I commend MSNBC for keeping Pat Buchanan around as a reminder of how far we’ve come in this country when it comes to how think about race and gender. Buchanan is a 1950’s baby — a time when white people were free to discriminate openly and well, proudly. He’s a dinosaur and needless to say, not keen on Sonia Sotomayor.
Watch Rachel Maddow ask why 108 out of the 110 United States Supreme Court justices have been white, Buchanan says the following:
“I think white men were 100% of the people who wrote the constitution, 100% of the people who signed the Declaration of Independence, 100% of the people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, probably close 100% of the people who died at Normandy. This has been a country basically built by white folks.”
What’s amazing about Buchanan’s performance here is, he actually believes what he is saying. His thinking is remarkably unevolved. If you want to see what the 1950’s were all about, watch this clip.
