Voter intimidation has reared its ugly head in African American neighborhoods in Philadelphia.
An anonymous flier circulating in African-American neighborhoods in North and West Philadelphia states that voters who are facing outstanding arrest warrants or who have unpaid traffic tickets may be arrested at the polls on Election Day.
Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Everett Gillison, who learned of the flier last week, said that the message is completely false.
“The only thing that police officers are going to do that we’ll be encouraging that day is that they’ll be exercising their own individual right to vote,” Gillison said.
He plans to put up statements on the city and police Web sites to let citizens know that the handouts are false. He said that he also will record a public-service announcement for broadcast.
Gillison referred the matter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the district attorney.
“We are not going to stand for any intimidation of voters,” Gillison said. “Not in this city.”
You can almost smell the desperation of the GOP as the election gets closer. If they can’t win fair and square, they will engage in voter intimidation to alter the outcome of the race. They’re beneath contempt to me.
2000 saw some of the most egregious examples of voter suppression.
In several counties in Florida with large African American populations, state troopers magically appeared on election day and began stop checking drivers for proper registration, insurance and possession of a valid drivers license.
Longtime residents reported they had never seen any such checkpoints in 40 and 50 years of living in Florida. The checkpoints created long lines of traffic that resulted in hundreds and perhaps, thousands of voters unable to reach their voting place before the doors closed.
If the margin is wafer thin on the side of McCain, I’ll be über — sorry, Godwin — curious as to how much fight the Dems have.
I hope that Field knows that they’re going to contest Philly’s “walking around money”.Ken Whitewell,(who lives in Washington now because Ohio brothers hate him)is going after every black organization in Ohio for voter fraud. It’s bad.
Hey Cutty ,
Go to newshounds.us (cuz I know you hate FOX )to see what’s up.Every mother fuckin’ day they have Whitewell talking about ACORN. Google Rod Parsley and Blackwell. That’s the shyte.
The DNC needs to be on this fast and nip it in the bud on election day. But first, people need to get out into the community and make sure voters know this is untrue and an attempt by the Republicans to steal the election.
Just like Florida all over again. If they can’t win it, they will steal it.
The only positive thing to be said about the republicans is that they’re predictable especially when it comes to trying to steal and dissuade voters.
This is disgusting.
I remember marching for civil rights back in the early 1960’s in Richmond, VA. I was just married and full of idealism. I thought we could change the world and in many ways, we did.
Vote intimidation can’t be allowed to return.
Funky ugly tactics- they’re baaaaack.
I hope they catch whomever did it…. would that be a Felony?
Thanks Christopher for staying on top of things and getting information out. The GOP has nothing left to fall back on. I am expecting any day for Bin Laden to show up so McCain can go and capture him and be the hero.
DON’T BE INTIMIDATED
You’d better fight to get your vote
And make it to the polls–
The Tricky Dicks know ways by rote
To strand you on the shoals.
There are all kind of threats to keep
You far away from casting
Your ballot: if you fall asleep
The stigma may be lasting.
Get out and vote: what you have heard
May not have factual basis–
Demand your right, as registered,
And fear not angry faces.
Unto the last, it’s do or die–
The right itself is threatened
To vote or not. Democracy
Has not a simple patent.
Remember great events have been
Decided by one action,
A single vote: nor as they win
Give cheaters satisfaction.
They will pretend, intimidate
And lie to keep you worried:
Express your right, it cannot wait
Nor be by pressure flurried.
Democracy will do or die:
The right but comes by risk,
And right makes might, but chance passed by
Come consequences brisk.
