Alaska Airlines, the seventh-largest carrier in the U.S. in terms of passenger traffic, said on Wednesday that it would end a decades-old tradition of handing out prayer cards with its in-flight meals.

The prayer cards, which the Seattle-based airline began offering in the 1970s after an executive spotted them on another airline, was allegedly intended to put passengers at ease, a spokeswoman said.

In the interest of full disclosure I have to say I’ve never flown Alaska Airlines. If I had and I received a prayer card with my meal, rest assured the prayer card and the meal would’ve been returned to the flight crew with an obscenity-laced admonishment.

Here’s an interesting exchange between former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and CNN reporter John King on the possibility of a New Gingrich presidency. The exchange comes courtesy of Real Clear Politics:

John King, CNN: “Could [you] come back here next January or next February with a President Gingrich?”

Rep. Nancy Pelosi: “Let me just say this. That will never happen.”

King: “Why?”

Pelosi: “He’s not going to be President of the United States. That’s not going to happen. Let me just make my prediction and stand by it, it isn’t going to happen.”

King: “Why are you so sure?”

Pelosi: “There is something I know. The Republicans, if they choose to nominate him that’s their prerogative. I don’t even think that’s going to happen.”

Willard “Mitt” Romney is a very wealthy man. He and wife Ann are worth from $190 million to $250 million; earned $21.7 million in 2010 and paid a 13.9 percent tax rate, a rate lower than a person earning $50,000. The amount the Romneys paid in taxes in 2010 was about $3 million.

Willard’s reluctance to embrace his father’s transparency on the subject of income taxes is increasingly clear with releasing their tax returns from 2010. The Romneys’ income is mostly derived from investments, mostly in the form of capital gains which are taxed at a lower rate than other types of income.

The couple’s investments are scattered from the United States, to the Cayman Islands, Switzerland, Ireland and even Luxembourg. The Swiss bank account is now closed. In 2010, the Romneys gave nearly $3 million to charity, half of that going to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also known as the Mormon church.

Romney’s tax information which includes more than 500 pages can be found on his website.

After Mitt “Willard” Romney’s embarrassing loss to Newt Gingrich in the South Carolina primary and his one-time lead in the polls in Florida collapsing around him, Romney has gone nuclear in his attacks on Gingrich.

Romney told NBC News:

“So I’ve had the experience of leadership. Now Speaker Gingrich has also been a leader. He was a leader for four years as speaker of the House. And at the end of four years it was proven he was a failed leader. And he had to resign in disgrace. I don’t know if you knew that. He actually resigned after four years in disgrace. He was investigated under an ethics panel and had to make a payment associated with that and then his fellow Republicans, 88 percent of Republicans, voted to reprimand Speaker Gingrich. He has not had a record of successful leadership.”

This is a new side of Romney. Gone is the robotic rhetoric, encased in the perfectly coiffed, blow-dried hair. Willard is gettin’ all gangsta’ now. The Republican primary is finally becoming fun to watch.

Following Wednesday’s internet protest blackout, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced on Friday that the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) had been postponed indefinitely.

Reid said in a statement:

“There is no reason that the legitimate issues raised by many about this bill cannot be resolved. Counterfeiting cost the American economy billions of dollars and thousands of jobs each year, with the movie industry alone supporting over 2.2 million jobs. We must take action to stop these illegal practices. We live in a country where people rightfully expect to be fairly compensated for a day’s work, whether that person is a miner in the high desert of Nevada, or an independent band in New York City, or a union worker on the back lots of a California movie studio. I admire the work that Chairman Leahy has put into this bill. I encourage him to continue engaging with all stakeholders to forge a balance between protecting Americans’ intellectual property, and maintaining openness and innovation on the internet. We made good progress through the discussions we’ve held in recent days, and I am optimistic that we can reach a compromise in the coming weeks.”

Reid’s announcement comes just one day after a whip count by Open Congress revealed a mass of Senators had turned against PIPA after the Internet’s first major, coordinated blackout on Wednesday resulted in millions to contact their members of Congress to demand the bill be scrapped. It takes 41 votes to stop a bill from moving through the Senate, and so far 38 members are either confirmed “No” votes, or are leaning toward a “No” on SOPA/PIPA.

Oddly, it is Republican lawmakers who pulled their support from the bill, including one of the bill’s original sponsor Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) while Democrats held fast in their support. They include Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), who’s accepted nearly $1 million dollars from pro-SOPA/PIPA groups and Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) who’s accepted $777,383 from PIPA-supporting special interest groups.

Other spineless Democrats who continue to voice their support for SOPA and PIPA includes: Sen. Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY), Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI),  and Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO).

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz is one of the most prominent supporters of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which drew massive protests from sites like Wikipedia and Google on Wednesday. Google reported that over 4 million people signed their anti-piracy petition on Wednesday.

At last night’s presidential debate in South Carolina, the four remaining Republican candidates denounced the Protect IP Act.

It appears that for now, the internet is safe.

Serial Philanderer Newt Gingrich with Ex Wife Marianne During Happier Times

Marianne Gingrich, Newt’s wife from 1981–2000, is set to unload on her ex-husband saying her revelations are so damning they could finally end his political career.

So serious is the matter that Newt Gingrich cancelled all interviews on Wednesday to deal with the unfolding matter.

In an ABC Nightline interview set to air tonight, Marianne Gingrich says her former husband sought an “open marriage” arrangement so he could have a mistress and a wife.

According to ABC News:

ABC reporter Brian Ross interviewed Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich’s second wife, with whom he’s said he has no relationship. The segment is likely to air Thursday on “Nightline,” an ABC News executive told The Associated Press.

The ABC News executive did not indicate what the ex-wife, Marianne Gingrich, said in the interview. The executive spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plans for airing the interview were tentative.

The interview, should it air before Saturday’s primary, would shine a spotlight on a part of Gingrich’s past that could turn off Republican voters in a state filled with religious and cultural conservatives who may cringe at Gingrich’s two divorces and acknowledged infidelity.

In her most provocative comments, the ex-Mrs. Gingrich said Newt sought an “open marriage” arrangement so he could have a mistress and a wife.

Marianne Gingrich has said Gingrich proposed to her before the divorce from his first wife was final in 1981, and they were married six months later. Marianne’s marriage to Gingrich ended in divorce in 2000, and Gingrich admitted he’d already taken up with Callista Bisek, a former congressional aide who would become his third wife. The speaker who pilloried President Bill Clinton for his affair with Monica Lewinsky was himself having an affair at the time.

The old adage says water finds its own level. Nothing is more true when it comes to out-of-wedlock mother and former National Organization for Marriage chair Maggie Gallagher and Rick “Frothy” Santorum.

In an email to her supporters, Gallagher opined:

Rick Santorum is one of the original authors of the Federal Marriage Amendment and is widely known for his use of antigay rhetoric. Santorum frequently tries to equate same-sex marriage with bestiality and polygamy.

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow may be able to turn water into Gatorade but he was unable to shepherd his team to a winning victory against Tom Brady and the elite New England Patriots.

In the most highly-anticipated NFL play-off game in history, the Broncos lost to the Patriots 10-to-44. The game was essentially over by the end of the second quarter.

The Patriots will host either the Baltimore Ravens or Houston Texans next Sunday afternoon.

After captivating the nation with his stellar performance in last week’s wild-card win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow just wasn’t present tonight, completing only nine of 26 passes for 136 yards. At times, Tebow looked lost against the mighty Tom Brady.

Tom Brady dealt with Tebowmania by simply squashing it. He was, in a word, perfect. Brady threw six touchdowns passes, five in the first half — an NFL record and put the Patriots into the AFC championship game.

I think we can finally put the national nightmare of Tebowmania to rest, where it belongs.

TX Gov. Rick Perry’s disastrous political fortunes have been blamed on everything from fatigue, to back pain and even a lack of intelligence. But this story takes the campaign cake.

Fresh off a visit to a local shooting range, Rick Perry stopped by a packed Squat N’ Gobble restaurant in Bluffton, SC to emphasize his credentials as governor of Texas and as a member of the U.S. Air Force.

Perry tried to call on a mannequin wearing a Squat N’ Gobble T-shirt whose hand was raised above her head.

The new year brings a viciously homophobic edict from the pedophile priest protector himself, Pope Benedict RatNAZI.

In his annual hate speech to the Vatican diplomatic corps, the so-called papal “State of the World” address, RatNAZI doubled down on gay marriage, calling it the a threat to “the future of humanity.”

The Vatican and Catholic officials around the world have protested against moves to legalize gay marriage in Europe and other developed parts of the world.

Marriage equality is legal in a number of European countries, including Norway, Spain, Sweden, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Recently, New York state became the sixth U.S. to legalize same-sex marriage.

I found the Catholic Church’s obsession with LGBT equality more than a little ironic considering the appallingly poor job the Catholic hierarchy has done in policing and ending the global pedophile priest epidemic – not that the two are in any way related.

According to the 2004, John Jay report, a total of 10,667 allegations against 4,392 priests in the U.S. faced allegations of sexual abuse against children, mostly from  minor age boys.

Sources report Keith Olbermann has been given ”carte blanche” by Current-TV to completely plan and program the channel’s 2012 presidential election coverage.

Following Olbermann’s near-total absence from TV coverage of the GOP Iowa Caucus, rumors bubbled up that the outspoken commentator and Current-TV had lawyered up in preparation of a split but, it appears all differences have been resolved.

Current-TV is wise to not lose Olbermann’s unique media brand. He controls a large and dedicated viewer audience and having him onboard will help raise Current-TV’s rather lowly cable profile.

Keith Olbermann took to his Twitter to announce:

“I am pleased that I’ll be running the election coverage on Current, following this Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary.”

While President Obama vacationed in Hawaii over Christmas and New Years, he missed what some are calling an rip opportunity to make dozens of critical recess appointments unencumbered by the morass of the 112th “do nothing” Congress.

One such recess appointment is Richard Cordray, Obama’s nominee to head the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. But, with today technically the last day to use this authority it is highly unlikely the timid Mr. Obama would step up and act.

TPM reports:

[A] senior administration official who would not be quoted told reporters at a White House background briefing Tuesday that Obama will not take advantage of that opening.

The official declined to provide further explanation, but the decision implies one of three things: that Obama does not believe he’s encumbered by technical restrictions on his power to recess appoint nominees and can still act between now and late January when Senators return to town; that he will instead wait until a future recess when feels he has more running room and political capital to recess appoint Cordray and others; or that he has no intention of challenging Congressional Republicans by making further recess appointments between now and the end of this Congress.

Obama’s been gun-shy about recess appointments compared to his predecessors — a reluctance that frustrates his progressive critics. But he also has taken a firm stance on Cordray, and many observers believed — and continue to believe — that a recess appointment is still in the works.

In a bid to block Obama’s recess appointments, Congressional Republicans have been forcing the Senate to hold “pro forma” sessions. In these, every three days a nearby Senator heads to the Capitol, gavels into and out of session, and thus prevents a technical “recess.”

Presidents typically respect this precedent, but the Constitution doesn’t tie their hands. Moreover, today is the day that the Senate switches from the first to the second session of the 112th Congress — and Obama could have used the extremely brief window in between those sessions to make any number of appointments. Senate Republicans were well aware of this threat, and made that clear in a number of public statements.

Just before winter recess, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced, “We are ready and willing to move forward, by [unanimous] consent, with a package of nominations to positions in both the executive and judicial branches — just as soon as I receive confirmation from the administration that it will respect practice and precedent on recess appointments, we can get these people confirmed.”

If President Obama believes Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell is “ready and willing to move forward” this spring on appointments, then the president is even more naive than we’ve been led to believe.

Editor Update: Apparently, President Obama had enough of being called a pussy and a wuss in the blogosphere. He manned up and made three recess appointments, one included Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The White House announced Wednesday that Mr. Obama would also use his recess powers to fill three vacancies on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the federal agency charged with enforcing labor law.

Harry Burkhart, 24, the arson suspect in at least 55 Los Angeles county fires, is being held without bail, according to authorities. Burkhart resembled a ‘person of interest’ captured on surveillance video, and reportedly told authorities ‘I hate America’ as he was arrested.

A wrath of fires ranging from mid-Wilshire, to the Fairfax district, Hollywood, West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley, destroyed cars, scorched apartment building and houses, rattling the nerves of resident in a metro area of more than 13 million over a four-day period.

Burkhart is believed to a foreign national from Germany. It is also believed his mother faced a deportation hearing in Los Angeles County within the last two weeks. There have been no new arson fires since Burkhart’s arrest.

Mike Heath, who Chaired Americans For Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH) from 2008 – 2010, an anti-gay organization who also includes Peter LaBarbera.

AFTAH has also been home to the equally vicious J. Matt Barber.

“Mike Heath, who became Ron Paul’s Iowa state director this fall, has spent his career on the Christian right. In Iowa, Heath has focused on outreach to the religious community in the state, where Paul has made an effort to target evangelical voters.”

A bizarre aside, I learned this morning that the American Idol first season winner, singer Kelly Clarkson, has come out in support of Ron Paul. Buying her music means you’re putting money in her pocket to help her donate to Ron Paul’s campaign.

According to the latest Gallup poll, the most admired man in the U.S. is President Barack Obama and the most admired woman is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. This marks the fourth consecutive year for Mr. Obama while Ms. Clinton has been the most admired woman in each of the last 10 years. Quite an accomplishment.

While the Gallup poll certainly confirms the enduring popularity of President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton, Robert Reich, the former Clinton labor secretary is making a prediction: Get ready for Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden to swap places in 2012. Mr. Biden becomes Secretary of State, a position he’s coveted for many years and Ms. Clinton becomes Vice President.

Reich explains:

Why do I say this? Because Obama needs to stir the passions and enthusiasms of a Democratic base that’s been disillusioned with his cave-ins to regressive Republicans. Hillary Clinton on the ticket can do that.

Moreover, the economy won’t be in superb shape in the months leading up to Election Day. If the European debt crisis grows worse and if China’s economy continues to slow, there’s a better than even chance we’ll be back in a recession. Clinton would help deflect attention from the bad economy and put it on foreign policy, where she and Obama have shined. 

The deal would also make Clinton the obvious Democratic presidential candidate in 2016 — offering the Democrats a shot at twelve (or more) years in the White House, something the Republicans had with Ronald Reagan and the first George Bush but which the Democrats haven’t had since FDR. Twelve years gives the Democratic party a chance to reshape the U.S. Supreme Court as well as put an indelible stamp on America. 

Republican presidential hopeful and Libertarian darling Rep. Ron Paul is so afraid of catching ‘teh gay’ that he prefers availing himself to the unsanitary conditions of a busy fast food restaurant john than using the bathroom in a private home of a gay supporter.

Former staffer Eric Dondero describes Rep. Ron Paul’s attitudes towards the gay community.

“He is not all bigoted towards homosexuals. He supports their rights to do whatever they please in their private lives. He is however, personally uncomfortable around homosexuals, no different from a lot of older folks of his era.”

Dondero describes an incident in San Francisco back in 1988 where Ron Paul was uncomfortable using the bathroom in the home of Jim Peron, a gay supporter and the owner of Laissez Faire Books in San Francisco. Jim had set up a magnificent 3-day campaign swing for us in the SF Bay Area.

“Ron pulled me aside the first time we went there, and specifically instructed me to find an excuse to excuse him to a local fast food restaurant so that he could use the bathroom. He told me very clearly, that although he liked Jim, he did not wish to use his bathroom facilities. I chided him a bit, but he sternly reacted, as he often did to me, Eric, just do what I say.”

Rep. Ron Paul must find campaigning excruciatingly challenging finding gay-free public restrooms.

The security price tag of keeping TX Gov. Rick “I’m a Prophet” Perry safe costs the state a staggering $400,000 a month.

An close examination of Texas public safety department records found the agency forked out more than $1.4 million on out-of-state trips between September to December, including more than $397,000 between Sept. 5 and Sept. 28, 2011.

According to a report by the Texas Tribune:

· $161,786 went for airfares
· $8,140 for baggage fees
· $50,648.84 for food
· $6,442.24 for fuel
· $112,111.81 for lodging
· $54,356.65 for rentals
· $2,990.26 for parking
· $1,238.57 in an “other” unspecified costs

The Texas Tribune noted George W. Bush also amassed a hefty tab when he ran for president in 2000 while he was governor of Texas. The state spent at least $400,000 per month in the first quarter of the year when he ran for president in 2000, and Texas taxpayers paid $3.9 million for his security costs between January 1999 and March 2000 when Secret Service took over security detail.

Pakistan received an early Christmas gift from President Barack Obama with the announcement the U.S. will suspend CIA drone attacks on low-ranking militants believed to be involved in on U.S. troops and facilities in Afghanistan.

The undeclared halt in CIA attacks, now in its sixth week, is seen as an effort to stop the worsening relationship between the U.S. and Pakistan. Drone attacks on ordered by President Obama have gone awry in recent months, resulting in a series of deadly incidents, including the mistaken attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last month.

The New America Foundation, a think tank in Washington, estimates CIA drones have killed at least 1,717 people, including 1,424 militants but other estimates run considerably higher.

This means hundreds of innocent Pakistanis have been killed by U.S. drones.

A November 26th drone which killed the 24 Pakistani soldiers, caused a near rupture in relations between the U.S. and Pakistan. After the raid, Islamabad ordered the United States to vacate the Shamsi Airbase in southwest Pakistan, which the CIA had used to stage lethal drone flights.

Three U.S. citizens were killed when gunmen attacked buses in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz, said a U.S. State Department official said on Saturday.

The three were traveling for the Christmas holidays when they and a number of other passengers on the bus were killed by gunmen.

The incident was one of several that day in which gunmen attacked buses in Veracruz, a major oil export hub that has become a target for drug gang violence.

Veracruz has become a flashpoint for drug cartel violence between the Zetas gang and Gulf drug cartels.

In response, the Mexican military has taken over control of the Veracruz police although, it remains to be seen what impact this action will have on the violence.

More than 45,000 people have been killed in cartel-related violence since President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006.
