Gay Rights Leader to Boycott Inauguration over Rick Warren

Saturday, December 20, 2008

The leader of California’s largest gay rights group says he will skip Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony to protest the participation of the Pastor Rick Warren, who Obama invited to perform the inugural invocation.

Warren, you will recall, used his Saddleback megachurch to help the Mormons successfully pass Proposition 8 — the antigay marriage initiative in California.

Equality California Executive Director Geoffrey Kors says the choice is “extremely disappointing and hurtful” given Warren’s support for Proposition 8.

Obama arrogantly defended his decision to invite Warren in a news conference Thursday.

Barney Frank should boycott too, but he always panders to heterosexist Democrats.

  2. Herman says:

So heterosexuals don’t have any rights in America?

  3. feminazi says:

Herman – Actually, we straights have all the rights in the USA. Gay people are still fighting for parity and equality. You might want to do some reading on the topic otherwise you just sound ignorant.

  4. Walk on Socks says:

I had planned to attend an inaugural party here in California but I got an email yesterday saying the party had been cancelled in response to Rick Warren.

What a shame. All that good will down the toilet.

  5. Estacada says:

My great hope is, everyone in attendance stand and shows their back to Rick Warren when he gives the invocation.

Then begin a chorus of loud boos.

  6. Inviting Rick Warren to speak at the Presidential inauguration is tantamount to inviting O.J. Simpson to speak at a women’s shelter.

Evan Wolfson guesstimates we will have Federal Marriage Equality in about 30 years (which would almost certainly require equality in employment and the military also).

So we need to either EMBRACE the fact that most of us over 40 will NOT see Full Federal Equality in our lifetime and remain “patient” as our civil rights crawl to the finish line…- OR – We could begin to TREAT the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT as it treats US.

    Two American Myths:

    * Equal Protection Under the Law (except for gays)
    * Separation of Church & State (except when the law applies to gays or a woman’s womb)

When Obama invited this “christian” to his speak at his inauguration, he invited a man who believes the Q-community are INFERIOR; “less than”. Let’s quit sugar-coating these turds! Being asked to “respect other’s opinions” doesn’t fly when those “opinions” are harmful lies about an entire segment of the population. Those “opinions” are tantamount to the extremely offensive beliefs and ideas our country once had about “negros” and “wives”, words and ideas that would NEVER FLY TODAY at an inauguration. Words and ideas that would incite riots today.

  7. Peace Nick says:

Barack Obama personally invited Rick Warren to perform the inaugural invocation.

    Warren is, anti-gay, anti-choice, pro-assassination.

Why is reaching Barack Obama elevating this man to such visibility?

It’s wrong. Obama’s wrong. Uninvite him before it’s too late.

  9. Two years ago, in the cold of Springfield, Illinois, a black man stood before a microphone, symbolically emulating Abe Lincoln and called on the country to change the politics of Washington ;and he announced he would do this as he pronounced clearly and loudly that he was placing his hat in the ring for the presidency of the United States.
Two years later, the same man, as president-elect- announced that he alone, without consultation, without input and advice from advisers and colleagues and friends and contributors, chose to have a racist, anti-Lincoln, anti-Martin Luther King symbol to invoke his administration. This he does, as he rescinds his support of the LGBT community, Human rights campaigns. He dishonors his mantrix for running- changing the political habits of Washington’s leaders.
In an irrevocable blunder, the merchandise he presented to the American people has gone broke and busted, has foreclosed before it ever began.
So, are the stories of this man’s ambition, elitism, arrogance, hypocrisy, insidious mockery and homophobia–true?
Maintaining and sustaining and projecting the current status quo in Washington dealings has been the program he has delivered to date as president-elect.
The sense of trust lost in the Bush administration, in our financial institutions, in the institutions overseeing institutions, in the open waste of monies from the federal budget, the renegade dealings on wall street, the unfair tax system, the ruinous health insurance policies, now include the renegade actions of a man who cannot help but create substantial nationwide tension between church and state, as he sabotages his future political career (like Nixon with Watergate) by abandoning overtly, rudely and cruely the humanitarian voters who so forcefully shed blood sweat and tears and personal needed funds to a man who now mirrors political fraud.
I have written to his liaisons to the gay community as well as to the ceo of the inauguration committee. I have received no response.
Is there any politician, any elected official who will defend Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln at this time— as their legacies are besmirched
and dimmed by the PASTOR Big Daddy of America’s right wing?
I call on all Faithful Americans, to protest Big Daddy’s function at the Inauguration. And I hold obama and his team responsible for their demise at this time.
Power corrupts. And so quickly to those who never knew it. Those who can not handle it.
Those who have suffered fro it , yet have not the courage or the intelligence to reach beyond.
The celebration parties are canceled. The cheers are fake. The clouds are heavy.
His smug face, which we viewed prior to the New Hampshire primary has re-emerged.
The huge rallies vanish—-now mere footnotes to history.
God save this great nation of ours–elliot bassman
