Meet the Press Meets Irrelevance

Sunday, December 7, 2008

NBC’s Meet the Press, the venerable Sunday morning political blab program was rocked to its foundation by the untimely death of longtime host Tim Russert in June.

The network was forced to quickly scrambled to find a replacement — albeit a temporary one, in retired, veteran news anchor Tom Brokaw.

Today, nearly 6 months after Russert’s passing, the rumor was confirmed: NBC’s news division is handing the reigns of Meet the Press over to David Gregory.

Gregory, a lightweight White House reporter and Washington gadfly, is best known for prancing around the stage with Karl Rove at the 2007 Radio and Television Correspondents Association dinner while Rove performed his now infamous (and some said racist) “MC Rove” rapper shtick.

If I hadn’t seen it here, I would thought this was some sort of joke.

David Gregory? He’s even sorrier than Joe Scarborough. I can’t believe it.

Tim Russert must be rolling over in his grave today.

  2. R.J. says:

I’ve heard about this rumor for quite some time. I’m not up early enough in the morning to watch it, so for me it’s not a big deal.

David Gregory is an intellectual lightweight that probably is more suited for the fourth hour of the Today show.

  3. Elvis Lives says:

David Gregory spent the entire primary pushing Hillary Clinton and badmouthing Barack Obama.

He never missed a chance to say something negative about Obama. I understand Gregory is jewish and Hillary Clinton is the darling of the motherland but he was off the hook for Clinton last spring and over the summer.

  4. Ulysses Washed Ashore says:

Excellent news! Now I have no excuse to jog an extra mile Sunday morning then take in a cup of coffee at Starbuck’s afterward.

  5. Stradella says:

I wasn’t offended by MC Rove and his posse of David Gregory because I consider the source.

They’re just two, stupid straight white men.

  6. Big Hank says:

Chuck Todd or Rachel Maddow would have been far better picks, IMHO. I always thought David Gregory was headed to FOX. He’s hardly suited to follow in Tim Russert’s footsteps.

  7. Winnie H. says:

When David Gregory danced on that stage with Karl Rove, he immediately lost all credibility with me. I haven’t watched anything he’s done since then, and I don’t trust his reporting. What more accurate symbol of where Gregory stands than to see him publicly “backing up” the likes of Rove.

Any reporter with even an ounce of integrity would have refused to share the stage with Rove.

NBC really blew it with this selection. We can only hope that the ratings will tank, and they will be forced to replace him with someone better, like Rachel Maddow.

  8. D.R.Scott says:

    I don’t care.

Not for nothing, but I’ve haven’t watched TV news for quite a long time. Over in Europe, at least people are honest and perceptive enough to define their talking heads as “news readers“. I get my news from either online or from newspapers and magazines. The pseudo-news broadcast on television is biased, dumbed down, conservative, and dishonest, so I won’t waste my time watching nonsense.

David Gregory is just another tool owned by his corporate overlords, so what difference does it make? Other than Olbermann and Maddow (who I watch online anyway), all the rest of them are liars.
I haven’t forgot their complicity in the Iraq war, after all, and if they’re not going to be indicted for war crimes, than the letter “N” should be tattooed on their foreheads before they’re exiled on a desert
island in the middle of nowhere.

    Who cares?

When David Gregory danced on that stage with Karl Rove, he immediately lost all credibility with me.

Bingo. Gregory’s behavior on-stage was a tacit endorsement of Rove’s racism. Not cool.

    Screw him and screw NBC.

  10. Brigadoon says:

David Gregory looks like an organ grinder’s monkey. He’s too simian to face first thing Sunday morning and I will not be tuning in to watch MTP with him as host. A horrible choice. I think NBC will dump him within a year.

  11. Arizona Leatherneck says:

I rarely watch Meet the Press.

I have a life, so my weekends are precious and I have better things to do than waste an hour I will never get back in front of the TV.

  12. JollyRoger says:

Russert, though a nice guy, definitely softballed any Chimpy officials or flunkies he had on. Brokaw, of course, has made no secret of his sympathy for the wingtards. Looked at through a chronological lens, Gregory is perfect for the job.

I don’t watch MSM bullshit anyway. Rachel and Keith are about all the MSM I can stand to watch.

  13. Conejo1982 says:

I’m sure David Gregory blew the executive board of General Electric, then the NBC News division.

He’s the male version of Eve Harrington from All About Eve.

He will make Meet the Press about as important as a segment on GolfTV.

  14. Dick Small says:

I danced with Karl Rove once. That guy was all hands, btw….

  15. yep – dont even watch it

  16. Rachel says:

NBC is obviously pandering to older, white men, who they think David Gregory appeals to. I thought PBS’ Gwen Ifill was qualified and would’ve signaled a real chance in direction for the stodgy old program.

  17. libhomo says:

Tim Russert was just as much of a lightweight as Gregory. Russert also was a partisan GOP hack. Gregory can’t be worse than Russert was.
