Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s centrist, Democratic Leadership Council-leanings were on display for all to see during her recent visit to Russia, where she met with an outspoken foe of gay rights during her two-day trip to Moscow.
Clinton failed to decry the rampant and sometimes violent homophobia in Russia. She attended a phot-op ceremony unveiling a statue of Walt Whitman at Moscow State University with Russian officials who including Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov.
Luzhkov has blocked all attempts to hold gay pride marches in Moscow, once even saying such marches “can be described in no other way than as satanic.”
Secretary Clinton did not mention of the issue during the ceremony. Many biographers have described Whitman as gay and America gay activists have claimed him as symbol of their movement. The irony of the ceremony was obviously lost on the anti-gay Mayor Luzhkov.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that Clinton is equally clueless about claims Walt Whitman was gay. I would not be the least bit surprised.
