Pat Buchanan: “This has been a country basically built by white folks”

Friday, July 17, 2009

I commend MSNBC for keeping Pat Buchanan around as a reminder of how far we’ve come in this country when it comes to how think about race and gender. Buchanan is a 1950’s baby — a time when white people were free to discriminate openly and well, proudly. He’s a dinosaur and needless to say, not keen on Sonia Sotomayor.

Watch Rachel Maddow ask why 108 out of the 110 United States Supreme Court justices have been white, Buchanan says the following:

“I think white men were 100% of the people who wrote the constitution, 100% of the people who signed the Declaration of Independence, 100% of the people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, probably close 100% of the people who died at Normandy. This has been a country basically built by white folks.”

What’s amazing about Buchanan’s performance here is, he actually believes what he is saying. His thinking is remarkably unevolved. If you want to see what the 1950’s were all about, watch this clip.

My take on this clip is, Buchanan sees the SCOTUS as the ultimate, most exclusive country club in the world and as with all country clubs, only the purest, whitest male elites need apply. I always wonder of Georgetown cringes anytime Buchanan touts the fact that he’s an alumni?

  2. Rachel says:

I worry when I see people refer to Pat Buchanan as “Uncle Pat.” This moniker lends a benign quality to his racism and it misses the point. Frankly, I wish MSNBC would fire him. Andrea Mitchell too. I don’t like either of them.

The three people on MSNBC who bother me the most are:

    1. Pat Buchanan
    2. Joe Scarborough
    3. Andrea Mitchell

Buchanan is the last, fully functional member of the Nixon administration. He’s a bigot, a racist and a homophobe.

Scarborough is a radical, rightwinger who killed a woman in his office in Pensacola and then buried the evidence and got away with murder.

Mitchell is married to Alan Greenspan and the couple vacation with the Cheneys in Wyoming. I seriously doubt she can be objective.

MSNBC can do better. Let them all go to FOX.

I watched this in utter disbelief yesterday at the crap Pat was spewing forth. This is heart and soul of what the GOP stands for now. Displayed in all its phobic and white racist glory for the nation to see and for us to shake our heads at.

As a good old white boy…I hang my head in shame for this way of thinking. But I am able to lift it up and look in the mirror knowing that only a very few follow this line of thought.

Pat couldn’t get fucked in prison by a hard up convict. So I’ll just leave it with me telling him to go fuck himself.

White men?? I thought America was made by Keebler Elfs! oooh….I get it! Pat Buchanan is a Keebler Elf!!

  7. .
Es verdad. Especialemente La California, El Tejas, y La Florida. Totalmente blanco. Como el culo del Buchanon, El Grande Culo Blanco.

  8. Robster says:

I’m not shocked by this. I’m just glad the rest of the nation has a chance to see the Pat Buchanan we know from his VDARE ramblings.

  9. Harry says:

Is Buchanan a member of the Virginia KKK???

  10. MacDaddy says:

Hey, Pat: Black slaves, cheap Chinese labor and working people built this country. We shook the trees and picked the fruit as you rich white boys sat on your front porches drinking.

  11. Brigadoon says:

Pat Buchanan is a Hitler apologist too. He isn’t warm and fuzzy and he isn’t very smart. I have to disagree with your assessment of MSNBC for keeping him on the payroll. I think MSNBC needs to dump him. Buchanan serves no rational purpose and I plan to write the head of MSNBC news and strongly suggest they give him his pink slip.

  12. libhomo says:

There was so much to react to in the lunatic’s rantings. Pat’s claim that Scalia is smarter than Sotomayor was truly bizarre.

  13. i guess pat thinks the slaves and women just came along for the ride on the backs of those hard working white guys.\

hey those slaves should feel lucky – at least those white guys thought they were 3/5 of a person!

oh yea – Normandy – no blacks need apply to those romantic french beaches

and the olympics – just one big affirmative action organization.

i was in stunned disbelief that even a jaded me could find someone this bigoted spewing Nazi hate on cable

  14. Jimmy says:

What’s so disingenuous of Pat is his assumption that seats on the Supreme Court have historically gone to legal geniuses. White men have been placed on SCOTUS for all sorts of reasons, not least of all, pure execution of power by the white guy in the oval office. Rachel is absolutely right when she referred to white men “gaming the system.” and Pat knows she’s right.

  15. Errrlord says:

It always amazes me when people say “uncle pat” is smart. Ignoring the blatant racism he also shows a degenarative willful ignorance which has become endemic in todays republican party. I really dont understand a party that can blindly support governor avon lady to be president and at the same time calling a prinston and harvard graduate, someone who passed the bar and has served as a federal judge for 17 years

  16. Wow. Just… wow.
