Cheney Personally Oversaw at Least Four Congressional Briefings on Torture Program

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

No wonder Cheney spends his post-vice presidential days on TV defending the actions of the previous administration.

From the Washington Post:

Former vice president Richard B. Cheney personally oversaw at least four briefings with senior members of Congress about the controversial interrogation program, part of a secretive and forceful defense he mounted throughout 2005 in an effort to maintain support for the harsh techniques used on detainees.

The Cheney-led briefings came at some of the most critical moments for the program, as congressional oversight committees were threatening to investigate or even terminate the techniques, according to lawmakers, congressional officials, and current and former intelligence officials.

Cheney’s role in helping handle intelligence issues in the Bush administration — particularly his advocacy for the use of aggressive methods and warrantless wiretapping against alleged terrorists — has been well documented. But his hands-on role in defending the interrogation program to lawmakers has not been previously publicized.

Were any of them attended by Nancy Pelosi? Just wondering since the Speaker curiously claims she was out of the loop on the matter. You know what I think, I think we need hearings into who knew what and when. No more backtracking on torture. Let’s get to the bottom of this once and for all.

  2. Peace Nick says:

I’ve seen Cheney more often in 2009 than I saw him from 2000 to 2008.

He’s a constant fixture on cable news and in the print mainstream media.

He’s running scared. With good reason, too.

  3. Robster says:

Oversaw? I wouldn’t doubt it if he made many of the recommendations for the program.

Dick just can’t stay out of the news. His coverup campaign is having a numbing affect on his actions though. The more he spills everyday, the more used to it the public becomes. This is how he distances himself from his criminal activity.

People were tortured to death! And Cheney and Bush and the rest of those who had a hand in it, will get off scott free because Obama is a panty waste.

  5. Brigadoon says:

I keep seeing shorter Lynne Cheney, AKA, Liz Cheney on the cable news spewing garbage about what a fine and decent man her daddy is and how torture saved American lives. If I didn’t know better, I would think Liz Cheney is running for elected political office.

  6. Harry says:

Another Cheney in national politics? Between the Bushes and Cheneys, we will need a constitutional amendment to stop it from happening.

  7. Dmitris says:

There’s no doubt that Cheney was up to his balls in torture. Look in his eyes: he gets off on harming people. Harming people is like Viagra to him. Like most neocons, he has a screw missing in his wiring.

  8. Joaquin says:

Cheeeny belongs in a Federal prison.

He’s got the blood and skin of detainees rotting under his fingernails.

  9. Jim says:

Cheney is a criminal and should be charged as a criminal.
