Rep. Barney Frank Refuses to Co-Sponsor DOMA Repeal Bill

Monday, September 14, 2009

I have two words for Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank: FUCK YOU.

As New York Rep. Gerald Nadler prepares to introduce a bill as early as tomorrow to overturn the viciously homophobic Clinton-era Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which prohibits the Federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, Rep. Frank, the longest-serving, out gay member of Congress refuses to co-sponsor the bill.

Nadler first told the Bay Area Reporter that he intended to introduce a repeal bill and that the legislation would only affect same-sex marriages, not civil unions or domestic partnerships.

A “certainty provision” in the bill, Nadler said, would allow gay couples living in a state where marriage is not recognized to go to another state to marry and qualify for federal benefits when they return home.

Gay Reps. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Jared Polis (D-CO) will co-sponsor the legislation, but Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) hasn’t signed on in support, telling the Washington Blade he has a “strategic difference” with people supporting the repeal legislation:

“It’s not anything that’s achievable in the near term. I think getting [the Employment Non-Discrimination Act], a repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ and full domestic partner benefits for federal employees will take up all of what we can do and maybe more in this Congress.”

What Frank is really saying is, he planned to introduce his own DOMA repeal bill sometime next year, possibly in the spring. Thus allowing him to bask in the media glory and receive major kudos from the LGBT community. It’s a shame Barney Frank let his enormous ego get in the way of LGBT equality but the fact is, he’s not important to the process.

Barney Frank was also against the push for gay marriage in MA when it was clearly going to become a reality. He’s always a day late and a dollar short! Of course, you have to realize that this old queen cares more about his political power than the gay community and always has!

  2. VicoDANIEL says:

Christopher, Thanks for posting this. Somehow, I managed to miss this.

I have no use for Barney Frank. After the news came to light he was using his office as rentboy facility for hustlers, I wrote him off. He’s an embarrassment.

Then, there’s last year’s TARP scandal. He and Pelosi helped Bush, Paulson and Bernanke add $900 billion to the national debt to bail out Wall Street crooks.

You’re correct. Fuck Barney Frank. On the other hand, I’d rather kill myself than fuck him. He’s a frog.

  3. Harry says:

Our so-called “gay leaders.” What a joke. I wonder if Frank opposes recognition of Harvey Milk, too? We need better leaders.

  4. Rachel says:

Barney Frank is shameless. He should be standing with Tammy Baldwin and Jared Polis. I can’t stand him. Please, Massachusetts, vote him out of office. Gay equality is a bigger issue than Barney Franks widdle ego.

  5. Idaho Librul says:

    Better not wait, Congressman Frank!

If the Democrats lose control of the House in 2010, as many political scientists suggest is a possibility, does Frank think the GOP will line up to vote to repeal DOMA or DADT?

Get it done NOW, while the Democrats have a majority.

  6. DMason says:

Barney Frank is a worthless piece of shit. Everyone hates you and on top of that, you’re an ugly old puff.

  7. bradfrmphnx says:

His excuse is as lame as he is. What a worthless POS to come up with that bologna. I agree with Idaho Librul…get it done now Democrats. Strike while the iron is hot. The Democrats should be repealing all the rightwing bureaucracy that puts one group of people in a higher regard than another.

  8. Prairiedog says:

Idaho hit the nail on the proverbial head.

Do. It. Now. The Dems have a majority and at the rate things are going, this will likely change in Nov. 2010. This is the golden opportunity to get a true, progressive agenda accomplished.

  9. I smell a run for Ted Kennedy’s senate seat. Or maybe he’s just an asshole. Two suggestions.

  10. Chris says:

Gah, as liberal as I tend to be, some folks on the left simply amaze me with their blind ideological foolishness. DOMA repeal isn’t going to come within a football field’s length of passing anytime soon. Frank is well aware of it, as should everyone commenting here. Wasting our movement’s time and energy on a cause that we can’t win right now (DOMA repeal) when it distracts, damages, and delays the causes we can (DADT repeal and ENDA) is the absolute epitome of the very egoism folks here are accusing Frank of. To put a fruitless fight over fruitful one just because it makes us feel good is a betrayal of the very principles we’re fighting for!

  11. bradfrmphnx says:

    Chris…hide and watch.

  12. Jolly Roger says:

Barney Frank, is Barney Frank. There’s always been calculation on his part; he’s behaving no differently than he ever does. It is regrettable, but wholly in keeping with the way he does things.

Thanks Chris, and it is somewhat suspicious that he always wants to knock it down or back. Does he have a partner that maybe he doesn’t want the walk down the isle with?……mmmmmmmmmm
