Pelosi: DOMA Repeal Not a Top Priority

Friday, April 17, 2009

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the Bay Area Reporter on Wednesday, that repealing the viciously homophobic, Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is not a top priority of hers right now.

The Speaker said that her two legislative priorities for the LGBT community are passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the Federal hate crimes bill; the latter was introduced in Congress earlier this month. She indicated action on those items would occur before any effort to repeal DOMA, which prohibits Federal recognition of same-sex relationships and allows states that do not provide equal rights to gay couples the ability to ignore such marriages granted in other states.

I have to wonder if all that Botox has seeped into Pelosi’s tiny brain? She seems clueless that two bills will address benefits being blocked by the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the viciously homophobic, 1996 Clinton-era law which defines marriage as a heterosexual union for the purpose of Federal agencies and allows states to ignore legal gay marriage.

Surprisingly, two senators, Joe Lieberman (I-CN) and Susan Collins (R-ME)  have joined two other members of Congress, Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL)  in sponsoring a measure that would extend marriage-like benefits to Federal employees. The bill is expected to be introduced next week.

Pelosi is weak as water. Why did San Francisco reelect her? She has no record to hold up. I don’t get it and I never will get it.

  2. MacDaddy says:

    I don’t know…

I’m in favor or the hate crimes bill coming up soon. New white hate groups are starting. And the ones already started are increasing rapidly.

I know part of their motivation is that they hate the fact that a black man is president. But they their filthy propaganda includes venom against gay people as well. I’m concerned about the possibility– no, the probability– of increased violence against blacks and gays this summer. Hopefully, a new hate crimes bill will be in effect by then.

  3. Jim says:

Benefits for gay and lesbian couples should come with no delay!

  4. Dmitris says:

Pelosi, who is an idiot and therefore just doesn’t get it, still thinks the American people love because she has a vagina and happens to also be the first female House speaker. In reality, she’s a clueless clown.

  5. Walk on Socks says:

How embarrassing for Pelosi that she has no idea about senate bills focused on LGBT issues like spousal benefits for Federal employees.

I realize the House and Senate are separate but still, how could she not know about the bills by Tammy Baldwin, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Joe Lieberman, and Susan Collins?

She must be a lost lamb on Capitol Hill.

  6. RealWorldRadical says:

What exactly do you guys think would have happened back then if DOMA hadn’t been enacted? Think hard.

  7. I continue to be appalled at the mediocrity of our political class. I have nothing else to say.

  8. Gleneagle says:

Nancy Pelosi owes her political fortunes to two things:

    1. marrying wealth
    2. Phil and Sala Burton

Were it not for these two things, she would be back in San Francisco, attending the opening of the opera and participating in charity fundraisers.

I’m not the least bit surprised she can’t multi-task and focus on passing a hate crimes bill and repealing DOMA. After all, this is a woman who told PBS’ Charlie Rose, “impeachment is off the table,” after it came to light that George Bush had violated the Constitution and engaged in torture.

  9. feminazi says:

RealWorldRadical – What exactly do you think has happened since DOMA was enacted? Think hard. If you need help connecting the dots, just ask. DOMA is a Clinton-era embarrassment but it’s the one thing the religious right says they thank Clinton for every day.

  10. So many things off the table with this yokel.
