Michelle Obama: “Barack Will Fight for LGBT Equality”

Friday, June 27, 2008

While Barack Obama stumbles badly on everything from telecom immunity, to the death penalty, to public financing, to Iran, and even gun control, finally there is some good news to report from Obamaland and it comes from Mrs. Obama herself, Michelle.

Appearing at Manhattan fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee’s Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council, Michelle Obama said her husband will fight for equal rights for gays just as he fought to help working-class families overcome poverty.

Recalling his past work as a community organizer to help struggling families, Michelle Obama said he would take the same approach as president.

“Barack believes that we must fight for the world as it should be, a world where together we work to reverse discriminatory laws.”

Michelle Obama also drew a connection between the struggles for gay rights and civil rights.

“We are all only here because of those who marched and bled and died, from Selma to Stonewall, in the pursuit of a more perfect union,” she said at the event, held days before the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots between gays and New York police, and the city’s annual gay pride parade.

“The world as it is should be one that rejects discrimination of all kinds,” she said.

Michelle Obama’s speech brought a standing ovation from the crowd of about 200 donors, who raised about $1.3 million.

Michelle is a strong, Black woman and she can be counted on to knock some sense into Barack when he starts flip-flopping.

Seriously, good for her and as you say, finally some good news to report about Obama.

I like Michelle Obama a lot. Probably more than I like him. She’s cool, funny, smart and girlfriend can wear some clothes! What a contrast to Pickles Bush and that damned PTA pantsuit she’s always running around in.

  3. Robert Rouse says:

Michelle will end up being the strongest and smartest First Lady we’ve had since Eleanor.

  4. Aunt Peg says:

    Brava, to Michelle Obama!

Here’s why I say this. She’s an African American woman and she made the connection between the Civil Rights movement and the Gay rights movement.

This is my idea of a wonderful First Lady. As Robert said, Michelle Obama will be as important as was Eleanor Roosevelt.

  5. Harry says:

I nominate Michelle Obama for Barack’s vice president. She would be perfect and she would keep him in line.

  6. California Dreamin' says:

Arguably the most important speech Michelle Obama has made since Barack threw his hat in the presidential race. I can’t recall another wife of a spouse reaching out to the gay community so forcefully. Good for her!

  7. Gizmo says:

A tale of two campaign spouses.

    a. Michele Obama reaches out to the gay community and ties the struggle for civil rights to gay rights. She promises inclusion for gays in her husband’s administration.

    b. Cindy McCain on the same day gave a speech supporting her husband’s call to keep “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in place.

    Nuff said.

  8. Bill Perdue, RainbowRED says:

A Republican is a baboon in a people suit with a theocrat attached at the hip. A Democrat is Republican in drag.

Opposition to same sex marriage is the hallmark of christian bigotry. Obama is a christian bigot.

Voting for any Republican or Democrat, including McCain or Obama, is a vote for war, bigotry and the rapid erosion of our standard of living and the protections of the Bill of Rights.

  9. Grant says:

Michelle Obama is alright with me and I can hardly wait to have her as the nation’s First Lady.

What a breath of fresh air!

  10. Kellybelle says:

    Yay! Michelle rocks.

  11. Travelingman says:

Cindy McOldwhiteguy is a stupid drug addict. WTF is she doing talking about policy? Go Michelle!

  12. Ypsilanti says:

While the silly media is focused on the carnival-like atmoshere surrounding Barack and Hillary’s meeting in Unity, NH today, Michelle Obama’s meeting with members of the gay community in New York City is the stuff of genuine unity.

This is type of bridge building that goes a long way to mending fences after a hard fought campaign and I for one, think Michelle mentioning the civil rights struggles was brilliant.

    I like her tremendously.

  13. Joe in Colorado says:

I think Michelle Obama is a natural and when she reaches out to a community, as she did with the gay community, people take notice and believe her. She has cred and it isn’t contrived the way it is when the Clintons try to do it.

  14. feminazi says:

How terrific for the gay community to know they have such a compassionate friend in Michelle Obama. She will a wonderful First Lady for all Americans but especially, for people who have been marginalized through out history.

  15. RainBro says:

    How very commendable.
I love Michelle O. She never pulls a punch. 😉

  16. Brigadoon says:

Fierce, honey! Michelle is on fire!

  17. Winnie H. says:

When Michelle gives these speeches, she is speaking for Barack. She is voicing his point of view and his goals for his administration. They are a team, and I’m beginning to wonder if, while he has to play nice with everybody to make sure this election goes to Democrats, she is the one to watch and listen to if you really want to know where Barack stands.

We mustn’t get too disappointed with the hoops that the current system is forcing Obama to jump through — keep an ear open and an eye on Michelle. She will be telegraphing what he really thinks and what they will stand for together when they get to the White House.

  18. Jenna Bush Stole My ID says:

    Cool Beans.

So Obama owns the middle and upper-middle class white voters, African Americans and now the LGBT voters. Plus, the Independents.

    I like it!

  19. Mauigirl says:

Glad to hear this from Michelle. Let’s hope Obama comes through when he gets in (I won’t say “if” because he MUST get in).
