Rep. Patrick Murphy to Host House Speeches in Support to Repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

Tonight at 9:00PM, Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-PA), will host an hour of speeches by House members in support of his bill, HR 1283, to repeal the viciously homophobic, Clinton-era military policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” The event is basically an hour of read “special orders” on the House floor. HR 1283 currently has 176 co-sponsors. C-SPAN will cover the event live so you might want to check it out.

Unlike President Obama, who has developed the frustrating habit of delivering meaningless lip service to LGBT community, vis a vis the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Congressman Patrick Murphy is actually trying to do something about the terrible hardship the discriminatory policy is perpetrating on gay and lesbian soldiers.

Co-sponsors of HR 1283 include the following House members:

Mrs. TAUSCHER, Mr. ABERCROMBIE, Mr. ACKERMAN, Mr. ANDREWS, Ms. BALDWIN, Ms. BERKLEY, Mr. BERMAN, Mr. BISHOP of New York, Mr. BLUMENAUER, Mr. BRADY of Pennsylvania, Mrs. CAPPS, Mr. CAPUANO, Mr. CARSON of Indiana, Ms. CASTOR of Florida, Mrs. CHRISTENSEN, Ms. CLARKE, Mr. CLAY, Mr. CLEAVER, Mr. COHEN, Mr. CONYERS, Mr. COURTNEY, Mr. CROWLEY, Mr. CUMMINGS, Mrs. DAVIS of California, Mr. DEFAZIO, Mr. DELAHUNT, Ms. DELAURO, Mr. DINGELL, Mr. DOYLE, Ms. EDWARDS of Maryland, Mr. ELLISON, Mr. ENGEL, Ms. ESHOO, Mr. FARR, Mr. FATTAH, Mr. FILNER, Mr. FRANK of Massachusetts, Mr. GRIJALVA, Mr. GUTIERREZ, Mr. HALL of New York, Mr. HARE, Ms. HARMAN, Mr. HASTINGS of Florida, Mr. HINCHEY, Ms. HIRONO, Mr. HOLT, Mr. HONDA, Mr. INSLEE, Mr. ISRAEL, Ms. EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON of Texas, Mr. JOHNSON of Georgia, Mr. KENNEDY, Mr. KUCINICH, Mr. LANGEVIN, Mr. LARSEN of Washington, Ms. LEE of California, Mr. LEWIS of Georgia, Mr. LOEBSACK, Ms. ZOE LOFGREN of California, Mrs. LOWEY, Mr. LYNCH, Mrs. MALONEY, Mr. MARKEY of Massachusetts, Ms. MATSUI, Mrs. MCCARTHY of New York, Ms. MCCOLLUM, Mr. MCDERMOTT, Mr. MCGOVERN, Mr. MEEK of Florida, Mr. MEEKS of New York, Mr. MICHAUD, Mr. GEORGE MILLER of California, Ms. MOORE of Wisconsin, Mr. MORAN of Virginia, Mr. MURPHY of Connecticut, Mr. PATRICK J. 1. Arizona Leatherneck says:

Obama needed to sign a repeal bill in his first 100 days in office while the trumpets were blowing and the flags were rippling.

Now, his political capital is shrinking and he’s getting sucked into his very own Vietnam in Afghanistan. I hope DADT is repealed this year. It’s wrong and it’s unjust.

  2. Tao says:

As absurd as it sounds, and everyone has to remember that this is politics, this might explain all the dramatics over Afghanistan from the prior post.

Obama has clearly stated that Afghanistan is the war we must win and yet the military is going nuts over what they believe is a lack of influence on the discussion of Afghanistan…

Going off and embarrassing the President, who supports the military in regards to Afghanistan, is not exactly the wisest political move to make…unless the dispute is not really over Afghanistan but rather over the idea of tying DADT to increased troops deployed in Afghanistan.

  3. Brigadoon says:

No wonder Obama kept Robert Gates at Defense. Gates is cool to repealing DADT and his position gives Obama a needed cover to stall, delay and otherwise drag his feet getting this awful policy tossed out once and for all. That’s OK. In 3 years it’s 2012 and we can re-visit who we want in the White House.

  4. libhomo says:

The Democrats seem to want to procrastinate action on queer issues indefinitely.

  5. Jim says:

It’s about time someone is paying more than lip service to once and for all do away with “Don’t ask, don’t tell.”

  6. Harry says:

I’m glad to see Rep. Loretta Sanchez listed as one of the bill’s cosponsors.

  7. david martin says:

A former Pennsylvanian who is very proud of Congressmen Murphy. BRAVO
