Bill Clinton Now Supports Gay Marriage

Thirteen years after signing the viciously homophobic “Defense of Marriage Act,” former President Bill Clinton now says he supports gay marriage.

When asked after a speech at the Campus Progress National Conference, Clinton opined:

“I personally support people doing what they want to do. I think it’s wrong for someone to stop someone else from doing that [same-sex marriage].”

Too bad Clinton didn’t have this moral clarity back in 1996 when he buckled to pressure from the religious right and signed DOMA into law.

Thanks for nothing, Bill.

    I detest Bill Clinton.

He’s a typical politician who is flush with courage after he leaves office and has nothing left to lose expect an appointment with a hooker or his left hand when Hillary is out of town and no one is looking.

    He’s a coward.

  2. Harry says:

Bill Clinton was in San Diego about a year ago at some event and I refused to go. I have no interest in anything he has to say. Especially, on gay rights.

  3. bradfrmphnx says:

Clinton hangs out with Bush Sr…..nuff said.

  4. stradella says:

    Well isn’t this just special?

Where is Clinton’s apology to the gay community for DOMA and DADT? Where did Clinton say he planned to use his influence on Capitol Hill to help get bills out for Obama to sign repealing and healing the damage DOMA and DADT has caused?

    Not a damned word. Crickets.

  5. Walk on Socks says:

Too bad Bill Clinton didn’t channel his wife’s idol, Eleanor Roosevelt. If he had he might have heard:

“You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

In 1996, this would’ve included refusing to sign the Defense of Marriage Act, just because it was easy.

  6. Brigadoon says:

Go fuck yourself, President Clinton. You sold us down the river and now we’re left to try to clean up your mess and gain our civil rights. I have no use for you, your wife or your daughter. Scram.

  7. Mauigirl says:

Agree with everyone – too little, too late, and what good does it do anyone now?

  8. joost says:

Clinton created the current policy of oppressing gay and lesbian Americans and now he has the gall to say he’s onboard supporting gay marriage?

I grew to dislike him in 1996, felt sorry for him in 1998, and started hating him last summer and fall in the primaries.

He needs to make speeches and just STFU.

  9. Didn’t like Bill Clinton then, don’t like him now. He only did two good things, Ginsburg and Breyer.

  10. PATRICK says:

AT LEAST HE SUPPORTS IT NOW. ITS BETTER THAN IF HE OPPOSED IT. IT WILL BE LEGAL EVERYWHERE ONE DAY VERY SOON. ITS REALLY SUCH A NON ISSUE,ISSUE. LEGALIZE IT & BE DONE WITH IT ALREADY. A NO BRAINER. THEN WILL COME POT BEING LEGAL.

  11. Roger says:

I was done with him after DOMA, DADT, and the way he threw Lani Guinier under the bus (hell, he practically threw her into the gutter). He is not an ally–and all the placating words that issue forth from him do nothing to sway me: bottom line, where was he when it mattered?
