NBC Buckles to Religious Right, Cancels The Book of Daniel

Just 24 hours after announcing the cancellation of the hugely successful and long running comedy, Will and Grace, NBC wiped any presence of gay Americans from the network by cancelling The Book of Daniel.

The Book of Daniel featured two of primetime’s few openly gay characters and was written by openly gay writer, Jack Kenny.

The show starred actor Aidan Quinn as the Reverend Daniel Webster — an unconventional Episcopalian minister who not only believes in Jesus – he actually sees him and discusses life with him. His TV children included Peter (Christian Campbell, “Trick”), a 23-year-old gay son, daughter, Grace (Alison Pill, “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen”), who just happens to be a drug dealer, a 16-year-old adopted son who regularly had sex with the bishop’s daughter, and Webster’s martini addicted wife.

The show was immediately targeted by the religious right and southern fundies. The American Family Association called on its members to pressure stations to drop the series and issued veiled boycott threats against advertisers.

NBC once stood for the National Broadcasting Corporation, however today, it stands for Nothing But Cowards.
