“Black Fags” and Academic Idiots

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Now, I just typed the date and I’m sure it reads 2009. Not 1959 and certainly not 1909. So, it comes as something of a shock to realize that racism and homophobia are still a part of the American academic landscape:

A Geneva High School teacher is being accused of making anti-gay and racist comments in his classroom.

Dave Burk, who teaches consumer education, is accused of making the comments by his students during an Oct. 5 lecture on tax money involving the National Endowment for the Arts.

“How would you feel about your tax dollars going to pay some black fag in New York to take pictures of other black fags?” Burk allegedly asked, according to student Jordan Hunter, who reported the teacher.

According to his attorney, D.J. Tegeler, Burk did not want to intentionally offend anybody and if he did, he apologizes.

“Mr. Burk is cooperating fully with both the principal, the dean of students and the school board,” Tegeler said.

Hunter, who is gay and reported Burk to the administration, wants Burk fired.

“If he wants to talk about a poor place to put our tax dollars, I think his salary is a poor place to put our tax dollars,” said Hunter.

  1. Wow…he should be fired and kudos to the kid who reported him. I once had a US History teacher refer to gays as limp wristed faggots and I just kept my mouth shut, a decision that I regret to this day.

I’m surprised such comments would be made by a teacher in a public high school setting. Usually teachers are very careful about what language departs their lips in front of a classroom of students.

Burk should be canned for this. Not cool and not funny.

I checked the link, and it looks like it happened in Illinois. I would have thought it took place in the deep south. Racism and homophobia really are national problems.

Fire his dumb ass, he should not be teaching, if he knows not tolorence, then he knows not wisdom, and that is intolerable !!

  5. Mauigirl says:

“If” he offended anyone??? Please, I hate those kinds of “apologies.” He should be fired, definitely.

  6. bradfrmphnx says:

    Fire his sorry ass.

  7. Randy Arroyo says:

I hope the parents in the district step up and step in because it’s the property taxes that pay for district operational costs like teachers salaries. If it were my kid’s school, I would be pissed and I would demand immediate action. The teacher should be fired.

That thumping noise you hear is me, banging my head against the wall…

  9. Rock says:

I’m not surprised at all. I’ve noticed the bigoted in our society feel emboldened to let their closeted fears and views spill out into the open ever since Obama was elected last year.

This why precisely why a number of parents my kids know send their children to Catholic schools despite not being Catholic or agreeing with the Pope on any issue. They believe the quality of education is much better than the education available in public schools.

  11. Joe in Colorado says:

Good for student Jordan Hunter for stepping up and doing something about his teacher. I’ve had my own run-ins with peculiar professors in my college years so I appreciate how uncomfortable they can make you as a student.

  12. VicoDANIEL says:

I wonder if the Teachers Union will come to Dave Burk’s defense?

I can’t wait to see how this one plays out.
