compromise. We need the president to stand up for the values our party shares. We must stop letting the tail wag the dog of this debate.”

Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI): “This bill appears to be legislation that the president wanted in the first place, so I don’t think focusing it on Lieberman really hits the truth. I think they could have been higher. I certainly think a stronger bill would have been better in every respect.”

Congresswoman Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA): “Thirty percent of Democrats will not come out and vote if there is no public option in the health care bill. What does that tell you?”

Politico’s Craig Gordon notes: “Time and again, [Obama] rebuffed Democrats’ requests to speak up more forcefully about what he wanted — a strategy that allowed Obama to preserve maximum flexibility to declare victory at the end of the process, no matter what the final bill looked like.”

President Obama said he was willing to stake his presidency on passing healthcare reform. But instead of going mano-a-mano with obstructionist Republicans in the Congress, and most importantly, Sen. Joe Lieberman, Mr. Obama squandered much of 2009 in a feeble attempt to secure the Olympics for Chicago and jetting off to Oslo, Norway to accept an undeserved Nobel Peace prize. Democrats repeatedly begged the president to fight harder for healthcare but alas, the president was MIA.

  1. MIA is an understatement…he is an utter disappointment on so many levels at this point that I can’t even begin to list. One term folks is gonna be all he gets if he doesn’t pull a rabbit out of the hat and get some things accomplished.

It will be a cold day in Hell before he gets a dime from me and I will be damned if I am going out to register voters and going door to door again. Fuck politicians, they are all just a big old bunch of liars.

  2. JollyRoger says:

As I said before…. no public option, no vote for Obama in 2012. I didn’t like him much in the 2008 cycle, and I was right. I’m not happy about that, but the facts are what they are.

  3. Jim says:

Personally, I’m livid that Obama has abandoned the very issues on which he ran. This healthcare “reform” if passed in its present form, will be a disaster. Whatever it is, it is certainly NOT reform.

  4. Rock says:

I’m so disappointed I don’t know where to begin. All I can say is I won’t give a rat’s arse about the ’12 elections unless Palin wins the GOP nomination. Anyone but that moron.

  5. Big Hank says:

Those are damning comments from Democratic members of the Congress.

Not what you would expect to hear from Feingold and Woolsey.

  6. Fran says:

Just passing any bill with the label “health care reform” on it is not good enough.

This failure & the ongoing wars (yes, plural), makes the new boss look a lot like the old boss.

Obama is floundering, and his main success has been clinching the fact he will be a one term president.

  7. Estacada says:

    Russ Feingold doesn’t suffer fools.

    Draw your own conclusion.

  8. obama’s complete divorce from this bill is strange and telling at the same time

hence the piece of shit we are going to get – because passing anything to the senate is the priority – they dont care how bad it is
