Today, Vermont lawmakers:
“Overrode a veto from the state’s Republican governor in passing a bill that would allow same-sex marriage, clearing the way for the state to become the fourth in the nation where gay marriage is legal.”
Vermont’s vote comes just four days after Iowa’s Supreme Court struck down a decade-old law preventing gays from marrying to make that state the first in the U.S. heartland to allow same-sex marriages.
Congratulations Vermont. Giant California could learn a valuable lesson from tiny Vermont.
One state at a time.
I watch on TV when gay couples here the news that they can get married. I see the sheer joy and love in their eyes, when they look at their partner with the realization that they will be made whole in the eyes of society. And I am touched by that love and devotion.
Then I see stories on TV where they are recieving the news that the bill or ruling they were hoping for has failed. I see the forlorn looks of broken hearted dismay. And that makes me want to kick some sanctimonious ass!
It may take a while, but this is the way it’s going to get done: folks coming to their senses and respecting everyone’s rights to be who they are, as long as it does not hurt anyone else.
And DC is going to recognize other states’ gay marriages:
Washington Post: D.C. Council Votes to Recognize Other States’ Gay Marriages
Well, Yippy Kay-Yeah! There’s hope for this country yet.
Slowly but surely, more and more progressive agendas will come to fruition. It is up to each of us to be vigilant and be vocal supporters or detractors as the case warrants. By the way, Christopher, Left of Centrist is back in business.
I am taken aback by Vermont and the leadership they’ve shown on gay marriage equality. This is wonderful news. Too bad is snows there or I might consider relocating. One question? No Mormon effort to spoil things? I’m stunned.
I am pleasantly surprised by both Iowa and Vermont. Add in DC, and maybe we are seeing a wave? Time for NJ to step up to marriage (they have civil unions now), then NY, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, etc. It’s coming.
Vermont elected a Republican governor? Now, tell me, how the hell did this happen? Won’t people ever learn? Republicans are always trouble on social issues like gay marriage. None the less, high five to Vermont.
