As the Noose Tightens, Pelosi Heads to Iraq

They say in Washington DC, when a political storm threatens, just leave the country for a few days until the storm passes. But for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the storm surrounding her contradictory statements about when she was briefed by the CIA regarding enhanced interrogation techniques, AKA, torture, is only gathering strength.

This explains why Speaker Pelosi headed to Iraq to make a surprise one-day visit to Baghdad, ostensibly to discuss U.S.-Iraqi economic relations with Iraqi prime minister Prime Minister Nouri Maliki.

The issue centers around a 10-page CIA memo released last week on Capitol Hill (and reported on this blog) that outlines a nearly seven-year history of classified briefings which contradict Pelosi’s claims she was never told that the Bush administration was engaged in illegal torture of detainees. The CIA memo says then-Rep. Pelosi was one of the first two members of Congress to be briefed on harsh interrogation tactics as early as 2002. The other was then-Rep. Porter Goss.

The question of what Speaker Pelosi knew and when she knew it has become a matter of heated debate on Capitol Hill, as well as in the blogosphere. The topic reached the Sunday political TV chat shows this weekend where Pelosi found few supporters among either political party.

Pelosi has changed her story on this several times.

The first version had her knowing nothing about the Bush administration using torture techniques on detainees. Once the CIA memo hit Washington, she tweaked her story to say, she was briefed by the CIA but they said these measures “were only available to use, if needed.”

I think she’s potentially in a corner. Maybe she ought to stay in Baghdad until 2010? 😉

GMTA? I wondered why Pelosi would leave the country on Mother’s Day weekend too but, she’s a survivor and I expect she knew the topic of the Sunday TV programs.

There’s an interesting Wikipedia entry on this subject. Here is part of it:

In a 2002 briefing, while Pelosi was the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, she was told about enhanced interrogation techniques, including waterboarding.

Two unnamed former Bush Administration officials say that the briefing was detailed and graphic, and at the time she didn’t raise substantial objections. One unnamed U.S. official present during the early briefings said, “In fairness, the environment was different then because we were closer to September 11 and people were still in a panic.

But there was no objecting, no hand-wringing. The attitude was, ‘We don’t care what you do to those guys as long as you get the information you need to protect the American people.'”

Pelosi is the essence of a DINO and that’s all I need to know about her.

I have been to San Francisco several times and I have friends in the Bay Area. I am familiar with the political culture of the region. How this woman who refused to impeach George W. Bush for war crimes and crimes against humanity, still managed to be reelected by 70% of the voters in San Francisco, is a mystery as great of Roswell, NM.

HEY! She’s A MOM!! Cut her some SLACK!!!

In fact, as a good Italian Catholic, she has five kids & seven grandkids. This doesn’t hurt her with that crowd. She’s also one of the wealthiest people in Congress, and distributes campaign contributions to other Democratic candidates from her own war-chest. She got her seat through designation by the widow of the previous SF Congress-critter, and kept playing the sympathy vote until the nutso right-wing made her the poster-child for all things liberal, bad, gay, and San Francisco, which makes her Ms. Shakytown for life, back home. With her clout, it would be tough to undo her incumbency. Besides, she makes Feinstein look good. The feeling in Frisco is, anybody but a Republican, since 1949.

Now, what about YOUR Mom? LAST-MINUTE MOTHER’S DAY GIFTS!

ROFLMAO! Maybe the best blog picture of Pelosi I have ever seen! A 10! ^5^!

  6. MacDaddy says:

I’m no great fan of Pelosi, but even less a fan of the CIA or the FBI. And I really don’t the CIA or the FBI when they say they fully briefed Pelosi or leaders of congress on torture. Remember: the Bush administration was hiding everything as much as possible. Bush himself was saying America does not torture. I’d believe Pelosi before I would believe the CIA or FBI.

  7. Randy Arroyo says:

I’m no fan of the intelligence community either but, I’m not fan of the Speaker either. When she took impeachment off the table, I lost all respect I once had for her. So, Someone is telling the truth and that means someone isn’t. I can’t see any reason why the CIA would lobe a salvo at the Speaker of the House. It makes no sense. Am I missing something?

cosanostradamus: “She got her seat through designation by the widow of the previous SF Congress-critter”

It’s even worse than that. The endorsement was the end result of the then Waxman-Burton political machine recruiting her as their choice because they didn’t want SF to elect its first openly gay member of congress, then frontrunner Harry Britt. Pelosi ran a gay baiting campaign during the worst of the AIDS crisis to win the Democratic primary.

    @libhomo

Yeah. I wasn’t living in the Bay Area at the time, and I didn’t know all the details on her first race for Congress. Thanks for the update. The California girls in Congress certainly have a checkered history, don’t they? Well, you don’t get far in politics without being a bastard.

  10. Pelosi was every bit as involved in the decision to us EITs as were the GOP… but are now lying about it in an attempt to appease the antiwar left and fulfill specious campaign posturing.

And apparently Pelosi and Obama forgot something: the CIA kills people… it’s in their job description. Did these two really think that these killers were going to take-one-for-the-team… when the team captain is a lying, incompetent, arrogant nebbish who has basically told them they need to kiss his ring? -please

Obama really kicked an ant-hill with his ill-advised and politically-motivated release of Bush Administration memos regarding EITs.

Let’s have a hearing and get it all out there, shall we? Then watch the Democrat rats scatter who attacked Bush for protecting the country from terrorist attack… but who clearly knew what was going on five years before we heard a peep out of them.

Notice how the RRR (kind of like KKK) doesn’t call torture by its proper name.

  13. .
    Yeah.

“WELL HE DONE IT, TOO!!!” That’s the Repukelickin’ excuse for everything. it’s so puerile, and even less moral than, “I vas only vollowink OHDAS!”

We should dig up that phony back-stabbing draft-dodging hypocrital coward Raygun up and try his rotting corpse for war crimes in Central America in the 80’s.
