Where is President Obama’s Voice on Maine?

I agree with David Mixner. Mixner writes the time is now for President Obama to speak out on the battle over gay marriage equality underway in Maine. State lawmakers took the bold and courageous step to bring marriage equality to gay and lesbian residents only to suffer a viciously homophobic assault from the Catholic church and the Maggie Gallagher brigade.

Now, Maine voters will be asked to vote for a proposition that will deny basic human rights to gay and lesbian couples.

During his years in local Chicago politics, and the U.S. Senate and later, as a presidential candidate, Mr. Obama made it abundantly clear he opposed measures such as the one ion the ballot n Maine. Despite his personal opposition to gay marriage equality, this is his opportunity to reaffirm to the millions of LGBT Americans who voted for him that he is indeed, our “fiercest advocate.”

Step up to the plate Mr. President….

    “Batters Up!!!”

  2. Mauigirl says:

I totally agree. He needs to speak out.

  3. Peace Nick says:

    I agree totally.

A year in and neither Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell or DOMA have been repealed, so this could be an olive branch to the gay community.

Let’s see how Obama plays it.

  4. Harry says:

I would like to see this too but I’m not holding my breath. Obama is too much of a centrist to take a position on a gay marriage repeal proposition.

  5. Woodcliffe says:

I would like to see President Obama come out and make a bold statement challenging the voters of Maine to not support the state gay marriage repeal proposition on the ballot.

Will he do it? I don’t know. Obama just lost big in the Senate Finance Committee on a key piece of healthcare reform legislation, so I imagine he’s feeling fairly beat down right now.

One thing is certain. Afghanistan looms large and as long as it does, Obama can hide behide behind it.

  6. libhomo says:

Obama is cowering in Copenhagen instead of fighting for the public option here in the US. He’s just a useless, Clintonian Republican.

  7. My guess is he’ll speak out on Maine right after he demands the repeal of DADT and DOMA. Not. Holding. My. Breath.

  8. I’m really disappointed with President Obama’s handling of the issues. Where’s the change?

  9. Rachel says:

I think President Obama knew the public option was going down in flames, so he chose to accompany his wife to Copenhagen where a victory for the Olympic venue was certain and he can sell it as something his administration could do. I would’ve preferred the public option and screw the Olympics.

  10. Bill says:

The only person Barrack Obama is a ‘fierce advocate’ for is HIMSELF.

He will not get another vote from me. Nor will the DNC receive another red cent of my $$$ until they keep their promises to us.
