The Borg Queen Eyed for State

Friday, November 14, 2008

Two Obama advisers have told NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell that Hillary Clinton is on the short-list to be Secretary of State in the new Obama administration. She was even seen taking a flight to Chicago yesterday, although an aide claimed the trip was for “personal business.”

The Washington Post hears the same buzz and notes the pick “would go a long way toward healing any remaining divisions within the Democratic Party after the divisive primaries. Also, Clinton has long been known for her work on international women’s issues and human rights. The former first lady could also enhance Obama’s efforts to restore U.S. standing amongst allies worldwide.”

Clinton, considered by many to be a neocon in a pantsuit, is a curious choice for state. Throughout the primary, she was highly critical of rival Barack Obama, even suggesting all he brings to the table is “a speech,” a back-handed swipe at Obama’s 2004 Democratic National Convention speech, and suggested his commitment to diplomacy with Iran and Pakistan was “naive.”

  1. TOM339 says:

    Don’t send her to Bosnia.

Everytime Hillary is in Bosnia, something in the air and water compels her to invent fanciful yarns about dodging bullets and sniper fire.

It could be very embarrassing for the new, Obama administration to send her to that part of the world.

  2. Harry says:

I thought her focus is children and healthcare? Why is it the Clintons just refuse to go quietly into the sunset like every other washed up politician?

  3. Rachel says:

When I heard this, I thought oh no, a new chapter in the Clinton saga is about to unfold. But, who knows? Maybe it would be a good thing? Hillary is a very angry woman and it might be fun to see her in the Octagon with Ahmadinejad or Medvedev. I always thought Hillary would make a better Attorney General.

  4. D.R.Scott says:

Uh, I’m not Clinton’s biggest fan, but I don’t share your misgivings. Whatever else the former First Lady might be, she’s not incompetent, and having smart people in this administration is necessary. I also think that despite her rightward leanings, Clinton is too good a politician not to sense which way the wind is blowing.

(By the way, I must respectfully disagree with the “Hillary Bitch” graphic. I think it’s sexist, and it makes me uncomfortable.)

Besides, this sounds like one of those “back door” deals. During the brutal primary wars, there’s a possibility that Obama promised Clinton this opportunity if she and the Big Dawg would support him afterwards.

Yeah, it bothers me, but that’s politics, ain’t it?

  5. DCVET says:

If true, what happens to Hillary’s vacated New York state senate seat? Would Gov. David Patterson appoint a replacement or would they have to hold a special election? Everything I read says John Kerry is jockeying for State and Kerry was an early and vocal Obama supporter. I think he’s owed the job.

  6. stradella says:

    The “Borg Queen.”

Oh, Christopher, that is too funny. But yep, you hit the nail on the head again. Hillary Clinton does look like the Borg Queen.

Personally, I detest her and after the racism she and the Clenis doled out in the primary directed at Barack, I can’t forgive her and I don’t trust her.

  7. Jenna Bush Stole My ID says:

    Hillary as Secretary of State?

I thought former president Bill Clinton was already Secretary of State?

  8. Gizmo says:

Works for me. Hillary’s a tough bird.
She’ll serve Obama and the country well.

  9. Walk on Socks says:

I’m over the Clintons but one thing we should stop and consider.

Much of the world loves them and Hillary, if this rumor is true, will be in a position to tap into the goodwill the world feels for the Clintons and this will help the U.S. enormously. Especially, in the many hot spots of the world.

  10. Country Girl says:

Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State?

No, no, no, no, no, no, no! Bill Richardson is better plus he’s a Hispanic.

  11. JollyRoger says:

I’m with D.R. Scott on this one.

However I might perceive her as a person, she probably would be far from the worst SoS we ever had. She’d probably be pretty good at the job, actually.

  12. R.J. says:

Bill Richardson for Secretary of State. End of story.

  13. I am sort of ambivalent about this. I mean, I don’t dislike her as a politician especially, I just don’t really like her as a person. I find her too cold and shrewd.

  14. Estacada says:

A highly placed Democratic official was quoted anonymously on our local PSB radio station that Hillary Clinton had a four hour meeting with President-elect Barack Obama Thursday to discuss her role in the new administration and that role is Secretary of State.

    Think about the dynamics.

The only way Obama could win the support of Bill Clinton in the final weeks of the campaign was to reward his wife with a high-profile, important cabinet position. Even then, Bill Clinton looked at Obama with disgust.

It’s a done deal, ladies and gentlemen. Hillary Clinton IS Obama’s Secretary of State. Sorry to John Kerry and Bill Richardson, who are both uniquely qualified in my view.

  15. Seymour Butts says:

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has actual foreign policy credentials.

    Hillary Clinton is a pain-in-the-ass.

    John Kerry is a douche.

So, who does Barry select? Not a good choice, Barry.

  16. Elvis Lives says:

    An most excellent choice!

Then Gov. Patterson can appoint a superior senator to fill Hillary’s senate seat, who will actually work for the people of New York and not go off for 20 months and run for president. The sooner Hillary is gone from office, the better for New York.

And please spare me any flaming. She hasn’t done a fucking thing for New York in 8 years in the senate.

  17. names4things says:

    Aw hell.

  18. LaPuma2008 says:

    “Borg Queen.”
    “very angry woman”
    “a pain-in-the-ass”

Staggering, profoundly inappropriate and highly sexist language from a blog clearly committed to undermining the most powerful woman in America.

Sen. Clinton is infinitely more qualified than either Gov. Richardson or Sen. Kerry. It’s unfortunate the Hillary-haters can’t see this.

If Obama really goes through with this and makes Sen. Clinton his Secretary of State, I will temper my opinion of him which heretofore has been lowly at best.

  19. Bill Hussein O'Reilly says:

LaPuma2008 – you forgot to mention she’s fat.

  20. Arizona Leatherneck says:

Hillary’s only been slightly more effective in the US Senate than was Liddy Dole so her departure won’t be felt at all.

In fact, I’m looking forward to seeing who the governor of New York replaces her with.

  21. MacDaddy says:

If she is appointed as Secretary of State, it would
a reward to her for her support of Obama and doing about 60 speeches for him. She spent a lot of time stumping for him in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana, all places Obama won. Bill Richardson would be the best for the position hands down, but Obams owes her. If she wants the position, she’ll get it.

  22. Aunt Peg says:

    Obama doesn’t “owe” Hillary anything.

He paved the groundwork for McCain and Palin to travel during the primary about Bill Ayers and Billary played the race card in S. Carolina as bad as any tobacco-spittin’ southern gentleman.

I hope it isn’t true. Obama deserves better.

  23. lea-lea says:

I’m confused. I thought Sen. Clinton’s focus was children and healthcare? How can she realize these goals if she’s flying around the planet, attending teas and dinners and meeting with heads of state?

    It makes no sense.

  24. i actually think she would be thatbad in this job — but i dont see her working for obama. plus there are better choices.

as bad as she was to obama during the primary – he does need to keep her as an ally, that is just the way politics goes. to me it is much more important to dump lieberman

  25. HelenWheels says:

I agree with those who find the pic w/the word “bitch” sexist and I also find it offensive.

I don’t think Hillary is a good choice. I’d like to see NO Clintons anywhere near the WH ever again.

I agree she’s a neocon in a pantsuit. I also don’t think she has it in her to just cooperate with Obama. She’s way too power-hungry.

  26. As an early Obama supporter and not a really big fan of Hillary I will offer my worthless two cents.

    1. The graphic without the word “Bitch” would have looked better. (I myself had some pretty harsh words for her in the Primary, but it was over months ago and she did step up and actually campaign for him.)

    2. As SoS this would keep her out of DC for a large portion of time. This would mean that she would not be in the senate potentially working back room deals to sabotage him.

    3. Lincoln pulled in all of his rivals into his cabinet to keep an eye on them.

At the end of the day she is not my first pick, Richardson would have been better or Kerry. Let’s stop busting his balls and realize that Governing is completely different that Campaigning. Folks we won, now is not the time to gloat.

  27. Prairiedog says:

I think the “bitch” moniker is well earned.

During the primary, Clinton sat on the panel and praised herself (no surprise there) and then praised her good friend, John McCain, and said he was more qualified to be president than Barack Obama.

I’m offended to think Obama may reward her with an important cabinet spot as Secretary of State after her campaign antics. In fact, Hillary deserves the moniker “c**t.”

  28. Brigadoon says:

I don’t how the rumor is playing out on cable news but on local news, they pundits keep saying “Obama owes Clinton for her post-primary support.” Can someone explain this? I think the opposite is true. If Obama doesn’t offer Hillary the job, where does she go? I’ll tell you: back to the Congress as New York’s junior senator. If anything, Hillary owes Obama.

  29. Randy Arroyo says:

The Clintons are like the plague. They just won’t go away. No matter what happens, no matter how the voters cast their ballots, their addiction to the halls of power knows no limits. I’m just sure in 10 years we will be dealing with Chelsea’s first run for the NY state assembly.

  30. Conejo1982 says:

It was my understanding in order to be considered for a job in the Obama administration you had to complete a 70 page questionaire?

If true and if Hillary is honest, how would she pass muster on the issue of finances? Everyone knows a sizable portion of the Clintons $110 million dollar fortune came from business and lobbying deals with shady characters from Central Asia and Saudi Arabia.

  31. Fran says:

Sec of State is a very sensitive position & the word has had to deal with Condi Rice. Who has done a *heck-of-a-job* trying to tell OTHER countries what they can & can’t do, or how they should handle things, based on the US model? She was the laughing stock of the international community.

I think Hillary burned the bridge when she played the race card & the assassination card during the primaries.

Put her on the Sex Offender commission… it might help with personal/family matters too.

  32. libhomo says:

Randy: “The Clintons are like the plague. They just won’t go away.” LMAO

I’ve always likened the Clintons and the Bushes to cancers, but the plague works too.

General comment: Clinton is too pro-war. Richardson is more qualified and less jingoistic.

  33. Jim says:

Like vampires, the Clintons never die.

  34. feminazi says:

As a woman, a Jew and a liberal, I’m not offended in the least by calling Hillary a “bitch.” She is a bitch and much worse. Remember, this is the same person who tried to get MSNBC’s David Shuster fired for asking, “Are the Clintons pimping out Chelsea in this campaign.” This is the same person who dispatched her husband to use racist tactics against Barack Obama in South Carolina. Hillary is a bitch and I hope she doesn’t work for Obama’s new administration.

  35. Jamal says:

Bill and Hillary Clinton are race baiters.

I had heard this about them but I just chalked it up to GOP smears about the couple. But the primary pulled back the curtain and revealed them to be just as ugly as many said they were.

  36. Woodcliffe says:

Barack Obama ran one of the best orchestrated, tightly controlled and highly disciplined campaigns ever.

No drama; no slip-ups; and no leaks.

The second the Bitch from Chappaqua entered the scene, the story she was in contention for Secretary of State managed to unravel the Obama brand and her name was leaked to the MSM.

This is precisely the sort of thing we have to look forward to if Hillary is Obama’s choice. Drama, slip-ups and leaks. Please, whatever President-elect Obama does, don’t make Billary Secretary of State.

  37. toddyenglish says:

I think he would prefer Bill Richardson. But he does owe the borg queen for contributing her followers…

    haha@ The Borg Queen…LOL.

  38. Joe in Colorado says:

Virtually every cable news channel is breathlessly gorging on Hillary Clinton this morning. What won’t this woman do to steal attention from our new president-elect? I never realized it until the the 2008 primary but the Clintons, Bill and Hill, are addicted to public attention. They live for it. It sustains them. A terrible choice for Secretary of State. Bill Richardson is more qualified and did more to help Obama win the election.

  39. Matteo says:

    Gov. Bill Richardson:

    Governor of New Mexico.
First Hispanic candidate for the 2008 Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States.
Involved in several diplomatic efforts as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
    Former U.S. Representative.
    Former U.S. Secretary of Energy.
Former chairman of the 2004 Democratic National Convention
Former Chairman of the Democratic Governors Association in 2005 and 2006.
Nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the release of hostages, American servicemen, and political prisoners in North Korea, Iraq, and Cuba.

Gov. Bill Richardson is most definitely the more qualified candidate to serve as Obama’s Secretary of State.

Sen. Hillary Clinton has fable about Bosnia and a pantsuit.

  40. Nan Yun says:

    Thank you, Matteo.
This list of qualifications is informative. It certainly looks like Richardson is the better candidate for Secretary of State.

  41. Now she can’t run for President. Remember that picture of her kissing Obama on the lips. That won’t work in Kentucky and West Virginia.

  42. I think it’s better to have her on his side.Like her or hate her you have to agree, she is one tough mother you know what.I hate to be on her shitlist.

  43. Adirondacky says:

Bill Richardson is the highest-ranking Hispanic in the Democratic Party. He was a tireless defender of, and spokesperson for, President-elect Obama throughout the primary. Richardson is qualified by professional experience and temperament to serve the American people. If Obama passes over him and gives the Secretary of State job to Hillary Clinton, it will be a profound betrayal.

  44. retahyajyajav says:

Obama is smart. He’s practicing the art of keeping his friends close and his enemies closer. He knows Hillary is a devious bitch and he needs to keep her on a short leash.

  45. Tiny Dancer says:

I would like to see HRC gone from the senate.

Patterson could appoint a superior person, maybe a gay or lesbian replacement to fill the Borg Queen’s shoes.

  46. VicoDANIEL says:

I hope Obama selects the Borg Queen.

She’ll be out of the country half the time and he can replace her with a better senator.

As a New Yorker, I can’t point to a single thing Clinton has done for this state.
