Olbermann and Matthews No Longer Anchoring

Monday, September 8, 2008

Buckling to criticism from the rightwing, and more specifically, the McCain camp, the grand experiment of having Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews together anchor the election coverage has officially come to an end.

The New York Times reports:

After months of accusations of political bias and simmering animosity between MSNBC and its parent network NBC, the channel decided over the weekend that the NBC News correspondent and MSNBC host David Gregory would anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night. Mr. Olbermann and Mr. Matthews will remain as analysts during the coverage. The change — which comes in the home stretch of the long election cycle — is a direct result of tensions associated with the channel’s perceived shift to the political left.

NBC, the parent company of MSNBC, went limp after McCain’s vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, whined about media bias during her speech and attendees of the Republican convention loudly chanted “NBC.” The Olbermann/Matthews anchor team will be replaced by the anti-Obama, pro-McCain mouthpiece, David Gregory. The change should smooth the feathers of the McCain campaign.

So, I suggest the place to watch the remainder of the election coverage is C-SPAN. I hope MSNBC’s viewer numbers tank to the point they can’t be measured by the Neilsen tracking service.

As I understand it, Countdown with Keith Olbermann is the only MSNBC program that draws viewers and makes NBC money. They had better tread lightly or Keith can take his brand anywhere he wants once his contract is up in 2010.

  2. Peace Nick says:

So McCain and McCandy whine and NBC jumps?

I’ll be curious to hear what Keith has to say about his cowardly bosses tonight as I’m certain he’s working on a Special Comment as I type.

NBC is a minstrel show. Too bad Keith can’t take his program elsewhere.

  3. feminazi says:

Whine is right. I’m so tired of the Republicans whining about liberal media bias. Do they think we’re stupid? Turn on cable news. It’s 98% pro-conservative and anti-liberal. The talking heads fawn over McCain and Palin while treating Obama and Biden like they’re dirty. I really detest NBC after this stunt.

  4. retahyajyajav says:

Oh, I’m not the least bit surprised by this shake-up.

Remember, MSNBC is owned by NBC and NBC is owned by General Electric. GE is one of the leading players in the military, industrial complex.

GE is uniformly conservative and pro-war. The fact that Keith Olbermann has a program at all is remarkable. I guess Rachel Maddow had better go easy on the McCain/Palin ticket or her new program may get pulled before it has a chance to build an audience.

  5. Bill Hussein O'Reilly says:

Explains why Joe and Mika perform cunnilingus on Sarah Palin each morning.

And I thought they just liked the taste of Alaskan pussy? It’s called job security.

  6. Aunt Peg says:

    No Keith?

Fine. I’ll watch PBS coverage. Cable news can suck it.

  7. R.J. Lebeau says:

Fuck the peacock. Oh, wait. That didn’t come out right.

Fuck the Republicans. Okay, that’s much better.

No Keith or Chris? Well no reason to watch anymore!

  10. Jazzy says:

    @Bill Hussein O’ Reilly LMAO

  11. i guess it is on now

  12. Jim says:

How fucking unbelievable! I guess FOX is not too right wing though. It’s never a problem to go
    ape-shit right wing.

  14. Scott Dancer says:

How unfortunate for Rachel Maddow whose TV program begins this week.

She will no doubt now have to walk on eggshells or risk offending Johnny “Keating Five” McCain and Sarah “Immaculate Conception” Palin and the legions of lemming followers.

Someone once said, “America is a conservative country.” I balked when I heard this but now I’m not so sure they weren’t correct. This nation is drfting further to right each election cycle and NBC’s decision to cave to the RNC convention is proof of it.

  15. Harry says:

I’d like to see Keith go elsewhere. How about PBS? He would be free to say whatever he pleases then.

  16. Estacada says:

Keith Olbermann is a hot property.

Why not CNN? They don’t have a true, liberal voice anchoring an hour program. Sure, they have Cafferty, who asks views to email opinions but he’s not Keith Olbermann.

Keith on CNN would be a welcome relief to the idiots they have on their now like Campbell Brown and Anderson Cooper.

  17. Adirondacky says:

Just heard on KABC. Keith WILL address this matter tonight on Countdown. The brass at NBC should be afraid, very afraid. If he asks his fans to turn on the network, NBC may live to regret this.

  18. Winnie H. says:

Keith and Rachel are the only reason I watched MSNBC coverage of the primaries and the convention. I’ll be switching to C-Span. In fact, I’ve decided that I’ll be boycotting the network except for the 2 hours that their shows are on in the evening.

I have a feeling that we can’t even begin to understand how hard it has been for them to be the truthtellers on this network. Their courage and patriotism is stunning.

  19. enigma4ever says:

We Need Contact Information at MSNBC- the Neocons raised a Stink – we need to raise a Stink back- otherwise it will be the 2000 Election Night Coverage all over again when tom brokaw sat there and said Oh – well- it must be Bush- we can raise a BIGGER stink- we just need to organize HOW and WHO we yell at- and folks – it matters- they are going to try to steal another election ( just like they say McCain got 39 mill viewers and the polls are close) Come on we need to fight back- this is a clear sign of trouble…

  20. Idaho Librul says:

The networks are terrified of the rightwing and Christian conservatives. This has been true for a couple of decades at least.

I saw 30 minute of MSNBC today during lunch and Andrea Mitchell let some rude, McCain harpy walk all over her. It was embarrassing. I thought Andrea was tougher.

This decision is so serious that I may stop watching Keith too. Countdown is the only program that makes money for MSNBC. If we’re serious about a financial boycott, it needs to start with their moneymaker.

  21. I sent this to countdown@msnbc.com & hardball@msnbc.com ,nightly@nbc.com, phil.griffin@nbc.com, steve.capus@nbc.com, jeff.zucker@nbcuni.com and chuck.todd@nbcuni.com:

I am deeply disappointed to learn of your decision to replace Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews with someone else to cover the presidential election night in November. Both Matthews and Olbermann have displayed the utmost professionalism in a very heated and divisive election. Yes, perhaps they both have a slight leaning towards the left but they are always fair and objective in their coverage of the presidential campaigns and party conventions. Your decision was a bad one and prompts me to cease from viewing your shows. I will advise all of my responsible and fair-minded friends and family to do the same. In a time when more journalist are caving in to pressure and refusing to adhere to basic tenents of journalistic integrity, Mathews and Olberman were part of a minority that spoke truth to power. SHAME ON YOU NBC AND MSNBC FOR QUELLING THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS!

  22. Walk on Socks says:

    Thanks, TryExcellence.

An excellent letter and useful links.

Like others, I really wonder who will listen at the top of NBC? After all, NBC is owned by GE and GE’s financial dealings are so intimately interwoven with war and killing, that the voices of 1,000 whining conservatives matter more to them than 100,000 liberals outraged by this decision.

  23. Rachel says:

I may boycott all of MSNBC’s programming. The executives at NBC must understand people will not watch their network if they suck up to the radical, rightwing. You can’t have it both ways, NBC.

  24. I will tune in to CSPAN with this revelation. NBC can suck my rick. Maybe NBC does not get it but their marketshare is liberals who are sick of Faux News.

  25. wordgeezer says:

Amazing that the, oil hungry, corpo-government would push for McPain for prez, let alone Caribou Barbie for the veep. The sons of illigitamate she dogs want it all don’t they. First Amy Goodman, and now the only link with sanity on the MSM. Whats next, microwave crowd control?… G:
