Cher Says “Nyet” to Open 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia

The Patron Saint of the LGBT community, Cher, turned down an offer to open the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

In an interview with Canadian magazine Maclean’s, Cher revealed that she recently turned down an offer to perform at the Sochi Olympic Games in protest to the government’s treatment of the LGBT community:

“I can’t name names,” but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show. I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there. He said the Russian people don’t feel the way the government does.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently signed into law a bill banning the “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations,” thus opening a dark and violent Hitlerian chapter in the modern history of gay rights in Russia. The law caps an epoch of activities by the Russian government aimed at limiting the rights of the country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people.

  1. Brigadoon says:

Cher’s ‘gay cred’ is written in the stars.

  2. Peace Nick says:

Cher is beautiful inside and outside. Her support for the gay community never wavered. Even when her career was stalled, she was loyal and reliable.

    There’s a reason she’s a legend.

  3. Mets Fan says:

Brava, Cher! And fuck Russia, Putin and all the Ruskie bigots.

  4. Rachel says:

Always loved Cher. Grew up with her. Not literally but her presence, music, TV show and movies. To be so beautiful at 67. Keep it going, Mama!

  5. ChiTOM says:

Cher has always been a fearless bitch. Do you read her twitter? She’s a riot. She blasts Mitt Romney and Rick Perry with unfiltered passion and nerve. While everyone else accords them respect, Cher kicks their asses. She’s one in a million.

  6. feminazi says:

I agree with Peace Nick. Cher is beautiful inside and out. I also have to believe growing up in show business and having a transgender son has made her keenly aware of discrimination. She’s a good egg and great advocate for gay rights.

  7. Jim says:

A class act as usual. Can’t wait for her new cd!!!!!

  8. Christopher says:

I read the Russian Duma is so freaked out that public school books teach that Tchaikovsky was gay that they’re in the process of reediting all public to remove this fact.

In 21st century Russia, gay people aren’t 2nd or 3rd class citizens, oh no. They don’t exist.

Personally, I will never forgive the IOC for awarding the 2014 Winter Olympics to this Naziesque nation.

  9. Randy Arroyo says:

This is patently ridiculous. I would think a major nation of 100 million people have more important things to do than “de-gay’ the country. I read today Elton John just can’t resist a big pay day to perform in Russia. He’s truly pond scum and no longer human. I hope Cher calls him and goes on blast. She can be fierce.

  10. Harry says:

Randy – Elton John is performing in Russia? You’re joking?

  11. Scott Dancer says:

I am not surprised Cher turned Russia down. She doesn’t need or want the controversy that would accompany an appearance at the 2014 Sochi games. Plus, her status as a “gay icon” would suffer.

However, I am surprised Elton John is going over. I mean, Elton John? Has the Russian authorities given him a visa yet to enter the country? What happens if they refuse to issue his visa?

I think Elton John needs to rethink this stupid decision.
